Hip-Hop, R&B Community Mourns D’Angelo’s Death: Jamie Foxx, Jill Scott, Maxwell, And More

The legendary singer passed away at age 51 following his private battle with cancer.

By Regina Cho

October 14, 2025 1:48pm

On Tuesday morning (Oct. 14), the music community came together to mourn the loss of legendary musician D’Angelo. The trailblazing artist is widely regarded as an immeasurable influence in the world of R&B, neo-soul, and more, drawing countless tributes from heartbroken fans and artists.

He was 51 years old and died following his battle with pancreatic cancer. His death was confirmed by his family.

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life … After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025,” his family said in a statement. “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”

Throughout his decades-long career, D’Angelo shared three bodies of work that are regularly referenced and respected as some of the greatest albums of this generation. His debut studio album, Brown Sugar (1995), was certified platinum by the RIAA. Following that was 2000’s Voodoo, which housed fan-favorites like “Send It On” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” After a hiatus, he returned in 2014 with Black Messiah. He was nominated for 14 Grammys over the course of his career, and won four.

View tributes from D’Angelo’s fellow artist below and revisit his VIBE cover story here.

I remember hearing your music for the first time… I said to myself damn whoever this is they are anointed… Then when I finally got a chance to see you… Like everyone when they saw the most incredible music video of our time… I was blown away… I thought to myself I have to see this person in concert… I had my chance to see you at the house of blues… You came out and got right down to business… Your voice was silky and flawless… I was graciously envious of your style and your swag… I was also in pure awe of your talents…. roaming around on each instrument, displaying your expertise in every note and every song as I watch you command, the crowd, mostly women …me and all the guys that were with me understood the mission…It was time to let our girls enjoy this moment and not bother them… You took them on a musical journey of soul, funk, an overall artistic romance… The incredible dismount of your incredible song. How do you feel still goes down and performance history… God put you here for a reason and we were all lucky enough to see what God had made… That’s why today real tears run down my face … to hear the news that God has taken one of his special creations home… I know God doesn’t make mistakes… But this one hurts like hell… rest up my friend… you will be missed forever… But your music and your impression will be felt for generations to come…. REST IN POWER AND BEAUTIFUL MUSIC….. You are one of one….

on my 9th birthday, march 6 2000, i landed at Sam Goody at the south bay galleria. i had $20 in birthday money and my eyes set on leaving with one thing.

VOODOO by D'Angelo.

citas world had 'left&right' on loop; brown sugar became a staple at home and nothing even matters by ms.hill was on repeat, so i had no doubt that voodoo would deliver. i had no idea that would help shape my musical dna. the amount of raps ive wrote to BOOTY on the front porch that year, the amount of times ive tried to mimic vocal phrasing from SEND IT ON, the scratches the disc ended up with from repeating THE ROOT......too many. ONE MO'GIN still puts me in the same trance as it did when i first heard it. that dragging sway of tempo that sounds like a porch sitting rocking chair. that grumpy but loose bassline. the subject of it, that feeling hes describing felt like a mirror. I took that and wrote RING RING RING (hence the one mo gin line). i couldnt understand how someone could write something so simple but personal but broad but genius. thats how special he was. a savant. a true alien.

i am so lucky to have gotten my copy of VOODOO when i did. we are so lucky to have been alive to enjoy his art. my musical dna was helped shaped by this man. forever grateful. safe travels

Thank you. Thank you a million times over. To create, to shift, to shape and reshape, to push, to inspire, to fuel, to illuminate. An artist can only dream to achieve one or a few of these things. How amazing to witness him who did all of it and so masterfully.
I rediscovered Voodoo in my college days. It opened up the world for me. It became a defining element of art that’s very responsible for where I started. I stack my backgrounds the way I do because of him. I feel unafraid to experiment and evolve because of him.
I think we were all hoping to hear much more from him, but he has given us more than a lifetime of sound. Nothing but gratitude to be around in the same space and time as that sound. God Bless his family. Superbly done. Thank you thank you thank you.

“People need reflection,” she began.

“I regret not having more time with you. Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius. Thank you for being a beacon of light to a generation and beyond who had no remembrance of the legacy that preceded us. Thank you for charting the course and for making space during a time when no similar space really existed.”

“You imaged a unity of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood to a generation that only saw itself as having to be one or the other. It is my earnest prayer that you are in peace, far away from selfishness, fear and/or controlling interests,” she continued.

“Far from possessiveness, far from greed, far from manipulation, far from exploitation, far from intentionally designed chaos and that you Brother are in peace, in bliss and in eternal light and fulfillment with our Father in heaven. I Love you and I miss you. May God grant peace and shelter to your family, true friends and genuine appreciators, Brother, King.”

We are deeply saddened by the passing of D'Angelo. He was a peerless visionary who effortlessly blended the classic sounds of soul, funk, gospel, R&B, and jazz with a hip-hop sensibility.

A known perfectionist, D'Angelo released 3 albums that were widely celebrated as masterpieces by both the music community and his beloved fans around the world. He was heavily awarded and critically acclaimed for his talents.

D'Angelo's songwriting, musicianship, and unmistakable vocal styling has endured and will continue to inspire generations of artists to come.

(I typed this from a vibe.com screenshot so...forgive if I - not Justin Timberlake - misspelled something Justin did not in this process)

NEVER FORGET HEARING BROWN SUGAR FOR THE FIRST TIME.

IT CHANGED ME. YOU CHANGED ME. IT WAS THE MOST PIVOTAL MOMENT IN ESTABLISHING CONFIDENCE IN MY OWN VOICE. FOR THE FIRST TIME, I HEARD A SOUND THAT REFLECTED THE SOUNDS I GREW UP WITH - EARLY R&B BUT "NOW" IT WAS INTERTWINED WITH A MODERN EDGE. THE CHORDS AND ARRANGEMENT CARRIED A MIXTURE OF CHURCH/JAZZ/FUNK. THE HARMONIES DELICATELY DANCING WITH ONE ANOTHER. IT SAW IN MY SPIRIT AND ALWAYS WILL.

AND THEN???! VOODOO??? WHERE DO I BEGIN WITH THIS ONE???

MAYBE MY FAVORITE MIXED ALBUM OF ALL TIME. THE RAWNESS. THAT TOOK TIME TO CULTIVATE AND PROCESS. CREATED AN ABSOLUTELY TRANSCENDENT LISTENING EXPERIENCE. THE LEGENDARY PLAYERS AND COLLABORATORS. THE SOUNDS. THE WAY IT MADE COLORS DANCE AROUND MY HEAD. IT GRABBED ME. IT SHOOK ME. IWAS CHANGED ONCE AGAIN.

THE VOODOO TOUR AT RADIO CITY WAS ONE OF THE BEST CONCERT EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. YOU. QUEST. PINO. POYSER. AND EVERYONE ON THAT STAGE HAD JUST RIPPED THE FACES OFF THAT CROWD. AND THEN I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GRAB A SACRED MOMENT WITH YOU BACKSTAGE. AND TELL YOU HOW IN AWE OF YOU i WAS.

(THE PICTURE BEFORE IS FROM THAT VERY MOMENT...)

YOU WERE KIND. UNDER-SPOKE.

I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT.

I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT BLACK MESSIAH OR "MY FAVORITE LAURYN COLLAB" OR "THOSE BEAUTIFUL COVERS CAPTURED IN LIVE RECORDINGS." BUT TO PUT IT THE WAY I KNOW BEST IN THIS MOMENT:

YOU TOOK R&B AND PUT IT IN ALL CAPITALS.

MESHED IT WITH SOMETHING ELSE AND CHANGED THE LANDSCAPE. MADE IT SOMEIHTING MORE.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED.

SENDING LOVE AND PRAYERS TO YOUR FAMILY.

YOU WILL BE MISSED DEEPLY.

Brother @sharifbey re-introduced us and you called me the Zappa of music and I called you the Jesus of Soul and R&B.

Our first meeting was in 1998 in Studio A at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan 🍎and @ommaskeith and I were working in Studio B.
You had @questlove and @leonwaremusic in the control and the live room was like a museum of every keyboards 🎹 and other musical instruments you could think of. Yall pushed play and i was blown away!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
I didn't know at that time it was the Vodoo album y'all were working on. 🤯🤯

We both loved Sly Stone and George Clinton.

You wanted to know how Sa-Ra Creative Partners remade “Just Like A Baby” by Sly. We always talked about working together but it never happened.
.

I send my deepest condolences to the Archer Family and fellow loved ones abd fans all over the world.

We just lost a REAL ONE. 😢😢💔💔💔 Heartbroken

Your name and musical genius will live on in all of our hearts and minds forever!!
Until we funk around again, my friend.

I just realized I’ve been holding my breath since I heard the news. I guess I’m afraid that if I take a real deep breath, I’ll start to cry, and although I don’t have a problem with crying necessarily, I just don’t feel like it today. I wish I didn’t have to have to think about how 51 is too young or try to wrap metaphors around the importance of another’s impact on my creative DNA, but here goes: Superstars burn brightly for everyone to see. They are scattered and everywhere. They aren’t cheap necessarily, but they litter the night sky. D wasn’t a superstar, he was a North Star. Someone who laid down a creative gauntlet and had the talent, fearlessness, vulnerability and vision to coalesce everything anyone had ever known about soul and funk into a sound no one had ever heard before but somehow had also felt from two generations before we were born. He sounded like every record my parents had and every record they forbid me to listen to. His was the star that so many of us measured our musical heartbeats to. His was a light we all aspired to touch. I didn’t know anyone that wanted to BE D’Angelo. Sure, a lot of people wanted to (and still do) sound like him, but most of us aspired to create things that FEEL like his music, his heartbeat. In that regard, the North Star will never dim. But 51 is too young and I’m going to hold my breath a little while longer. God bless you and your family, D. Rest In Peace,

D’Angelo was one of the most talented and dedicated artists that I have ever witnessed. To know him and work with him for so many years was a blessing. He inspired us every day to advance and nurture the movement of Neo-Soul, influencing the entire R&B and hip hop culture at a time when Black music needed to push the envelope. A self-taught musician and producer, his gifts were undeniable and are reflected in the millions of people around the world who love and respect his artistry to this day. I will cherish his legacy always, and I’m eternally grateful to have played a part in bringing such a rare talent to the world. I pray my dear friend is resting peacefully where he is without pain and knows how much light he brought to others. Forever my brother, until we meet again.

Rest in POWER to a multi-gifted God of SOUL. One of the Neo-Soul forefathers, one of the original genius sex symbols, and a master of sensual, transcendental music. Just like everyone else, I remember growing from a mesmerized fangirl seeing 'Untitled (How Does It Feel)', to a true appreciator of your brilliance as I became an adult. One of my biggest influences in the realm of real R&B music. In shock and praying for your family and loved ones. Nile Rodgers, Beyoncé, Jill Scott, Missy Elliott, and More Remember D’Angelo

Tyler, the Creator, Bootsy Collins, Flea, DJ Premier, Aminé, and many others also paid tribute to the late R&B legend, and Yasiin Bey livestreamed a memorial video on Instagram

By Jazz Monroe

October 14, 2025

The music world is mourning D’Angelo, the maverick R&B singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, who has died of cancer at 51. Nile Rodgers, Beyoncé, Jill Scott, Missy Elliott, Bootsy Collins, Flea, Tyler, the Creator, Bartees Strange, DJ Premier, and Aminé were among those to pen tributes on social media, and Yasiin Bey memorialized his friend in a tearful Instagram livestream. Flavor Flav and DJ Quik also posted a photo in tribute to the musician.

Nile Rogers wrote about his first meeting D’Angelo: “My friend Gary Harris brought this musician named D’Angelo over to my NYC apt. He was trying to figure out what to do with the music he’d brought with him. I listened to every cut...not just out of respect but because it was smoking. At the end of the encounter he asked me, ‘What should I do with it?’ I remember this as if it were yesterday. I said, ‘Put it out. It’s perfect!’ Being the #artist he is, I guess he had to explore some ways to make it better. About a year later I heard one of those songs on the radio. It was #genius and it was exactly what he had played for me. I know...I still have the original cassette.”

Beyoncé wrote on her website, “Rest in peace, Michael Eugene Archer, known to the world of music as the inimitable D’Angelo. We thank you for your beautiful music, your voice, your proficiency on the piano, your artistry. You were the pioneer of neo-soul, and that changed and transformed rhythm & blues forever. We will never forget you.”

Bootsy Collins posted on X, “Danggit!🤟Say it ain't so, but we just lost a friend, a creator & legend, D’Angelo!😭 Prayer’s going out to his family & friends!🙏🙏🙏 We all lolve u lil-brother. R.I.P...”

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea wrote, “One of my all time favorites whose records I went to again and again. Noone did anything funkier over the last 30 years. I never knew him but humbled myself before his music. What a rare and beautiful voice and an inimitable approach to songwriting. What a musician!!! He changed the course of popular music. Fly free with the angels D’angelo, we will listen to you forever and always be moved. I drop to my knees and pray.”

Missy Elliott wrote, “Rest Peacefully D’Angelo🙏🏾🕊️ No parent want to see their children go but it’s painful for children to see their parents go to so send prayers up for his son who also lost his mom this year for strength 🙏🏾.”

Tyler, the Creator penned a lengthy tribute, writing:

Bartees Strange posted, “I don’t post here much but the loss of D’Angelo is going to be felt by music so deeply for such a long time. This is a tough one. I love that guy and I love his music. Rest up D’Angelo.”

Doja Cat wrote, “Rest in peace D’angelo. My thoughts, love and prayers go out to his family and friends. A true voice of soul and inspiration to many brilliant artists of our generation and generations to come.”

Cadence Weapon shared, “I'm absolutely stunned. RIP to the legend D'Angelo. Bar none, one of the greatest musicians of this generation He took the torch from Prince and ran with it. His reclusiveness has limited the wider public's appreciation of his talent but dude was an absolute beast. A genius. Highly recommend anyone who is unfamiliar with his work to check out 2019’s Devil’s Pie: D’Angelo documentary.”

Aminé wrote, “i was 15 when my older cousin took me on a roadtrip to the bay and played me all of brown sugar and voodoo for the very first time. my life changed that day and i was obsessed. Rest in paradise D’angelo. U really meant so much to me and my family.”

Jill Scott’s post reads, “I told you a long time ago-You ain’t gon understand everything & everything ain’t meant 4 U ,nor I, to understand.
