their car with them, but they are not "legally" allowed to look at anything other than the proof of insurance. That doesn't mean they won't, but they are not legally allowed to look.
As I said before, every time I can remember being pulling over the cop takes my licence, insurance, and registration (if requested) and walks back to their car. That is why I have never been keen on digital insurance cards. I don't want them taking my phone from my possession for any reason.
