Dorchester-born actor Mark Walhberg is asking the state to wipe a 25-year-old assault case from his record.

Wahlberg was sentenced in 1988 and served three months in jail, according to his petition, filed with the state on Nov. 26. The Hollywood star says his “past convictions still legally impact me to this day,” but notes he has spoken openly about his troubled youth.

“The more complex answer is that receiving a pardon would be a formal recognition that I am not the same person that I was on the night of April 8, 1988,” Wahlberg wrote. “My hope is that, if I receive a pardon, troubled youths will see this as an inspiration and motivation that they too can turn their lives around and be formally accepted back into society.

“It would also be an important capstone to the lessons that I try to teach my own children on a daily basis,” he added.

Wahlberg, whose list of Hollywood titles includes, “Ted,” “The Fighter” and “The Departed,” joins a growing list of those hoping to wipe the slate clean. The state’s advisory board of pardons is still sorting through more than 250 petitions for commutations, or requests to shorten a jail sentence, and more than 70 pardons, according to the office.

Gov. Deval Patrick has already recommended four people for pardon and one commutation in recent months, his first during his two terms.

The board has not yet voted on whether to recommend Wahlberg for a pardon.
