178996, Philly Doesn't Love The Roots
Posted by makaveli, Fri Sep-19-08 05:14 PM
enough. now i know there are lot of roots die hards in philly, i'm friends with a lot of them. but in general, a lot of people, especially in the hood, don't have enough love for the roots. as a city, we should have more pride in them.
178998, yeah.

This may seem unrelated but I feel there's a connection. I've always felt that The Roots have done more for hip hop than hip hop has done for The Roots. Not like anyone is owed anything. I don't think that for a minute. It's just deep to see something so transcendental overlooked by where it comes from. I may be wandering too far off to make sense.

i know what your saying. i mean its obvious that a lot a big names in hip hop have much respect for the roots. but hip hop as a whole? not enough. just like philly. i love hearin thought shout out all these different spots in philly, you'd think the people in those spots would think it was cool that was one of the best mc's is constantly shoutin them out.
179023, don't just out Illadelph

i saw these dudes with Kast back in 01 I believe and this year with Badu.. what they do for instrumentation is on another level..

hip-hop doesn't understand the importance of The Roots..

can't speak on Philly.. don't live there.. but I just hope the world catches on and not on some bullshit when they're dead and gone and then dudes are like yeah they were important

Things Fall Apart is still that heat

I think alot of people DO have respect for the Roots in Philly. However what do you want them to do build a shrine to them?

I know people that don't like the last 2 albums but they STILL respect the Roots.

I know people that do go out to shows as much as they use to. Either because they seen them a bunch of time or just can't make it. They STILL respect The Roots.

I say stop worrying what everybody else is doing and show love your own way.

As a group that VALIDATES THE ARTFORM TO THOSE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND, I can't say y'all will ever get the props they deserve.
By and by, my brother got your new solo jawn. He likes it.

cosign
im from philly and people arent really behind them as much as they should be, but its not so bad
i think the case is the same outkast in atl, most people, especially those in the hood dont really back outkast
179172, question?
Posted by thaaarza, Fri Sep-26-08 11:57 AM
ive lived in philly all my life, currently reppin the 19104 w. philly.... and i know plenty of people that like the roots, respect the roots, etc...

but, like some of ya'll said before me, i think the way that philly shows its love for the the roots is in line with the overall character of the city.

i think the quakers got it wrong by labeling us the city of brotherly love way back in the 16,17,1800s, whatever it was...

anyway, so do you think that if the roots were huge, mainstream, all over the radio, all over the world... do you think philly would really embrace and respect the roots, or just say "theres some more cats that got too big to still have love for their hometown"?

because i think in this city, we respect the hardworking, blue-collar cats, the ones goin out do what they gotta do to make ends meet.... and theres no act, whether its from philly or wherever, that gets as much respect from me as the legendary, hardworking, roots crew from illadelph.

Ask Kobe.

We hate here. It's in our blood.

the roots aren't just not loved by philly. they're slept on all across the u.s. you ask any cat, in any hood, he'll think you talking about the mini-series...blame it on the politics

Anything you could have civic pride in - music, arts, food, whatever - Philly flat out IGNORES.
Ever notice this town has better food/restaurants than any east coast city not named New York? Ever notice how no one in Philly gives a shit?
Ever notice how Eve is the best female MC not named Jean Grae? Ever notice how no one in Philly gives a shit?
I could go on and on.
It generally works as cats get mad local love initially. Examples: The Roots South St/DYWM days (aka Power 99 used to play their songs), Eve when she first came out, Beans when he first came out, give it about a year and Freeway will sadly face the same fate. Cats used to say "Philly's M. Night Shymalan" - they don't anymore. The TV show they film here (It's Always Sunny...) is seeing the light right now, but probably won't next season.
That's Philadelphia, the city of brotherly lo-hey fuck you! We booed Santa Claus and we'll boo you!

I've given up listen to it.
Damn shame too.
I used to love listening to Power 99 and Y100.
You had Radioactive with Cosmic Kev and Kolby Kolb. Y100 would break new artists. Sigh.
