Uhhh, he gon get his ass kicked

The UFC has signed former WWE professional wrestler CM Punk to fight in the Octagon.

The promotion announced the signing during its UFC 181 pay-per-view broadcast Saturday night. CM Punk, birth name Phil Brooks, never has fought professional mixed martial arts.

"This is my new career, 100-percent," CM Punk said in a statement. "I'm going to go full steam ahead, all systems go after today, and it's going to be fun."

UFC president Dana White said CM Punk intends to fight at middleweight (185 pounds), but said he'd be open to 170 pounds.

The UFC took to Twitter to announce that CM Punk is expected to make his Octagon debut in 2015. "He wanted to fight here," White told ESPN.com. "He wanted to give it a shot, so we gave him an opportunity. It's not like Brock Lesnar. We're not going to throw the kitchen sink at him. Lesnar had a wrestling background. (CM Punk) going to fight a guy who is 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 -- something like that."

White did not have a firm 2015 date for CM Punk's debut, saying it could take some time, perhaps six to seven months. The UFC head noted that Brooks has been training jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts for an extended period of time.

"He's been coming to fights for a long time and after his WWE contract was up, he called me and said he wanted to give it a shot. I said, 'All right. We'll give you a shot.' "

At 36, CM Punk acknowledges that time is not on his side.

"My professional wrestling days are over, it's awesome to be here," he said. "This is something I've wanted to do for a long time.

"I felt like it was now or never. I have a limited window most fighters don't have. I'm either here to win or get my ass kicked."
12668805, well with his status he'll probably have no trouble finding a good camp
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Sun Dec-07-14 12:01 AM
and they are gonna give him someone relatively easy. wouldnt be surprised if they give him a complete can
12668826, He's been training with Rener Gracie for a grip.

12669194, Punk's run won't be like Brock's at all
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Dec-08-14 10:02 AM
his first fight will be against somebody with MAYBE 1 professional fight in...

He might fight the Green Ranger...LMAO...UFC better be care with that...
12669703, Oh, I don't doubt that.
Posted by magilla vanilla, Mon Dec-08-14 04:26 PM
Brock was one of the very best olympic wrestlers in the world heading in- he STARTED as a potential MMA star.

I only brought Rener up to further support that Punk has the connects to get into a good camp.
12669723, I wasn't the biggest Brock Lesnar fan
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Dec-08-14 04:42 PM
while he was in the UFC, but his run is pretty remarkable given how limited his striking skills were. That second match with Frank Mir when he made dude's face look like a pumpkin is still pretty remarkable to me. I wish he would have come up slower and got into a better striking camp to round out his skills more.
12668833, Takes a lot of courage for him to make that jump.

12669200, Heard his first fight is the Green Ranger, Tommy? n/m

12669228, lol that's such a CM Punk way to begin. I hope Tommy gets fucked up lol

I hope his first fight isn't really with the Green Ranger. Then the UFC will be officially one step above the WWE. And now, I really appreciate the UFC.
12669728, I don't think Dana will go that route
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Dec-08-14 04:46 PM
For one, that fight would look like a freak show given the fact dude is known mainly as The Green Ranger and after that Randy Couture/James Toney debacle, I think Dana wants to avoid any oddball looking fights. Secondly, Dana mentioned CM Punk is going to fight someone of comparable MMA skills, The Green Ranger dude is a legit karate black belt and already has some MMA victories in him cap. He would be favored against Punk, and I don't think Dana would do him like that.
12669397, Dang haters, let the man work his way into the system.
Posted by Case_One, Mon Dec-08-14 12:08 PM
Punk is an athlete, who knows if he will be able to make the conversion to the UFC and in a few years work himself into a real champion like contender.

I hate when folks try to limit and box people into a corner just because of there own limited vision and resolve.

Preach, Preacha! (Said in Kirk Franklin's voice)

I am excited about him being in UFC. I just want him to come correct and have a real opponent. I'm sorry, the Green Ranger doesn't count as a real opponent. If he wanted some of CM Punk, he should have joined the WWE. But I believe Punk can make the transition.
12669449, I Think Punk has a legit shot if he's trained by a good camp
Posted by Case_One, Mon Dec-08-14 12:52 PM
Yeah, dude is quick, knowledgable and he's got heart.

12669523, who's hating? lol
Posted by MiracleRic, Mon Dec-08-14 01:57 PM
laughing aint hating

dude seems to be clawing desperately for any type of relevance...

it could be more than that...it's a lot of athletes out here that fail...but yea...any 36 year old "athlete" that is still trying to cling to Al Bundy dreams for a check is gonna be hard to take seriously...

i mean...they talking about a nigga named CM Punk fighting the fucking Green Ranger!

they boxed themselves in for profit...can't really be mad for people buying what you selling
12669536, RE: who's hating? lol

>laughing aint hating
>
>dude seems to be clawing desperately for any type of
>relevance...**I don't see that. Where do you see that? He had GREAT relevance in WWE. He pimped Vince's system... got his salary and now wants to try something new Ala Brock and Bobby Lashley.
>

But there have been successful transitions... so why are you laughing? But really based on the fact that you don't really follow CM Punk, you don't know the significance of the move. **edit** so with all love fam-o... it sounds like you are the one hating. In answer to your question.
12669542, oh, so u know my athletic history? oh ok
Posted by MiracleRic, Mon Dec-08-14 02:17 PM
moving from high school/collegiate wrestling to no athletics/reality show to WWE to UFC is not a smooth transition fam

i transitioned from football to basketball and it took years for me to be anywhere near collegiate level...

going from wrestling to mixed martial arts is actually a good one if he weren't 36 years old and many years removed from real wrestling...

so no i'm not hating...i'd have the same reaction if lavar arrington announced he was about to play rugby lmao
12669548, nope... I know you are mistaken about CM Punk

12669555, in what way?
Posted by MiracleRic, Mon Dec-08-14 02:29 PM
he aint wrestle competitively since like 2005...

and he's 36

the biggest transition for wrestlers is getting used to strikers...

they already talking about matching him up against other non-prospects...how is my projection of his UFC career off if even they aren't expecting much?

36 year old wrestlers can do it especially ones in as good as shape as him but i doubt any one expects him to have enough time to train well enough to make any real "transition"

36 year olds being punched repeatedly is rarely ever a good look if they aint used to that shit
12669700, I mean, you said he's desperate for relevance.
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Dec-08-14 04:25 PM
He's writing for Marvel comics. He hasn't been gone from the wwe for a full year and interest in anything he does is huge. He did a podcast that basically broke the website....twice. people who are clawing desperately for relevance don't generate that level of interest.

He's a millionaire who left on his own terms and got everything he wanted from the wwe after he left. His wife is arguably the most prominently featured female wrestler in the last three years. He's been training with Rener Gracie for years now in BJJ, so it's not as though he's a blank slate or lacking in pedigree in that department.

He's a guy who has the freedom to do exactly what he wants, when he wants, and on his own terms. He's pretty much the opposite of desperate and his relevance is actually why the UFC signing is big news.

As far as not wrestling competitively since2005, I'm not sure what you mean. He doesn't have a high school/college background in "real" wrestling at all and wrestled a LOT for WWE for about a decade until January of last year and was pretty much this generatiosn Shawn Michaels/Bret Hart/Randy Savage.

The green ranger is definitely gasping for air though.
12669732, Man stop making sense. Punk is a relevant Star who creates his one shine

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
12669635, Punk will be fine...he's already UFC's biggest star...
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Dec-08-14 03:27 PM
and hasn't had a fight yet...

Fighting the green ranger wouldn't be a good look at all...

12669717, that isn't true at all.
Posted by MrThomas43423, Mon Dec-08-14 04:36 PM
UFC fans aren't as gullible as that. technical skill is valued, and until you prove that you're still just a fighter. he'll have some added popularity, but the most popular....nah.
---------------------------------------
it's true what they say...people are strange, when you're strangers.

not compassionate....only polite.

I am not like you at all and i cannot pretend.
12669787, First PPV Punk is on will have more buys than any other card that year...
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Dec-08-14 06:04 PM
I'm a UFC fan. Also a WWE fan. They are gonna have more eyes on the product because Punk is there.

Punk at one point was the biggest star on the highest weekly TV show on Cable.

Punk is going to earn his stripes so that's not a concern.
12669673, seriously the green power ranger isnt a complete can
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Mon Dec-08-14 03:59 PM
hes got some experience and wins

this could end badly for cm punk lol

unless of course dana white pays the power ranger for...assistance
12669710, Yeah I think that's probably something people are under estimating
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Dec-08-14 04:30 PM
12669792, fighting the green ranger is a publicity stunt...Dana won't sign off on it
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Dec-08-14 06:09 PM
12669825, just like dana white would never have female fighters!
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Mon Dec-08-14 07:25 PM
haha you gotta hand it to them they can spin it with the best
12669711, How injury riddled is this dude?
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Dec-08-14 04:30 PM
Fighting MMA is dangerous enough on it's own, but a good majority of injuries MMA fighters suffer occur through training. How many injuries has this guy suffered over his WWE career? I'm also curious how good his stand-up skills are. It's nice he's been rolling with the Gracies over the years, but ju-jitsu sparing and MMA fights are two completely different animals, muchless stepping up to the major leagues of the UFC.

**edit**

And while I'm not his biggest fan, it's too bad Chael Sonnen isn't on the roster anymore. The trash talking between these two would have been stellar, assuming they don't train together. Chael would run circles around Punk skill-wise, but the back and forth would have been great.
12669802, wrestlers collect concussions like NFL guys do
Posted by Virgenes Corazon, Mon Dec-08-14 06:45 PM
CM Punk caught one at the Royal Rumble and that was far from his first. Seven years of WWE, 300 days a year on the road. Plus all the years Punk put in wrestling pre-WWE.

No kidding. Punk is a few stiff shots from Mick Foley can't-remember-exactly-how-to-get-home status.
