These elections are a game of strategy as much as anything else. A chess match. She pulled the ultra-progressive card to take care of Bernie and now she's moving a bit toward the middle to cater to the on-the-fence conservatives who aren't as extreme (read: racist/bigoted) as Trump and may see a Clinton/Kaine ticket as more balanced and more inline with their moderate, or even center-right views.

I don't even support Hillary like that but from a macro perspective this is absolutely the right choice on the Clinton camp's part. Going with an ultra-Liberal running mate would've potentially alienated the highly sought after "undecided" camp in the general.
