i need to go at this point.

i intend for my son to be introduced to 'the struggle' as early as i was
(about age 5)
so if he were to ask at that age and there were something similar going on i'd
give it to him plain but simple
we're trying to make the world a better place
we hope that not spending money on non-needs at this time will help us make the world better
edited to add: and answer any questions he has from there.
i'd also go into explaining that a lot of kids in the world don't get any toys
whether its christmas or not and he should be grateful for what he already has and not
to be so upset that he's not getting anything for xmas.
