I would say a couple things....
There needs to be a list of things that people should do instead of giving. If we are asking people not to do something, like buy gifts, there has to be something to replace it... like make a youtube video of your family without gifts on Christmas day doing some prescribed thing.... or something more compelling.
That's why that ice bucket challenge enthralled so many people, beside showing off. It gave them something to do beside just sending in an envelope or plugging their credit card in a website.
