Every politician with any significant following has crazy followers. And all politicians, and particularly Donald Trump, traffic in apocalyptic rhetoric. Jokes like this trigger crazy people to do crazy things, and it's in the job description of a politician to know better.
Hillary accidentally made a suggestion like this about Obama in '08 and people still rake her over the coals for it, and rightly so.
