that's a way to view them. They can be used to represent one's self to a degree but to say that is their explicit purpose would be incorrect.

Both are tools and both serve a function and purpose and said function or purpose is determined by the owner/user.

Not really. An avatar can represent whatever the user wishes it to. Same for the emoji. It's completely up to the user what it represents.
