5963, CHAPTER 1 - The Acquisition.
Posted by truth0ne SGC, Tue May-23-06 05:13 PM
You just got the program and are ready to make a few beats from the comfort of your own desktop... but HOW?

Most people just start off by experimenting with the pre-installed sounds, but get bored about 3 days into it.

How does one acquire new sounds?
How can you ensure the sound quality of these new sounds?

Let's hear your methods...

my musician buddy gave me FL Studio 4 a few months ago(word up)

one of the gracious okp producers in a similar post suggested in order

to use your own samples, one must first import their MP3 or whatever

music file in a sound editor such as: Audacity; it's a free software and

can D/L to yo' PC. Convert your sound into a WAV file; chop it/freak it/

and find the killer sample, sound, loop, etc...

import it into FL and then don't sleep 'cause I found out once you

start messing with the program, there is no turning back if you really

love music and want to get your geek out on!!! My IT/homie since

kindergarten, gave me 2 programs: Soundforge 7.0 & Acid Pro 4.0. I

fucked with those a bit; although messing with FL and

Audacity helped me understand how to use those programs. I do have

the manual for FL studio 4. I read about halfway through it and

applied what I read through application. I learned more by not

sleeping regular hours and

simply messing with all the features and tweeking all the knobs until

I found the sounds I was looking for. Straight crack, I tell ya....
6698, well to me

yes i do use the pre-installed sounds

its not that many. but i try to make the most of what i got

but there are infinite ways to make beats give only a few sounds to mess with. its becomes a challenge. thats the fun part.

because of this i dont get sleep anymore and my sleeping schedule is fucked up.

Truthfully, there is no best way! You have to figure what your niche' is and freak that! The best way is to sit and become one with Fl or whatever you are using to make beats! As someone previously mentioned I, toiled with the Fl sound bank, but those get you but so far. Through, trial and error I played/play with sounds and might still use the fl sounds and layer em. Go back and study all producers. Hip Hop or not... The rest is up to you...

it depends on what kind of beat you want. if i want something that's complex, like if i'm doing drum n bass, OR if i want to shuffle the beat, i create a layer. i find it more intuitive to have all my hats, rides, snares, kicks etc laid out in piano roll form. much more freedom than you get with the step sequencer, and you can see the entire drum track and the direction you're going with it, instead of fucking your brain up with different step sequencer patterns.

But if you're doing a fairly simple hip hop beat or something, i think the step sequencer is faster & easier.

dont realize the patterns
u got infinite patterns in fl
u can construct the song right in the program most the time
10367, sometimes it starts with a sliced smaples, other times a bassline...
Posted by low2behold, Wed Jul-05-06 06:02 PM
most time i start with a simple drum pattern if im at a loss for what the actual track should sound like... the best is when i have a fresh sample that u can basically foreshadow how u want all the supplemental parts to go before u even loaded the sound files up...

5973, RE: THE Fruity Loops Post - Part 1.
Posted by DaKidFromHaiti, Tue May-23-06 05:50 PM
What I do is, I chop my samples up on Cool Edit Pro 2.0, then I transfer them to FL, easy as that.

And construct a beat, I put snares on the first red buttons, and kick on the first gray buttons, that's just the basic beat, but later in the song, i'll add more detail to it you know.

And sounds, I got a lot sent to me by a friend, I have no idea where he got them, but over the week end I'll upload some for you guys.

I look for that and did some amazing loop. I am experimenting more with cubase. I am finishing now my second street cd and I am waitin for my mpd 16. I heard you can use it with fruity. lets see how is goin to be.

Posted by Zoltan_Cleotis_Johnson_III, Fri May-26-06 10:32 AM
As far as getting FL Studio, I think that it is well worth the purchase. But it can easily be downloaded from your pick of p2p programs.

As far as starting out it would be good to read the help manual located within the program just to learn the basics of how everything works.

In order to get good with FL your going to have to get good with some sort of .wav editting program. I personally use Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition (both can be purchased or downloaded from your pick of p2p programs).

When it comes to chopping up a loop this is where your own personally style comes in. I have heard people just chop up 4 bars, 2 bars, or even 8 bar loops.

And some people get more exact and chop out specific sounds of instruments (drums, horns, strings) or a specific part of a 4 bar measure that they like.

Either way you wanna save those chopped pieces into a file and import them into fruity loops using a "sampler" channel.

You can link these sampler channels to buttons on your keyboards using a "layer" channel. Which turns your keyboard into a botleg version of a trigger finger or mpd16. I had the trigger finger and actually prefer my keyboard over it (plus i broke it).

Once you have everything setup, it all up to your creativity.

Another note is that, everything you make is not goin to be hot. And your first couple of beats may be trash, but FL, like everything else in life is a learning process.

Dont aim to sound like someone because there are thousands of people already on that road.

If I missed anything or if help is needed dont be afraid to give me a holla.

Posted by beIMAO, Sun Jun-04-06 12:23 PM
I want to apply a a reverb effect to one section of a song. From 97 to 144 on the playlist. I know I could use the effect on the master in the fx mixer but that would apply it to the whole song. Is there a way to automate the the effect so it kicks in at just the 97 or a way to apply it to just that section of the playlist. I know I could just duplicate all those channels and apply the effect to each instrument and sample but I'd like to know if there is an easier way.

have the effect muted, go to a few cars before you want the effect to come in, turn record on, hit play and unmute the effect when you want it to come in, mute it when you want it to go away. it'll record that switching on and off.

the master levels seriously never go more than half a centimeter into the green. it's so low.

maybe it's just the mp3 compression? it shouldn't be that bad, though; it's at 192kbps. i know not all my mp3's sound that whack.

Is it possible to use the keyboard like you could hardware where you can assign different sounds to keys and hit them to produce the beat in real time?
6639, Yeah there are a few methods
Posted by Nabs, Tue May-30-06 07:13 PM
1. In the latest edition of FL XXL there a plugin called Direct Wave. You're able to slice and chop up any sample you want... you can also place it on any of the keys you'd like. It takes a lil trial and error

2. a plugin like Kontakt also does the job.... takes a lot of trial and error

3. chop up the sounds you want and load them into FL. Insert a new "Layer" on top of these, and right click the green light next to each sound... next click on "Set Children" (Its under the layers channel settings)... and last but not least, click on the layer and hit the arrow above "set children" and choose "Split".

now by clicking on the layer youre able to trigger each sound with a key (starting with Q).

and you can also use the Fruity Slicer. I think you can set the cue's in programs like Cool Edit, but I'm not 100% sure.
6737, you could also use the FPC generator....which is easier than

it but fam why ain't you got a midi keyboard at least? I mean you need a pad controller like Korg padKONTROL, akai mpd-16 or m-audio trigger-finger to really take advantage of FPC but at least a midi keyboard....

actually if you use the learn function of the FPC you can configure FPC easy for your typing keyboard....

10334, Question: Organizing your samples???
Posted by dgardfrey, Wed Jul-05-06 02:44 AM
I've had to redo several songs after lazily
saving my chopped samples on my desktop
and then moving them directly from my desktop to FL

Inevitably, my desktop gets crowded and I
move the samples into a permanent folder, but
FL loses track of the samples and I have to
reload and do the time stretching all over again.

(and sometimes the beat doesn't come out
as well as the first time I did it)

Ques: Is there a way to move your files without
having to redo time streching etc?
10370, RE: Question: Organizing your samples???
Posted by Blinky_Blinx, Wed Jul-05-06 06:12 PM
im in the exact same situation as you (the whole desktop thing) and my desktop gets crowded aswell. The only thing is i dont do my stretching on FL, i do it on Cool Edit and then save the version as a copy, that way i dont have to do all the restretching and such. So my suggestion is to do your stretching in the same program as you do your chopping (if thats possible), but then that depends on if you use another program to do your chopping or if you only have FL

Posted by dgardfrey, Wed Jul-05-06 08:47 PM
10425, This is what I do
Posted by Nabs, Thu Jul-06-06 07:04 AM
I have a folder for my beats and in the FL File options i have set that folder as 1 of my main folders. So that folder (say Beats) is always on the left side of my Fruity Loops interface.

For every beat or possible beat I make a new folder with the sample name and I number it so I can find it easily... I really dont recommend dragging from the desktop because you'll lose it eventually, just drag it from the folder inside of FL. (or right click the file and open it in a new channel).
