86448, American Horror Story: Freak Show Posted by bwood, Wed Sep-10-14 02:42 PM
Here we go y'all!!!
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/tvnews.php?id=116375
It was announced last week that FX's hit series "American Horror Story" would be adopting a carnival aesthetic for its upcoming fourth season, leading some to speculate that the season may be set around a "freak show," a la Todd Browning's 1932 horror classic, Freaks. Today, series creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that the plan is to do just that, posting the following on Twitter:
Previous reports suggest that "American Horror Story: Freak Show" will be set in the 1950s with Jessica Lange already confirmed to be returning (and said to have been practicing her German accent).
The series' third season, "Coven," featured an ensemble cast that also includes Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe, Denis O’Hare, Patti LuPone, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Lily Rabe and Emma Roberts.

86449, Didn't LOVE Coven, but I'm still 100% in for this Posted by Marauder21, Mon Mar-24-14 01:15 PM
Hope they give Lange some complete insanity to go out on for her final season.

86450, Coven was my least favorite season, it wasnt horrible but Posted by Scarface_7, Tue Mar-25-14 08:51 AM
I'm kinda MEH now on the series. Personally dont really like the carnie vibe and I feel like its been in so much recently (e.g. last season of heroes all about a carnival). PENNY DREADFUL by showtime has my interest, though.

86451, He's had a big thing for "Freaks" for a while now. Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Mar-24-14 02:02 PM
There were definitely direct homages to it in Asylum.
Should get pretty cray.

murderous junkie bisexual prostitute with an over the top Irish accent who will have a scene where she has to deliver a baby in the middle of a monkey cage.

i came in when it got good for me the previous seasons the show took itself too seriously and i'm not a person that feels the need to be horrified life is real and horrifying enough ~~~~ When you are born, you cry, and the world rejoices. 86465, I'm all in on this show every season. Posted by wallysmith, Tue Mar-25-14 10:42 AM
I don't care if it's about grandma's house or mermaids or whatever, I'm tuning in.
Hopefully Murphy stays invested and doesn't get sloppy... the anthology structure should keep the characters and setting fresh at least.
Admittedly, Coven lost some momentum towards the end of the season but overall it was still a lot of fun.
But I love love love how the show both pokes fun and reveres all the classic horror tropes, while turning others on their heads. I love horror in all its forms but it can all too easily become trite and derivative, even in some of my favorite flicks. AHS doesn't just try to follow in the horror genre's footsteps; it's trying to carve its own way and I think AHS is killing it.

86466, "Freak Show" details *swipe* Posted by bwood, Tue Mar-25-14 11:16 AM
http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/03/24/american-horror-story-freak-show-details/
Fans have been hoping that the new season of American Horror Story would be set at a carnival, and they’re not soooo far off. Co-creator Ryan Murphy announced via his Twitter account that season 4 will be called Freak Show. But what does that mean exactly? EW has uncovered exclusive new details about the secretive season.
Set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1950, Freak Show finds Jessica Lange playing a German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S. Her group of “unusuals”? Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy all play performers whom Lange’s character has rescued; Denis O’Hare and Emma Roberts are also in talks to return. Freak Show’s 13 episodes will track this group as they do anything to keep their business around.
|
86467, Love it. Posted by wallysmith, Tue Mar-25-14 11:27 AM
Maybe this time more of the cast can jump in on the serial killer theme, instead of one or two characters.
|
86468, This sounds fantastic. Posted by phenompyrus, Tue Mar-25-14 12:24 PM
I remember a few years ago, a friend of mine and I were not well, and talking about how awesome it would be to go to a modern day freak show. And I'm a big fan of Freaks on top of that, so I'd be all in for this.

and CAN WE PLEASE break it into ep 1-5, 6-10 and 11-13
those 400+ reply threads get very tiresome to navigate through and i feel opens up the space for silly back and forths
just my six cents

But some ppl chose to not follow it. I don't think we should because not everyone is going to follow those rules anyway...and we like to refer back to earlier episodes.

basically. it was organized very well and wasn't nearly as unwieldy as a lot of posts that go north of 100+ replies....

They say this is gonna be more in line with Season 1. Less camp, more creepy and unsettling. And that makes me VERY happy.
|
86476, Love these tease of teasers. Posted by wallysmith, Wed Aug-20-14 06:50 PM
And their next episode previews too.
One thing that they understand so well is generating interest without spoiling anything. Shoutout to the production team for the great work.
I'm about halfway through the first season of Carnivale too. Interesting show, quirkier and less dark than what I was expecting. I'm looking forward to seeing how different carny life is depicted between the two shows.

Chiklis literally looks EXACTLY like every stereotypical strong man you've ever seen. Like... insanely identical. Bafflingly identical. Inspired casting.

I'm a Stan for TWD too, but this one might just be at the top this year.

86480, Why is this show so popular on PTP? Posted by mashpg89, Thu Sep-11-14 07:36 AM
I watched all of Coven, and it was entertaining in a really cheesy, pandering kind of way, but it nowhere near deserves the hype it gets on this forum.
Why does a topic about this show get 400+ posts while quality shows like Justified, The Leftovers, Masters of Sex, Treme, Fargo, and The Americans, to name a few, get far less posts? If you look at it by posts, it would seem that PTP's favorite shows are True Detective and American Horror Story, two shows which couldn't be farther apart in terms of quality and style.
Thoughts?
|
86481, We like The Leftovers too Posted by SammyJankis, Thu Sep-11-14 07:58 AM
|
86482, oh I know, but I'm talking about posts Posted by mashpg89, Thu Sep-11-14 08:21 AM
True Detective: 706 Mad Men: 605 AHS Coven: 568 The Leftovers: 209 Fargo: 197 Justified (S5): 157 The Americans (S2): 80 :( Masters of Sex (S1): 5 (S2): 15 so far Treme (S4): 19
Now I see the appeal of AHS, but personally I'd put all those shows far above it. Yet AHS gets an insane number of posts. It's a top 3 show for PTP in the past couple of years, which is really surprising to me because far better shows go underappreciated on here. Does it just lead to more discussion? Trolling? Or are there simply more people watching AHS?
|
86483, It's a great genre show with a great cast that is written very well. Posted by phenompyrus, Thu Sep-11-14 08:10 AM
I mean, Emmy nominated horror with Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, et al? And it has extremely consistent writing.
|
86484, While there's room to debate the quality of the writing... Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Sep-11-14 11:43 AM
... one really can't debate that it delivers perfectly to its audience and the cast is always immaculate.
Furthermore, as I've learned the hard way in the past (such as when I referred to last season as camp and got attacked), AHS has pretty much the most passionate fans on earth. There's no reason to come into a post like this when the passion is apparent and ask why fans like something "shitty." It's not a genuine question.
It's either going to be something people really dig or something they really don't. That's a product of how highly stylized the show is. Not a great deal of in-between opinion.
|
86485, First, If you believe that, why are you in this thread... Posted by StephBMore, Thu Sep-11-14 08:43 AM
secondly, it moreseo speaks to the viewers of the show, not the quality of the show (although I disagree with you, I Think the show is great).
If you look at the variety of people posting in these different threads, in AHS, it's usually the same 25-30 ppl and we are active posters...whereas in True Detective it was 100 ppl posting. We actively engage each other in this thread and that's the difference between THIS thread and other shows.

86486, I'm a covert agent tasked with infiltrating Pass The Popcorn to cause a rift Posted by mashpg89, Thu Sep-11-14 09:10 AM
Throughout the years my secret organization has noticed a growing discourse on American Horror Story in the Pass The Popcorn section of the Okayplayer forums. We became concerned that these intellectual debates over fatal vaginas, reassembled Herculean zombies, morbidly obese voodoo masochists, and obligatory resurrections of every dead character were too sophisticated and would eventually lead to societal cooperation and mass spiritual enlightenment. My goal is to create a shred of doubt in the minds of readers that this is actually a campy and horribly written show saved by a strong cast, thereby disassembling the provocative discussions and protecting our NWO & Illuminati.
Or I don't know...maybe I'm just a guy on the internet who feels free to voice his opinion.
I'll still watch the next season. The trailer looks dope and I like the carnival theme (won't be better than Carnivale though). But I've obviously struck a chord if I got aliases coming at me, so I'll let y'all get back to it.
|
86487, I ain't reading all that...and I'm not an alias. Posted by StephBMore, Thu Sep-11-14 09:40 AM
I shut down my old account and made a new one. My original one was lovelyone80 so I'm KNOWN in these threads, my other account is above. LOL.I actually made this account for the sole purpose of this show's thread.
But you can't compare the threads...if you think the show isn't good, then don't watch. if you think other show threads deserve more shine go to that thread and try to engage the posters there...and you will see that community is different that this one...True Detective had a lot of engagement but other than that, ppl just aren't as interested in their fav shows as we are in ours.
|
86488, The camp was intentional.... Posted by wallysmith, Thu Sep-11-14 11:25 AM
and Season 3 is by far the campiest of all the seasons. Also, basing the entirety of your opinion on just the third season seems incomplete.
Season 1 had more traditional horror tropes, while Season 2 stretched the boundaries of the crazy shit they could fit in. All three have fairly distinct themes, and that's a big draw of the show. Season 2 was incredibly dark and bizarre, so the relative lightheartedness of Season 3 was a refreshing change of pace.

then blah blah why not watch better shows etc etc hummnah hummnah
but hey if they were as popular there really isnt an argument here ~~~~ When you are born, you cry, and the world rejoices. Live so that when you die, you rejoice, and the world cries. ~~~~ You cannot hate people for their own good.
|
86492, The reality is that horror on TV is not plentiful. Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Sep-11-14 01:37 PM
So if Murphy wants to camp it up, it's not like horror fans have a myriad of options to race off to.
Furthermore, I find that camp is not only useful to break up what may otherwise be unrelentingly grim hours of television, but... it's Murphy's personality. Shining through. It's one of the few TV shows on any network that consistently feels EXACTLY like the author's voice, every line, every episode. I feel like that's a commodity, and cutting back on Murphy's tendency toward camp would likely cut back on the very thing that makes it such an auteur-esque standout.
|
86493, yay! Posted by lfresh, Thu Sep-11-14 02:46 PM

86497, Just finished the first season and S2E1 of Carnivale... Posted by wallysmith, Wed Oct-01-14 02:21 PM
... interesting show, but I think I'm more interested in the "realistic" carny life than I am the supernatural elements. Doesn't help that Nick Stahl's character isn't very likeable, although I do like him as an actor. Not sure yet how I feel about the show, but with only two seasons I want to finish it before AHS starts.
Gonna be interesting to see the parallels between the two shows; regardless of the tone, the carnival setting is fun and pretty novel.

86499, fun first ep... scary moments as well as a few of the campy lines from last year Posted by rjc27, Thu Oct-09-14 08:44 AM
Specifically Kathy Bates snapping at Paulsen and Paulsen calling herself a slut, which made me crack up, and of course Conroy telling Lange how awful her singing was

86501, Best first episode of AHS ever. Posted by StephBMore, Thu Oct-09-14 08:49 AM
I appreciate that this is a shift from the typical horror story...and I love they have elements of the supernatural intertwined.
And the shout out to the Asylum season? LOVED
Okay...Elsa is fabulous. Love love her and her singing life on Mars. Yes...
Bette and Dot...I figured that Bette (is she the talkative one) was the killer...I can see both of them falling for lobster boy...and I found it odd that Elsa says we dont' do prostitution but isn't the lobster boy smutting out his hands.
The Freak Show porn was disturbing. The clown is BEYOND disturbing. Everyone was dying...so much blood and gore.
But yeah...this season looks like it will push the limits. I'm here for it.

Did the girl think that her boyfriend (who couldn't wait to get into her pants) planned on pausing before sex to hire a clown to wander out of the woods and perform for her? And that the clown he chose to hire for this completely unbelievable idea would be a very obvious murder clown with blood around his mask?

86517, Probably the best premiere they've done yet. Posted by rhymesandammo, Thu Oct-09-14 08:26 PM
I was hesitant going in, not because of the subject matter (Browning's Freaks is actually my favorite movie ever) but because I heard Murphy was directing and he hasn't done that in a while. Visually, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is who really brings the best out of this show, so not seeing him credited had me worried. That said, Murphy & co. knocked this shit right out of the park. Maybe it was the 90 minute runtime (which the network has allowed for next week as well because Ryan Murphy does whatever the fuck he wants) or maybe Murph Dawg's been taking notes on the fan complaints over the years, but this was paced much slower compared to prior premiere episodes and it benefitted greatly from the containment. Instead of throwing everything but the kitchen sink at us, he focused on a few major characters and developing a coherent set-up. We haven't even met Angela Bassett, Michael Chiklis, Emma Roberts or Dennis O'Hare's characters yet and they are all supposed to play a major role.
I'm torn between what my personal highlight was because as technically astounding and perfectly acted Sarah Paulson's character(s) is/are, I don't think a villain has genuinely creeped me out and stayed in my mind like John Carroll Lynch's Twisty The Clown. This character has the biggest air of mystery around him at the moment: what's his backstory? what's behind the mask? what are his motivations for killing? I'm intrigued, and also kinda scared to find out. Part of why I love this show so much is how it always keeps you guessing, and they definitely opened up with a ton of questions. Did anybody notice how Twisty did not blink once? That scared the crap out of me.
Tonally, this thing is super dark. Like, Asylum dark. Stylistically? It's very lush and colorful, lots of pastels and great period imagery and set-pieces. Maybe Murphy works best when he's doing period stuff and can avoid awkward bits of dialouge like Lange's Twitter reference from last season or Emma Roberts' Eminem reference. Kathy Bates' character isn't as immediately striking as Delphine from last season, but given that this season seems to have a slower and more deliberate pace to it, I'm not willing to immediately write her off as a disappointment, especially since her main antagonist (Chiklis) haven't even arrived yet. I wonder if there will be any other references/through-lines to Asylum in here. Was cool seeing Pepper return.
We're in for a few musical numbers this season, it seems. Lange's "Life On Mars" cover didn't take me out of it, but it was kinda painful to listen to and I loved "The Name Game" and Stevie Nicks stuff last season, albeit however cheesy it was. Maybe that was the point, because Conroy roasted her afterwards. Not sure what Lange's characters real motivations are at the moment, but she's delivering another great performance thus far. The preview for next week shows Paulson (bae) doing a cover of "Criminal" by Fiona Apple and Conroy buying Twisty The Clown for her son. Really excited to see where all this shit goes. Hats off to Murph Dawg and the whole crew. Next week, Gomez-Rejon is up at bat. *evil grin*
|
86518, very nice points / breakdown Posted by astralblak, Wed Oct-15-14 07:57 PM
i think Lange's motivations are pretty obvious though. She is a "freak", who is also not talented, but wanted to be a star her whole life and can't let go. she uses the freak show as a vehicle to put the limelight on her, but even still people can see she does not have talent, which why "Life On Mars" came off painful (and cool)
|

I don't care if 50 of the nation's top linguists come to my living room and personally explain that it is historically and linguistically perfectly accurate to 19-whenever Baltimore (apparently what she's going for).
That is the worst fucking accent I have ever heard in my life.
It's incomprehensible that she made it past her first line-read without someone lifting the needle off the record and putting a stop to it. It sounds like 5 different bad accents all happening at once.
Still a hugely enjoyable show. I'm not petty enough that this ruins it in any way. It just sounds just so fucking bonkers to me.
|
86521, so its a baltimore accent?? Posted by lfresh, Fri Oct-10-14 09:49 AM

86525, She actually "researched" that accent too... Posted by StephBMore, Fri Oct-10-14 11:41 AM
and IDK...I remember someone saying a Baltimore accent was a poor man's version (or a muddled version) of an English accent. a bastardized English accent with an american tone.
I know how ppl sound today (black and white) with a baltimore accent, and no. There were some words she said that fit, now that I know that's the accent she was going for...but overall it wasn't great.
|
86526, I'm wondering if the inconsistent sound of it is the point. Posted by wallysmith, Sat Oct-11-14 11:29 AM
When she was introducing the various attractions of the freak show, she seemed disinterested, like she was doing more cuz she had to. It's obvious she doesn't have the heart or flair of being a barker so she's just kinda going through the motions (like I imagine how she's portraying that accent).
She's maybe a perfect contrast with Lila from Carnivale, who oozes sexiness and charm and grace.... who just so happens to also have a beard.

86533, I... liked the premiere I guess, didn't love it Posted by wallysmith, Sat Oct-11-14 11:43 AM
It seemed disjointed to me and I wasn't entirely sure what they were doing with certain scenes. That whole peppermint-girl-turned-whore thing seemed thematically inconsistent with how Elsa treats the rest of her crew. Did she really just recruit that chick to be a sort of drugged up sex slave for her 'monsters'? Filming then showing her that weird carnie porn was especially sadistic towards this girl who initially seemed like a kindred spirit to Elsa. Knowing this show, early impressions will always change but it was a bit offputting.
Dunno... I haven't been as hyped for this upcoming season as I have been with the other three premieres. Maybe because there wasn't much of a plot thus far, just introducing the characters. Although after seeing the previews it looks like the story will be coming together, so looking forward to that. I also wonder if watching Carnivale right before this is coloring my perception of Freak Show.
|
86534, I'll give it a few more eps, hopefully the new characters are better Posted by Grand_Royal, Sat Oct-11-14 05:20 PM
Lange' s character reminds of her character in the first season; an older desperate woman trying to hold on to youth/fame.
I do like Paulson as the twins, but I can see that getting old.

86547, Cool episode... Posted by StephBMore, Fri Oct-17-14 12:02 PM
I would say we "finally" get to see Twisty's face but it's only episode two so I can't act like it was a long wait but man that reveal! everyone was like OMG.
I love how ppl keep seeing Twisty around, walking around, chilling and they TRY to engage him in conversation like there's nothing wrong with him...like he doesn't look fucked up. How she got him home to play with her son (who is giving me American Psycho crazy) baffles me? And he didn't kill the son? lmao. so obviously he becomes the clown's *apprentice* or helper...a fact we kinda already knew.
I got Bette killing Dot. In some type of homicidal suicidal rage...because she's obviously jealous of Dot...and Elsa knows it and how the hell can you try to get one half of the conjoined twins on your side? like how are y'all being sneaky with another head RIGHT THERE? and I thought they could hear each other's thoughts...it must be a turn on turn off thing...
Anyway. RIP MEEP.

they're kinda making me suspend my belief with twisty. nothing seems normal / not creepy about him, yet people engage him. why didn't he kill the mom or the son... for the son I assume he saw another psychopath and kept it moving
Angela Basset is finer than a mutherfucker and the way she delivered the i'm a full blown hermaphrodite line, shiieeeet
cold what happened to the little dude in jail
yet I'm still not as invested as I was for the previous three seasons. something about the freak show just seems a bit off
|
86550, episode one was good, not great Posted by astralblak, Wed Oct-15-14 08:04 PM
Lange's dramatics is honestly starting to wear thin a bit for me, and it sucks because KB is kinda stuck with a no thrills bearded women with a strange accent character. thought their scene at the end had great nuance. Hopefully Bassett can rear her in
Twisty is GREAT
As is Paulson's Two-Head
the fish hands finger bang was strange and awesome, but the opium orgy seemed a bit in poor taste. I'm still on the fence about how AHS portrays rap
anyway I'm def still in, as season 2 was one of the best things TV ever made and last season was @@@@

86551, Disturbing but I'm with it. Posted by Sepia., Sat Oct-18-14 01:36 AM
This is my first season of this show. I'll be binge watching seasons 1-3 soon.
I need to see why folks are hating on Coven, lol. It's got Angela Bassett so I hope I like it.
|
86552, Coven was a little too campy and more of a comedy than horror. Posted by bwood, Sun Oct-19-14 05:37 PM
It was still solid in my opinion and had the most streamlined and focused story throughout out of all the first 3 so far. It also had the most satisfying ending.
But to me Season One is still the best IMO.

86555, The Edward Mordrake story has always been interesting to me... Posted by StephBMore, Fri Oct-24-14 08:19 AM
I would have never thought it would be featured on this show...Can't wait to see part 2.
I don't like old girl who is the "fortune teller"...I wasn't fond of her last season either...like she should be on some teeny bopper show lol...however, the guy she's working with...he must have a freakishly huge member and I wish we could see that.
Anyway, love Dandy. I like how well Finn Wittrock is playing that role...he's actually stealing the show for me...and everyone knows I love me some Lange (can i say i wasn't fond of her performance this week...)
I wonder how the twins are going to work out their issues.
Very good set up episode, i love how they made the halloween one a two parter

86556, I REALLY liked episode 2 Posted by Dae021, Wed Oct-22-14 09:52 AM
- Chiklis is great, and dastardly
- Evan really doing his thing, i'm rocking with him
- Angela manages to make everything sexy
- the twists that tie the characters was great
- That fucking Clown when his mask fell off! Yo that mask is necessary!
- Dandy is not ok, he is NOT ok he might be one of the scariest characters in this whole thing. For all intents and purposes everyone else in Freak show would do anything to be "normal" and Dandy is. He just wants to be a freak. He has freak tendencies underneath, he's a lot more like the clown than we could've ever thought. He's a child, but he's sadistic. His mother is batshit insane. I really like this character.
- EY YOUNG, DAT FIONA!!! You gone just through Criminal in and act like that shit is ok and normal! I damn near jumped off my couch!
This might be my favorite season so far, and I wanted nothing to do with it before the season.
- Did anyone catch that Nod to "Freaks" the old movie?
|
86557, I really enjoy this show for some reason lol Posted by CherNic, Thu Oct-23-14 12:34 PM
Like everybody's all in on their character, no mailins. And Patti was a beast there's no way I wouldn't have flinched with that knife on me. I kinda want Twisty to turn against hat boy though he's nuts.
|
86558, That's it??? Posted by lease54, Wed Oct-29-14 10:24 PM
Twisty is gone?
Jessica's Dom scene kicked ass! and was that a woman peeing in cup????
Twisty blew off his own face, that makes sense. I actually liked that Mordrake took Twisty because he , in a way, was innocent in his denial. He WAS a good clown, he just didnt feed them and made them watch him do clown stuff
And Miss Patti gone too!
i wish i could have seen her beat Dandy with a spoon

Sorry I'm late y'all.
|
86560, interesting... Posted by StephBMore, Thu Oct-30-14 10:26 AM
definitely didn't expect Twisty to be gone so early...I thought he'd last a little bit longer. His story was interesting but I need to #actually one thing and that's how he shot himself in the face. it would have made more sense if he had put the gun under his chin, than in his mouth (with his jaw blown off). That's just me.
I really thought Twisty would be this season's "villain" but I guess it's going to be Dandy (of course...). I am glad he came into this own...he's literally my fav person on the show. He's outshining Lange. This has to be my least fav portrayal by Lange...but it's early so I will let it go.
This season is quite disturbing though...and i like how it's not campy like previous seasons. I think it's a bit ironic that the season they do a circus/freak show would be the least campy. I figure that's on purpose and I appreciate it.
I need to watch this one again because i missed some of the part where Elsa is telling Mordrake about the worst time of her life.
SNUFF FILM THO!!!

86561, im still mad that Miss Patti is gone already Posted by lease54, Sat Nov-01-14 08:27 PM

|
86562, That early emphasis on Twisty makes more sense now... Posted by wallysmith, Mon Nov-03-14 10:10 AM
I was wondering why he wasn't as "mysterious" as previous seasons in how the serial killer was portrayed. Sucks he's gone, but knowing this show, I'm guessing there's a chance he's not GONE gone. Pretty cool to see Dandy's full heel turn though... and that's not his *real* name right?
The show is sharper when it's only one hour, instead of 90 minutes. It was fun for the opener but not sure why they continued it three weeks in.
Still not completely sold yet on the season, but I've come around a bit now that the various plotlines are starting to solidify.
|
86563, That clown's backstory was painfully goddamn corny Posted by Deebot, Mon Nov-03-14 09:44 AM

|
86564, I agree...Twisty's back story was TERRIBLE Posted by jamalbricks, Mon Nov-03-14 02:47 PM
I was expecting something much more believable/realistic. That has been the worst story so far this season, but I'm still in and expect to see some good things as the season progresses.

86565, Mary Eunice (from Asylum) is returning... Posted by StephBMore, Thu Oct-30-14 11:14 AM
...and I wonder how that will work given that she's in her 20s in Asylum, she would be in her teens in the 50s? Maybe she was older than I thought?
Obviously we will see the events that lead up to Pepper being committed.
I'm starting to wonder if Elsa is really Jude (remember Jude was a prostitute before she became a nun, Elsa was also a prostitute).
I wonder if something happened that made her run away and hid in the asylum.
|
86566, the actress is returning or the character Posted by astralblak, Mon Nov-03-14 09:47 AM

|
86567, both? the actress is reprising her character for this season Posted by StephBMore, Mon Nov-03-14 10:33 AM
recently read an article that stated all 4 seasons are connected which is hilarious now because they stressed so much during Season 2 that the storylines and seasons were not connected...so in Season 3 when they referenced the Asylum I was like oh. ok.
But then this season we see Pepper (who goes to the Asylum for killing her sister's baby). The nun returns to pick up Pepper? Or confront her? IDK. But yeah.

|
86569, RE: Episode 5: Pink Cupcakes Posted by Pamalama, Thu Nov-06-14 01:12 PM
I felt a touch of Monster's Ball too, with the 'Make me feel something' line. Which is slightly ironic considering Angela slammed the movie. Either way, I thought she owned this episode with the doctor's office scene. That's one big ass clitoris if it was used as a penis all these years.
Dandy saying he wasn't a clown was laughable. He's the biggest clown on the show. Francis convoy plays batshit crazy better than any actress out there.
|
86570, I'm looking for connections now... Posted by StephBMore, Thu Nov-06-14 08:17 PM
This episode was interesting...I pretty much figured Bassett was having a miscarriage which is odd if she was a hermaphrodite but come to find out she's not but it's obvious her husband is really gay and is using these "freakish" ladies to be normal while still satisfying his real urges for masculinity.
However, now I'm curious to see know how she used her little something extra...she said it was fully functional which i took to mean it could do everything and she tried everything with it...so either this is a writing flaw or she was lying...
This season has a few consistency issues and I feel like it's because they are trying to connect all the seasons when initially that wasn't the plan. This is the first season I've been like "this doesn't make sense..." but that does not take from this show for me, I'm a fan.
Pretty sure Dandy is related to Dr. Thredson from Season 2. That crazy manifesting all over the place.

I'm just not invested in any of the characters.
The plot is all over the place, the reveals have been weak or corny
the gore is actually a bit over the top
and Jessica Lange has become snooze fest predictable and annoying. No one, especially a group, is going to trust some one with that many "coincidences". I really hope they kill her off

86578, Gotta be honest, this is my least fav season... Posted by StephBMore, Fri Nov-21-14 01:42 PM
which isn't saying too much because the other seasons were great but right now...I'm like...this season is ridiculous and i feel they chose this theme because it's what ppl wanted. As I recall I thought initially the season 4 would be a vampires in New Mexico theme...sort of wish that happened because there was so much potential in this season and now it's a "we just want to know how this ends" feel. i'm not that motivated to discuss the shows after (although I do still live tweet it randomly but not as much as i did other seasons).
It's just messy and I have no clue what's really going on...as far as, what's this season really about...it's so many minor story lines, no big story line at all. Twisty should have been introduced later and used more...
or either Dandy should have been the killer throughout the whole thing and we didn't find out until the end...
but nah, Im' not feeling this too much.
RIP to Ma Petite tho.

86583, Tupperware Massacre!!! Posted by StephBMore, Thu Dec-11-14 12:39 PM
Arguably one of the better episodes of the season (if not the best so far).
Fitt Wittrock SHINES as Dandy...he should be nominated for best supporting actor (I guess he's a supporting actor? I don't think he's a lead). When he said "i am a God" all i thought about was Kanye West...and you know...he is...cuz all he said was "$1 million cash" and without hesitation the cop turned and shot old girl dead. The confidence Dandy has now that he has come into his own is amazing...well done.
Everything else...i can do without. I just want to watch Dandy.
Although the "strong" man trying to commit suicide was quite interesting to watch...and then I realize that gay men were "freaks" during this time...but I can't help to wonder what that hustle man's penis looks like.

86585, how so? Posted by StephBMore, Thu Dec-11-14 05:28 PM
the plot, writing of this season aside, Dandy is the only person who has consistently owned each scene he's in...he's the star of each scene. I don't know if he's too over the top considering the whole season is a bit over the top and crazy.
But i find myself more interested in him than anything or anyone else, and he's not even a major player in the AHS series.

i mean, this is a sometimes campy supernatural show so big and over the top flies...i actually thought the musical numbers were too much...and with Dandy i feel like we are watching someone finally delve into madness and the high he gets from it is the greatest thing ever, so yeah, he's very confident and why shouldn't he be, he was right...he won't get in trouble, at least not by this cop.
lol.

I was impressed with how captivating she is on screen.
No words, just pure emotion in her face and body language.
This was one of the best episodes.
|
86591, I liked the Pepper devoted episode Posted by StephBMore, Fri Dec-19-14 11:05 AM
its good to see back story on her since all we knew from Asylum was that she "killed" her nephew. While the story played out, I thought that when she said something was wrong with the baby that the baby was a freak too because it was Pepper's baby (perhaps the sister's husband got her pregnant). I missed a few minutes, so if this was the case, can someone enlighten me? but then he goes "you never bonded with the baby" and I was like oh well it was hers. No? Yes?
anyway nice tie in to Asylum.

86594, still here. it picked up again after episode 9. Posted by rhymesandammo, Fri Jan-09-15 03:34 PM
episodes 5-8 hit a bit of a lag but they are back on track.
neal patrick harris was a great addition. nice to see they found a place for jamie brewer. i wonder if the doll being alive is real or all in his head. cool twilight zone reference.
i want more dandy. my prediction is he ends up buying the freak show, flash forward to next halloween and he performs an act, not realizing the legend of edward mordrake, who will eventually come back with twisty and take dandy. only fitting way for that character to go out.
just hope the twins survive. i love sarah. next week looks cool, more danny huston, who looks like he gives jimmy his hands back similar to how he gave elsa her legs back.

86595, season finale tonight Posted by latenitemix, Wed Jan-21-15 02:53 PM
my expectations aren't high this season has kinda been all over the place

86596, Finale was okay, but this was easily the weakest season Posted by Marauder21, Thu Jan-22-15 09:16 AM
Dandy buys the Freak Show, has a bunch of plans for it, then kills everyone. Okay?

86597, This season fucking sucked. Only three GREAT episodes Posted by bwood, Thu Jan-22-15 09:34 AM
The first 2 episodes and Pepper's episode are great.
This season was so wack I might not be back come October.
Jesus, it was hard to give a fuck.

86598, I've got seven episodes saved up on my dvr. Posted by wallysmith, Thu Jan-22-15 11:35 AM
I was wondering why there weren't updates on this thread... but I guess it's obvious now.
Sucks to hear it was so disappointing... a carnival setting had so much promise.
I'm still looking forward to hearing about next season's premise though. When the show is on, it's really on, and maybe Lange's departure might free up the storyline a bit.

86599, this season was trash Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Jan-22-15 10:11 AM
i mean not trash enough to get me to not watch every week there was some great acting and some of the episodes were good but something about the story line just didn't flow right and the finale was MAD weak
hope next season is better.

86600, Glad this season is over... Posted by StephBMore, Thu Jan-22-15 10:19 AM
undeniable the weakest season of all of them. Dandy was one of the few highlights...Neil Patrick Harris also shined in his rather small appearance (that almost seemed unnecessary). It felt like none of the characters were developed...they were just there...acting. I didn't feel a connection or cared for anyone...except Dandy. He was the only one who seemed to OWN their role.
Supposedly next season will be a departure from the first few...I'm hoping they do something more realistic...like a serial killer. They could do a whole season on a zodiac/son of sam type killer...or rather do a cult.
I kept watching but I just really wanted it to be over toward the middle...i kept waiting for a high point in this season that never came.

86601, agreed. Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Jan-22-15 10:37 AM
if angela bassett wasn't in it i don't think i woulda kept watching like i didn't get how theo shows up for 2 minutes in 2 episodes like wtf was the point of this nigga? neil patrick harris character shoulda showed up earlier i feel like it took them too long to kill that one dude that was trying to take all the freaks out wish there was more with the giant lady angela basset's character didn't get enough story they killed off the clown too early IMO didn't like how they killed the one girl maggie it was just mad thrown together imo jessica lange always does her thing but even her character seemed a bit empty like her story was mad interesting but the way it was shown was too disjointed and didn't seem to have a POINT
definitely the weakest season and i really hope that next season is better.

86602, yes to all of that! Posted by DJ007, Thu Jan-22-15 12:39 PM
Everything seemed underdevopled and it was all over place at times which I really hated because the talent and potential were all there. _____________________________________________________ "You can win with certainty with the spirit of "one cut". "Musashi Miyamoto

86603, There was just so much potential... Posted by StephBMore, Thu Jan-22-15 05:12 PM
I'm not even mad about the clown, because he was to serve as the catalyst for Dandy but sheesh, why all these half ass stories? they just left a lot of things open to interpetation which can sometimes be fine but it felt lazy...like no we won't give you more on the freaks lives, when they have 13 episodes to discuss and give background and character development.
Elsa's back story was the most interesting...but how interesting was it that the Axeman (from Coven) was the one Lange didn't want to be with last season but in this season, all she wanted was him. lol.

86604, They had no idea what to do with NPH's character at all Posted by Marauder21, Thu Jan-22-15 03:24 PM
They build him up in one episode, then he goes nuts and flames out the next week.
Seemed utterly pointless.

86605, finally Posted by lfresh, Thu Jan-22-15 02:08 PM
dandy should have been gone as fast as that clown what an annoying character
neil did great that was too fast though
not sure i cared about jessica langes character anymore at the end
dunno there were some good episodes but it feels like it got muddled and wanted me to enjoy aspects that just werent good the clown dandy eva
very meh characters

86606, Elsa's Storyline was so wack Posted by JtothaI, Mon Mar-30-15 09:45 AM
Finally finished watching...why the fuck did they give her her last show if they knew she was about to be aired out?
Made no sense. What a waste. Now I know why it was sitting on my DVR for months.
Good riddance.
