4003, DILLA'S Illest drums.
Posted by sher-mighty, Sun Mar-12-06 12:33 AM
List your favourite songs produced by the man where the drums knock. Just your favourite drums.

I'll start with Busta's "Still Shining".

Absolutely SICK. The swing of the beat and busta's interaction with the rhythm is classic.

how can a simple pattern like that swing and knock so hard??
i love that song

Posted by Sileni, Mon Mar-13-06 07:15 PM
Although technically, they belong to Rene Costy and His Orchestra and even though Dilla chopped it up- he got the sample from a Madlib interlude.
But yeah, I'd choose that too.

"Fuck The Police"

Busta Rhymes - "Still Shinin" at least in how he matched the samples to it
"Shake It Down" (from Welcome 2 Detroit) - slow and sloppy. Classic Dilla.

Phat Kat - "Ain't Nobody Care About Us"

Fourtet - "Serious As Your Life Is" / Oh No - "Move Pt. 2" - same drumset, possibly J-Dilla's best drums ever, so he had to use them twice.

4216, peer pressure were some of the best.

Posted by Universal Truth Allah, Wed May-17-06 07:49 PM
those drums are part of the samples he took! which makes those drums no less dope, maybe even more impressive that he didn't add not one fucking hand clap or one hi hat and they still sound like something he would program. Dilla is the 7.
4408, Oh, forgot...
Posted by Afrolingo, Sun Mar-26-06 04:35 PM
T-Love's "When You're Older".
Soo damn dope. And bangin'...
Prolly one of the more unknown tracks of Jay Dee, but I think this 1 was around on them beat tapes. I guess...

Posted by Vocab, Fri May-19-06 01:21 AM
yes, we're talking about drums here... but that may be one of the best basslines on a soul record. ever. the slight delay, the way it stays riiiiiiight behind the drums. i'll use the word again. genius.

hmm... yet another Busta track. i remember someone said a while back that the drums "occupy their own sonic space" on that track. that pretty much says it all. it's like that kick's just... on its own shit. mixed as damn near perfect as you're ever gonna hear.

6440, Its hard for me to respond
Posted by dafriquan, Sun May-28-06 11:55 AM
since Dillas drums usually sound like perfection to me. I don't know how to explain this but y'all might understand. When I hear a Dilla drum track, I automatically feel, understand and appreciate what he was trying to do. And they tend to complement the sample/keys/bass perfectly. I almost shed a tear when I heard the drums from the Macy Gray "I try" remix (similat to Film Called Pimp drums). My man knew was so proud and confident of his drums that he let ir ride for the opening 8 bars or so...just the drums and the acapella. SICK.

i enjoy arguments. encourage them even. but there's ONE thing I refuse to argue. Dilla had the illest drums in the game. To argue would be contrarian for the sake of it.
