i enjoyed the beats you made with samples that no one else touched more than the famous samples you flipped. i had a long ass review but the internet ate it and that line was basically the gist of it.

good shit

I like the Elevators and Change Clothes remixes. Both pretty good. I didn't like the Made You Look remix, I do like the rock-rap stuff, but I felt it was too much rock, not enough hip hop. The rest of em, I liked the beats, but felt that they didn't fit those songs too well. Overall though, pretty good. Just one suggestion. PLEASE STOP REMIXING SONGS FROM THE BLACK ALBUM. Everybody and their grandma has done a Black Album remix. I mean, one or two on there is okay, but PLEASE don't make any more. And (this is nothing against you, just all producers) I don't think anybody can make a good remix to Roc Boys. The original beat just fit the track too perfectly.

these are just my opinions and i mean no disrespect with any comments.

k-os remix-i like the sample on the hook, the phone key tones on the 2nd verse are interesing, the rest of the beat was too rave-ish for me. sorry.

roots remix-hot all the way around, piano was fly (sounded like the shit from gimme your love, superfly, but i don't think it is.) nice bass and drums. i'd like to hear more like this.

vegas joint-not my cup of tea. i can't even pass judgement on this.

chronicle remix- i'm very familiar with the og and the beat is one of the beats in my beatmaking bible. i was just buggin off how pete flipped the original sample the other day. that being said, you had your work cut out for you, but your beat was hot. bass hot guitar hot, congas hot, harp hot... but the acapella sounded like it was the wrong tempo and it sounded like it started a half step late. you almost made it work but when he gets to the words "based on a true story" it just train wrecks. the words and the beat at least. but the beat i like for the very most part. after the 2nd verse you lost me tho bruh. i didn't get it.

i wasn't really feeling the other two. i like the message of miracualous apertures but i don't listen to nothing that sounds like this. so i can't speak on it like that. play this loudly, i just wasn't into it. sorry man. neither beat had a bassline and that's what i check for first.

but i did listen to all of em! let me know if you only want positive feedback i can do that too.

peace and check out that giorgio moroder catalog.

iono, not for me. i liked the first couple bars, but i wasn't into the drums. my favorite ladies i could fucks with tho. what kind of equipment do you use? and do you get your drums off vinyl?
42820, RE: wet ciggies,
Posted by cfinnerty, Mon Apr-27-09 08:26 PM
first off, thanks for the honest feedback, it's hard to come by these days. i don't think i have a sound yet, i'm still in experimental mode but i'm ready to break out of the conservative hip hop sound & incorporate the progressiveness of my live sound.

for equipment i've been using an mpc1000, korg karma synth and fl studio
42826, you're welcome
Posted by Flasher, Tue Apr-28-09 05:47 AM
i didn't mean to be rude or negative with any statements or comments. i listened to your music and broke it down from my perspective, i don't know what else i could possibly do.

i asked about your setup because i was curious about how you got your drums sounds.
42835, RE: wet ciggies,
Posted by cfinnerty, Tue Apr-28-09 10:40 AM
cool, i was just trying to say you give better feedback than most. as for the drums, though i have used drums from vinyl i usually chop breaks up from several collections i have & add 808s and drum machine sounds from sample libraries. i'm trying to learn compression techniques, but idk really where to begin

liked the chronicle remix; liked the tem blessed; the vegas one would be great, except i felt the vocals sounded too low compared to the beat; i wouldn't listen to that eye know something, maybe some ppl would, i just didn't like it; wasn't too big on play this loudly either; i like the beat you did for criminal, i just think black thoughts vocals sound too hard for that laid back of a beat. overall though, pretty good.

42818, Thanks. May I ask a question?

DO you listen to music other than J Dilla, Pete Rock type stuff?
42831, im a record guy
Posted by Flasher, Tue Apr-28-09 08:26 AM
i have a couple thousand and everyday i try to listen to a few. i've been playing shit like styx, booker t, isaac hayes, tomita, the beatles, the soundtrack to midnight express, procol harum, king tubby, the mothers of invention, galt macdermot... the beach boys.

i listen to just about anything. but i like older stuff. i like synthy shit too, but i'm picky about drums. if i don't like the drums, i probably won't like the song.

Whats the loop for the Philadelphia based rap? Just Blaze used that recently for Jay Electronica, I'm not familiar with the sample.

Beats sound cool, question tho, do you EQ your drums before you sample them?

I felt it would have sounded better with an RnB/Jazz type singer on the beats instead of rappers. But a few questions.
1. Did you sample the Peanuts theme song? haha, that was nice
2. Do you use live drums?
3. What was the sample on the 2nd to last song, the interlude? Cause idk if I'm right, but it sounded similar to this beat to me.

there's a chance- beat is noice. sample's hot. i like the bassline whether it was in the loop or not. the first emcee was can tho. the singer was ok.

soul dojo- not bad could be vastly improved with even just one note of bass. drums were dope. sound like scrabble.

lasalle- pretty damn good. clean soulful beat. programmed as to keep monotony to a minimum.

hourglass- nice drums, nice loops. where's the bass?

it's like love- i'm from the bay area too. but i don't condone the reverbed 808 clap as your snare on this beat with this sample. the beat sounds like it's screaming for a random crate snare. to my ears of course.

the mood- nice beat. i would like a crack at that sample the oohs are flyyyy.

i wonder- this is aight. the 808 clap worked better, but i still didn't love it.

love jones- nice snare, hot beat, nice song. hi hats were ehh to me tho.

good stuff bruh i'll check you next time.

42982, thanks man.

didn't i- 808 clap ruined it for me on this beat. i don't think 808 clap when i think of that song. i don't be feelin those 808 claps unless it fits perfectly tho. so you kinda hit a sore spot with me there... but w/o the clap it's an ok beat.

here we go again- now these are the kind of sounds that warrant an 808 clap in my book. the beat plods to me, but it reminds me of some bay area mob music. mixed with an eminem beat. so maybe fans of that stuff would black out to this.

my crew's official- sounds average and plain to these ears. the bassline is the best of the ones i heard so far... but that harpsichord/piano sound didn't do it for me. and that hornstab reminds me of no limit beats. which i wasn't so big on in their heyday. that don't sound like the soundtrack to a BX anthem to me cousin.

fly away- the piano i like. the rest is just bland to me man. sorry. the chick sounds like nina skye tho. nice.

money talks- not the beat i would pick to spit on.

i wish i had more positive shit to say, but i just wasn't moved. my advice: get you some more drum sounds and study some truly great music. i'd be happy to tell you some breaks that would beef up your drum palette significantly. what equipment do you use?? what kind of music do you listen to? your myspace says you're from philly, you have a serious legacy to add on to repping that city. from gamble and huff to the roots... these beats couldn't sit at that big boy table with the legends of Philadelphia.

but i'm a fan of that diggin in the crates type hip hop that doesn't move units tho. so my opinion is just one chamber of thought.

peace and keep at it

Damn man tell me what u really think haha.. Na haha it's all good tho at least u gave me your honest opinion, I appreciate that. But the thing is, I just listened to every beat u got on your page and I gotta tell ya that u are average at best homie. Your beats sound straight outta 1996 (not in a good way) and they're boring as hell man haha. No rapper I know would use these beats. So have fun scraping off the bottom of the underground..

Posted by Flasher, Mon Apr-27-09 06:16 PM
make beats that don't have preset 808 claps (that came with your free "my first beat making computer program") on every single one of them maybe i might give a fuck what you have to say. as of right now, your words hold the weight of a child's. because your beats reflect the experience of a child's.

1996 was a good year for beatmaking btw. much moreso than 2009.

have fun adding 808 claps to every single beat you ever do.
42839, Haha..
Posted by Brione, Tue Apr-28-09 12:03 PM
The funny thing is that on the one song that I used those claps (Didn't I) they are 909 claps not 808 u idiot. Shows how good ur ear is. Or maybe u don't know what the 909 is? Either way it doesn't matter cause I read ur comments to other people and it's clear that u came in this post with the intention of shitting on anything that didn't sound straight outta the underground with mad filters and shit.

Not that I feel I have to prove myself to u, but those songs u heard are unmastered mixes but they were recorded and mixed on pro-tools in one of the most well known studios in the BX NYC. I got rappers (real rappers that actually have songs out) from Philly and NYC hittin me up for beats everyday homie. Do u?

So here's the moral of this little conversation we're havin, it's all good that u have a strong opinion but there are ways of getting it out there without being an asshole. I hope u learned something..

i went back and listened to your stuff, your shit is incredible. you're right it was a 909. my bad. that was very creative how you thought to put the 80s drum machine clap with a famous oldie's sample... it's like you took it back to the future!! bananas. the rappers on your songs were crazy too. you dudes are gonna be mad famous. and rich! your keyboard playing skills are off the hook. you're like scott storch with the melodies. i was being too underground at first. now i get it. 5 stars!!

eternal- im scratchin my head. i like the snare... that main line is unorthodox... the whole beat is pretty unorthodox. i don't love it... but i kinda like it. it's weird but not in a bad way.

matterofact- i love the wah wah shit everytime so that's a plus. drums were hittin too. this beat is a victim of the no bassline syndrome tho.

kava- had some sickkk rhodes. drums were coo... another beat beggin for a bassline tho.

everything- not into this. if i was on acid and i heard this i'd have a bad trip.

lion mukhtar- two notes of bass and this beat is much hotter. i hear something bassy but it's not loud enough.

brother hayes- besides the vocal sample this didn't feel like an isaac hayes joint. decent beat tho. a bit repetitive.

anti-enthusiast- not my brand of malt liquor. i'm antienthusiastic anout this beat.

smashbots- interesting to say the least. i like the backwards wah wah shit. drums are fat too.

beatnights- nice drums and samples. loops of audiences clapping in a beat has never sounded bad in the history of rap music.

buddy melo- nice organ sample no homo. nice beat. not feelin your hi hats tho. the busy ones.

in conclusion, i can tell you studied dilla by your drums, now i'd say it's time you studied his basslines. i didn't barely even hear an 808 sub bass on these beats. do you use an MPC? or what kind of equipment are you using? maybe i can give you some pointers on bass techniques. it takes a little practice and it takes years to get them good, but having some nice bass on your beats makes all the difference in the world. plus it's the bottom of your mix and also basically the feet of your beat. without feet it ain't gonna move around the way it should.

anyway, keep on, i'll check you next time.
42806, much thanks for the feedback.......
Posted by jomac, Mon Apr-27-09 01:56 PM
i can tell you are heavy into basslines...and that's cool. I personally like to focus on particular sounds and different ways to change patterns with the drums when making music instead. Ha, I been this way for years...love altering drums.

As for studying sounds, thanks for the Dilla mention, but it's the likes of jazz artist or those who create thier own sound mostly or soley from jazz (still) that I'd like to give credit for most of my inspiration.

With a nod to Dilla (R.I.P), Pete Rock, and other inspiration, I'd like to leave the soulful basslines to their style of music. On occassion though, I might mess around with a bassline or make the the drums heavier to make up for the lack of using a bassline.

Again, thanskman for the feedback.

Jo.
42814, no doubt
Posted by Flasher, Mon Apr-27-09 06:25 PM
i can dig it. i meant no harm... it's just my opinion, my personal taste, beats with out some low end rumble sound unfinished to me. but it's just another nameless dude's worthless opinion. minus my bassline quibbles, i liked most of what i heard and you had some of the best and most interesting stuff out of what i heard so far in this thread.

after listening to your music, i can literally feel your philosophy towards beats. they're intentionally simplistic, and this can be a very good quality when executed right. the problem is your beats are stuck in slow motion; you have the atmosphere down (e.g. take me tomita) but they lack energy and the surprise element is missing. the soda's flat.

on the positive, i like the way you approach sampling. take private secretary dub, speed it up and make it more dynamic and i hear a very dope track. firestarter for example has a lot of potential, it could beat out a lot of current dnb/dubstep tracks if you sped it up and added some drops. also, i like the drum patterns on obscene. you use the same bass sounds too much, play with analogue synths and find something fat: iblit is free, and massive will melt your face

thanks again for the fb

Posted by Flasher, Tue Apr-28-09 02:52 AM
but the bass sounds i use always come from the song that i sample. i used the same 808 twice, but i don't use the same bass sounds on different beats.

Posted by cfinnerty, Tue Apr-28-09 10:44 AM

the may09 beat tape is f TIGHT-- really like the way you keep things moving, keep it from ever getting repetitive or boring. Drums are mostly simple but really effective-- well done & crunchy. I could listen to the whole 12 minutes easily-- I literally have no complaints. High high marks.

Subwoofer Science, a crew from the DC metropolitan area made up of Boom88, Ryan Lucas and myself, z1 thaESSENTIAL, have finally made available 6 trunk-rattlin' tracks of fresh material for your mp3 player or CD deck, whatever serves you best. We've yet to really define our sound but I can say that based on material and subject matter, our music caters to more mature audiences; those that can identify with having to keep a job and still struggling to find time to chase your dreams and all other related drama. We are a collective of artists and producers coming from different backgrounds and we've made a point of reflecting our various styles with this effort. This project represents a taste of what's to come in the near future as we continue to get together and make great music inspired by life.

We look forward to any feedback you might have on our material. If you like what you hear, please forward it on to others as you wish. We're definitely appreciative.

This is the 1st project of my own that I am putting out. It's 46 tracks deep. Instrumentals. It's kind of like a madlib beat konducta album, but it's far from a bite of that.

It's RAW and SOULFUL. Sample based production. Influences are Classic Soul, Funk, Jazz, Psychedelia, etc.

I posted it at MPC-Forums this is the reaction from them so far: http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=114619

If you guys wouldn't mind having a listen and maybe review it if you like that would be great!

If you like it feel free to pass along the links. I have no budget, and have no choice but to get it out word of mouth. It's Promo Only.

In response to post 57.

This is pretty cool. You got a lot of skill. On one hand it sounds like some futuristic stuff, on the other it sounds like an old school breakdancing break.

If you wouldn't mind checking out my work and posting some feedback I'd like that. The links to my free underground album are in my sig, and in a few posts up.

At first I didn't like this beat and thought it was boring. After the second listen I think its cool. The 'hook' is fantastic but I'm still not too hot on the verses. It feels like its supposed to build/switch up/vary but it doesn't. A good MC could bring that but I would still consider experimenting with the verses to make it more interesting on its own. It definitely has potential.
43134, the drum programming is a little stale.
Posted by theMantheMyth, Sun May-24-09 05:03 AM
that's the main thing that sticks out to me. making this beat a little more rhythmically interesting would go a long way.

still, i'm guessing this is one of your first beats, and it's a good start.

I'VE BEEN TRYIN FOR SO LONG HOW TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE A GOOD SAMPLE OUT OF THE WARRIORS THEME. Damn. Guess you beat me to it. I like the way you used Tony's Theme too. You definately got skills. People always hate on sampling, but all the best producers (Dre, Premo, Kanye, Pete Rock, Alc, Shadow) use it. It's much better than all the OVERPLAYED style all these guys are tryin to use on the radio shit right now.
43673, HAAAAAAAAAAAA @ Hov
Posted by Flasher, Tue Jul-14-09 07:50 PM
you my nigga. mufuckas don't even know about that shit. i love that real shit, i bleed this man. scarface and the warriors soundtracks are MY SHIT!!!! funny thing, the openeing theme that mobb used on that joint with nas is not on the scarface ost record. you know the one were they're wylin on the speedboats. and the creepy synths at the beginning of warriors, you know where they show the the ferris wheel and all that... i just knew i was gonna make some technotic hot shit with it... but the stupid fuckin bastards who pressed up the record failed to consider that perhaps someone would want to smoke a lil dust and hear that eerie shit...

i'm glad you caught that, you the first one to catch me.

peace dawg

edit- and you know the people who hate on sampling are the ones who don't have any crates. or they don't know how to flip samples and it scares them. or they have vaginas and they prefer to talk about things like nail polish and reality tv rather than which james brown records have snatchable drums. anyone who's anyone in hip hip production music making understands that sampling is what made the most incredible records our culture has witnessed. anyone who says sampling is bullshit holds no water to me. what kind of ignorant son of a bitch says that kind of shit in 2009 anyway?

it's been said many times over, but let some of these fuckers who hate try and make a hot beat with a crafty sample flip. 99% of them would destroy the drum machine in frustration. the other 1% would have their lives changed and become black booger dusty thumb crate stackin break choppin mufuckas.

43677, RE: HAAAAAAAAAAAA @ Hov

I didn't know it wasn't on there, but mobb sampled scarface twice. once on 'it's mine' w/ nas and on 'g.o.d. pt. III' off of i think that hell on earth album. rick ross used 'push it to the limit' and i'm pretty sure it was cam'ron who sampled 'rush rush.' Ever heard of this cd, 'Music Inspired by Scarface,' all rap stuff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Inspired_by_Scarface
and i think everyone's sampled that, "warriors, come out and play," thing. i like hearin old movies and stuff get sampled though.

43498, i like the concept of your mixtape
Posted by Flasher, Thu Jul-02-09 05:03 PM
since i know most of the samples i can appreciate the beats, but i think i'd enjoy the tracks as beats more than remixes... some of them, like the ms jackson and the corners joint particularly are synced awkwardly. it seems that you have some midichlorians after all.

i appreciate that you didn't put 808 claps and 16th note hi hats all over these beats.

may i suggest that you put these up with a couple more sequences and no acapellas, i for one would humbly like to hear em like that.
43500, RE: i like the concept of your mixtape
Posted by DJ Schwann, Thu Jul-02-09 05:51 PM
thanks for the feedback. i know, i had some trouble matchin up the acapellas. i figured you'd prolly know the samples, cuz the point of that cd i put together was making new beats out of the sample that the artist used in the first place. i will put up the instrumentals soon for you tho.
43502, RE: i like the concept of your mixtape

Here you go man. Thanks for checkin it out. And sorry, but I had already deleted the Ms. Jackson and Money Ain't A Thing files so I couldn't edit them to remove the acapellas. There's a Bone Thugs one though that I left off the original cuz I couldn't match it up at all.

43514, just as i suspected
Posted by Flasher, Sat Jul-04-09 09:30 AM
this shit sounds wayyyy better w/o the acapellas. man, i say just keep on doin the what you're doing, maybe add a couple a more sequences and take a few more samples or loops to add unexpected variations, step your drum game up and this shit could be certified hot. i'm a sucker for a funky sample so my opinion is biased but i think havin a fly loop is a lot better than no fly nothing and 27 layers of deluded amateur triton keyboardisms. i like the samples you use, i would like to stab at most of em myself.

especially the mccallum flip. i think if you woulda just put some well chosen drums on top of it, it's a done deal, i would rap on it myself. i might even steal that idea man i'm serious. i don't think anyone would bitch about you using the same sample dre used, i mean problemz and em used before he did anyway. lotta potential in that sample, axe is a gigantic titan of loopage and he gets jacked regularly, but i ain't ever got mad at an axe loop. unless it was the swizzy flip cos i was right about to fuck with it and then he went and soured the flavor for me... anyway put some drums on that, i can imagine the perfect drum kit right now...

43516, RE: just as i suspected
Posted by DJ Schwann, Sat Jul-04-09 04:39 PM
is there any set of drums i could download or something that you would recommend? idk too much about that stuff, i got a cd full of 808's downloaded, but they get a little repetitive at times. just wonderin.

go ahead and try that idea. i can't take too much credit for it. there was a mixtape by this dj called cookin soul where he remade the samples biggie used and had other artists rap over em, i just kinda stole that idea and ran in another direction with it.
43524, i get my drums off of records
Posted by Flasher, Sun Jul-05-09 07:00 AM
in my collection. somtimes i sample a whole drum kit from the same break, sometimes i get a kick from this one, a snare from that one and a shaker from that other one... sometimes i just listen to a record that i have just sampled for music and i'll search for single open drum hits until i have a whole kit. that technique actually works really good. sometimes i get on this hype where i want to sample drums that aren't exactly all the way open. that's probably my favorite because you have to be nice to get the extra notes out. i learned to do this from using the breaks on songs like sing a simple song and why can't people be colors too.

i don't know of any drums you could download. i'd say just go to any store with used vinyl and keep your ears peeled for open drum sounds. it's challenging to make drums this way but with practice you can get them to sound better. there's a million drum breaks that you can find out about tht have been sampled millions of times for very good reason, because they fuckin sound good. you know, impeach the president, funky presidnent, funky drummer, synthetic substitution, shit even billy jean has a perfectly fat drum break with high quality drums sounds. start out doing the knowledge on those and practice chopping them up and reprogamming them. fuck it, if you don't know too much loop em until you get tired of it and eventually you'll be ready to flip em right.

try different eq settings on different breaks, try experimenting with the decay on the drum hits so that sometimes you leave a little hissy dust air on your notes and soemtimes you compress the sound envelope to get a crisper more clipped type of note... and don't be scared to sample drums that you are certain came from a drum machine, they sound fat when you chop em.

above all tho, i can't stress this enough, if you want that official big league sound, you have to use vinyl, cds, tapes, all that shit doesn't sound as thick and crunchy as vinyl sampled drum breaks. those dr dre drums you sampled are him combing the crates for the textures he desires. you can even take a mic and clap into it, shake a jingle bell, even hit a snare drum and make crazy drums. i heard this one legend that one of dilla's sickerst snares (the source wouldn't say which one) but dilla mic himself hitting a fuckin raisin box.

smh. it can be done tho, you just have to be a crafty fucker.
43525, RE: i get my drums off of records
Posted by DJ Schwann, Sun Jul-05-09 10:00 AM
i gotcha. that's mostly what i've been doin, but it is a pretty tough way to do it. i have used the old stuff like impeach the president and funky drummer before, but i don't like doin that cuz it's like, everyone's done it. but thanks for the tip. and i read somewhere before that there's another dilla track where the drums are him beating on his chest.
43536, yeah it's tough
Posted by Flasher, Sun Jul-05-09 08:52 PM
it's no fuckin joke. but after years of doing it you'll start having drum kits that cats will be jealous of. that's how the real jedi masters of beat making do it. i used to live religiously by breaks that premier, pete rock, the beatnuts, diamond d, large pro et al had used in my favorite songs... pretty much the standards of break beatology. but i started digging in a junk type store where the vinyl was dirt cheap but unorganized with a lot of real cheesy music. i found so many breaks... my favorite is this electric light orchestra break that has the nastiest break that i've never heard anyone else use. i found breaks that no one else i know was aware of, and it got me into making drum kits with a snatch as i go approach. people talk about taking a snare from this song, a kick from that song and so forth but you really can get some of the best kits like that. i know if i was to make a kit around that loop, i would sample maybe 4 or 5 records to get the best samples i could com up with.

you can really mix and match different kicks and snares from different breaks to get the best textures for different beats. it's a matter of having the good taste and the patience to spend time on something that most consider a trivial detail. but in the end it's what seperates guys like dre and dilla from guys like lil jon and kanye. cos dre and dilla do it the hard way, but kanye samples their drums. i mentioned lil jon cos he uses that same got damn 808 clap on nearly every beat.

you know, i can't overstate the importance of equalizing the music you sample to accordingly alter the frequencies of the different parts of the drum kit... add some bass to the kick, cut the highs to take out the hi hat and the hiss, add some highs to make a snare brighter, same thing with hi hats. really you have to know when you need to add the right amount of eq and how much a sound would need for the beat you're doing. sometimes you don't have to eq the sounds at all. but i always put a little, even if it's just a little tweak to the highs on a snare or killing the high frequencies when i sample a kick. it takes practice and you have to be able to toss them and resample them if you don't get a good sound at first. i always do my drums last these days so that i don't get lazy and use the drums i already have just because they're available. sometimes it takes me a few hours to get the right feel, but i'm always glad that i take the time because it's like having the right shoes to go with the whole outfit.

some cats don't care about drums like that, but then again some cats rock sneakers they get for 20 bucks from big 5 sporting goods.
43688, i really liked your stuff

At first I was only listenin cuz I wanted to slam you down for the 'dudes ain't fuckin with me' thing (seriously tho, you're good but calm down a little), but for real, this is sick. Please check out my stuff, post 98, and go on youtube for the originals too, cuz the album on it's own is just remixes. I only did it cuz I figured ppl on youtube are more likely to click on 'kanye remix' then they are to click 'instrumental beat from guy you've never heard of.'

Posted by Flasher, Fri Jul-03-09 06:33 PM
just for the fuck of it i wrote this for my closest peoples and my parents. i always like it when people write a little story to go with the song, maybe it will help people appreciate my process more.

1. Flash Intro- I'd been wanting to sample the Theme of Flash Gordon (from the 1980 movie of the same name) for years ever since Kev pulled my coat towards it's existence. I like Queen pause, but the Theme from Flash Gordon is no Another One Bites the Dust. It's not even We Will Rock You. Bicycle? Anyway, I've touched the theme maybe 10 times before and I just never did anything worth saving with it. Every year or so I blow the dust off the Flash Gordon OST and give it a listen to see if I'm ready to make beats with any of the sounds on it. Most recently i listened to it again in mid june and I noticed there was an alternate version of the theme on side 2 of the record. It was more stripped down and subdued, and also it had these crazy synths with a dope wah wah effect in them. I kept on playing the song to see which parts i was going to chop, fell asleep, hooked it up the next day, tagged it with the Lazer and there you go. I layered 3 snares to make the monster snare hit, 2 of them are among my all time favorite drums to sample. One is from Sly, I'm gonna be chopping a lot of Sly drums in the immediate future.

2. Flashdance- A rather corny beat, I still don't love it. But Half was telling me about the Flashdance OST having a nice Giorgio Moroder Flash loop on it right at the begininng of the first song. I already knew the Flashdance OST has some cool open snaps on it so i took those and a bunch of other open drums i milked from various songs on the record and took the shakers from Beat It, Lazer tagged it, boom. Keydah liked it so I thought maybe it was decent. I think it needs some 808.

3. Zeesoo- Just a loop from a Vangelis record with my beloved Hall and Oates drums. I didn't know when I made it but Vangelis is the guy who did the Chariots of Fire joint. Apparantly he's an electronic music giant and he has all types of catalog to, er, refashion. I'm gonna buy all his records, Vangelis is crazy.

4. Pyroblyphics- I made a different version of this but I accidentaly saved over the floppy disc last year. I had the beat on a CD but the CD got scratched up so I'd been meaning to remake this for many months. This is sampled from a Moog cover of Night on Bald Mountain, one of my favorites ever. I sampled it on another beat and it sounds absolutely nothing like this one. There's at least one Dilla loop on this song. Anyway, I can usually remake a beat exactly the same to a tee when I lose them, but this time I couldn't. There were a few stabs I couldn't find and also the record I used for the snare came up missing after 3 thorough inventories of my record collection. To make up for the lost snare and stabs I put more sounds than the OG had and I think it came out a little more complete this time. The snare on this version is definitely nastier. But I still wish I had that damn missing record.

5. Taint- A straight forward flip of Tainted Love by Soft Cell, drums, all samples, everything came from Tainted Love. I had the 45 and heard the music and the drum break and I'd made a mental note to freak it and had been meaning to flip it, but I found a 12 inch 45 rpm single in the dollar crates with the extended version of Tainted Love on it that morphs into a cover Where did our Love Go (mental note chop where did our love go). A few months later I made this. It started out way different but I was messing around and made this one which is a lot better than my first dabble. I think it's a lot grimier than the Rihanna flip and also I made the homie say Ghetto! which is just funny. I like this beat.

6. Watch me- An interlude I made in front of Keydah during the first ever Labrat Beat Olympics. I sampled Somebody's Watching Me of course, I just tried to make something fresh real quick with it. I only included it because of the next beat...

7. Music Man (Olympian)- Humbly the crown jewel of the historical first ever Labrat Beat Olympics I sampled the corniest disco song I have ever touched with Keydah looking on. I was feeling cocky that day like I could make a beat out of anything and it would come out hot. The only thing the source song had going for it was an open bassline at the top. I dissected the bass line like a frog, stretched out a vocal sample or two, added a siren from a rick james record made to sound like a disco call (oooah oooah) as a joke re: the disco source material, added some nasty drunken drums and boom. Gold medal beat making.

8. Do or Die- A Kenny Loggins sample from a record produced by Bob James. I liked the sample a lot and one day I hooked it up. Like to hear it hear it go.

9. Papes Kung Fu- An old Jeru beat that I've tried to remake many times, this time I got the closest I'd ever gotten to the DJ Premier masterpiece. When I remake old beats now I call it Kung Fu (beet kune do!! word to bruce) cos I try to study the style the particular master used on the particular beat. Preem used a technique on this that I haven't named yet but I have used a theory similar in the past. Actually believe it or not, the Pyroblyphics beat uses a similar method for the bassline that Preem used on these Ahmad Jamal pianos. Infinite respect to Preem, I tried to do this chop for years but it wasn't until I played the sample note by note while cueing the record for the Jeru song that I was able to figure out how Preem did the second piano chop in his main loop. He killed it the way he stretched out an abstract burst of an Ahmad Jamal lick superpause into a beautiful melody, cats need to get up on that one.

10. Wife Scratcher- I made this April 20 09 with a from the vaults type Galt Macdermot record. My wife was irritated with it after hearing it on loop all day, so I called it Wife Scratcher. I think it's nasty, I hope you'd agree.

11. Dunny- Sampled from a Bill Cosby cover of Sunny on the Salvation Army Band record. He actually had the rhythym section from the Charles Wright 103rd St band on that album. Drums are from an old Barkays album. Full Donut mode on this one. I'm plan to rhyme on it soon.

12. Within My Life- I learned the technique I used on this from listening to Donuts. The thing about this beat is I love (worship?) the good Rev. Al Green and I fantasize about using Al Jackson drum sounds on Al Green beats but in my experience there aren't too many open Al Jackson breaks in the Hi Records catalog, which is tragic. But this beat comes from How Can You Mend a Broken Heart via Al Green and the classic Willie Mitchell sound. I don't know if Al Jackson or Howard Grimes drummed on the song, but the hi hats and snares are so nasty I didn't put any of my own drums on top of it. Plus I used every pad on the SP and I had no more room to make a drum kit. Anyway, I'm serious about my Hi Records drum sounds so I wanted them to shine through. I remember seeing Al Green in concert and being upset that the drums didn't sound how they do on the records. However they got those drum sounds on songs like Love and Happiness and I can't Stand the Rain is a mystery to me but I'd put them Hi on my list of all time favorite drums sounds ever. I mean, there's more than one song where the drums sound the way I'm talking about, it wasn't a random accident. The drums on those earlier records were a signature trademark of Hi Records like those incredible organs and that horn section.

I swear someone should give whoever was responsible for those drums a lifetime achievement award. The drummer and engineers. It's serious. Oh yeah, dig the time signature change in this beat and notice how I chopped around the singing in the original song. There was a part on the record that had no singing but I noticed that the bassline was better in the part w the singing so I challenged myself so the bass would be doper just for your listening pleasure. That shit was hard bee. Remake it and see for yourself.

13. Summertime- Another Al Green flip from the a cover of the standard. I been wanting to use this for a looooong time. So one day I came up with this. Sometimes a sample is so dope to me that I try to approach it with a lot of knowledge and respect and I end up intimidated of it and put it off for a long time until I'm ready to climb the mountain. I used what I like to call my 3=4 chop technique on this and the previous jawn. The 3=4 theory is basically what Dilla did on Donuts with Hi and Bye, he really messed up my head with that. I was having a lot of trouble sampling songs with odd time signatures around the time when Donuts dropped, and I was very impressed how he flipped those two beats. There was a beat on the Motown Beat Tape where he did the technique again and it kind of made the idea gel in my brain. I took that type of chop as a challenge from Dilla to all beat makers to develop that technique. It's simple enough but the 3=4 theory is a very deadly way to chop and resequence samples and I use it every single chance I get. People have flipped odd time signature samples before but I'd never heard it done like this before Dilla did it. Once again, thank you again Jay Dee.

14. Grhyme- This beat is crazy. I heard the sample and I was hypnotized, I had to hook it up the same night. Procol Harum, I got into them from listening to AM radio when I drove a taxi. I found the record in the crates with the song a lighter shade of pail in my head, dropped the needle, picked my jaw up off the ground and got to work. I had to do some tricks to get the drums to lock to the notes in the guitar sample and also to stretch the last note before the loop turns around. I never made anything quite like this before, but I can't wait to rhyme on it.

15. Grhyme outro- A fresh ass sample from a different song from the same record I used on the previous beat. 32 chops what son. I made a version that was transposed higher than this one, on a whim I pitched the whole thing lower because I thought the bass would sound better deeper. And it did! Hot damn.

43511, This is kinda weird but...
Posted by DJ Schwann, Sat Jul-04-09 12:03 AM
first beat I ever made, used that same al green sample as on 'within my life.' kinda weird. overall, your cd is pretty tight. prolly gonna burn it later. only song i didn't like was ghrhyme. i felt it sounded less like a hip hop beat and more like the background music for the boss level of an old school video game. but overall, good job. and yea, here's the first beat i made, sampling that same al green song as you did. i enjoyed the liner notes too.

43512, it ain't weird bruh
Posted by Flasher, Sat Jul-04-09 07:38 AM
aybodyannaygramamanem got that record. i don't recognize that piece you took but that snare sure sounds familiar. did you just use the snare in the loop?

and thanks for listening. i appreciate the honest positive feedback. the grhyme shit, i could see how it wouldn't resonate with folks. when i made it i wasn't sure if it was really next level dope or if i was just really stoned. if you heard it in the lab wth a head full of sweet stinky reefer i think you might see the glory of the grhyme. maybe if you heard rhymes it'll conect the dots.

anyway right on again potna. i won't talk big head shit in the july beat tape post.

peace
43517, now that you mention it
Posted by DJ Schwann, Sat Jul-04-09 04:44 PM
yea, al green is pretty well-known. nothin too obscure.
um, idk, like i said, first beat i ever did but i think at that time i sampled all the drums i used from the instrumentals of dr. dre's 2001 album. if not that then it was prolly a preset drum on the mpc500. i'll be lookin forward to july 09 beats. what do you use for your beats, just wonderin (mpc, frooty loops, etc.)? I use an mpc 500 (never use the presets anymore, almost all samples) and edit stuff in this program called Acoustica Mixcraft 4.
43522, i use the sp1200
Posted by Flasher, Sun Jul-05-09 06:38 AM
records, a plain old technic 1200, a numark dj mixer to eq the records. if some of the beats sound like they could use a couple more sounds or layers it's because i only have 10 seconds of sample time and i probably ran out.

Yo Wamoo,

You're pretty dope! Soul Acne and Snickers vs. Lakers are nice. Feedback-wise, I like the drum sounds a lot better on Soul Acne than the other joints. Don't over-compress your final mixes too much, cause it takes away from the bang of the beats. Overall, I would add some texture by having some elements with more reverb and leaving some elements super dry, so things stand out a bit more. More layers overall would take things to the next level.

Peace!

Haroon Al-Qahtani Presents: The Kraftwerk Über Mix

http://homepage.mac.com/alqahtani/.Public/web/kraftwerk.mp3

http://homepage.mac.com/alqahtani/.Public/web/kraftwerk.jpg

A 41 minute mix of songs from the most influential group of musicians in modern music, Germany's Kraftwerk (literally, power station). Their contributions laid the foundations for modern dance, pop, and hip-hop. While electronic instruments were used in music before the emergence of Düsseldorf's synthesized quartet, Kraftwerk mixed it with pop and rock sensibilities, making the niche genre easily accessible by the mainstream. The group was not without their eccentricities. Nearly 40 years after their debut album little is actually known about the group and visitors to their secretive Kling Klag studios are rarely welcomed.

Kraftwerk's philosophy of man versus machine in the creation of music would later be cited by Techno father Derrick May as an inspiration, and certainly affected the sound of Hip-Hop. Most notably "Trans Europe Express" and "Numbers" formed the basis of "Planet Rock;" "The Man Machine" has been sampled numerous times, from the Fearless 4 to MC Lyte, to Jay-Z.

It should also be noted that Kraftwerk's songs often contained subtle social messages as evidenced in "The Robots," "Radioactivity," "Computer World," and many others.

Tracklist:

1) Hello
2) Music Non Stop
3) Trans Europe Express
4) Boing Boom Tschak
5) The Robots
6) It's More Fun To Compute
7) Home Computer
8) Numbers
9) The Model
10) Computer World
11) Interlude
12) Showroom Dummies
13) Tour De France
14) Sex Object
15) Computer Love
16) Goodbye

Some very important tracks have been omitted such as "Radioactivity," "Autobahn," and "Man Machine" -- just to name a few.

I'm new here, been a producer for a number of years working in the Long Beach, Compton, LA area.

My styles run the gamut from Dilla-esque, to Preemo, to everything in between. I also make different genres and styles of music, from house, ambient to classical. I try to experiment with different sounds often incorporating prog rock (I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan) strings and pads with hard grimy hip hop drums.

I don't really like to sample, even tho I do it from time to time. I try to avoid it as much as possible, and I rarely use breaks.

Here's a beat somewhat inspired by Black Milk, coincidentally its titled "Leche."

Not new, nor old.... just something I uploaded for another forum and just happened to save the link.

Please feel free to comment and if you guys are interested in any other beats hit me up.

okay man, trying to give you a little feedback.
this is my first post :D so hi to everyone!
nice chopps you did with the sample, but the snare sound and the crash cymbal sounds a little bit plastic and not so soulful like the sample is. but the sample got and own nice character.
44086, My drums sound plastic? Cool! Thanks!

Looking for feedback on "Universal Timeless Force" : too much crazy eq shifting? All real instruments, so the mix is tough.

44416, Afrika Baby Bam - Beyond This World (Bruce Geetz Afro-Funk Remix)
Posted by TIMP, Thu Oct-22-09 06:44 PM
Check it out, I remixed this JB's joint off a 12inch I have. It only had Bam's verse on the record.

I flipped it on a West African highlife dance vibe. Used a bunch of different records for the samples.

The back story is in my blog along with a d/l link, or you can stream it on myspace (but I still think its dope to listen to along with the back story!)

Tell me what you think.
