I like how the tension builds with the layered samples and then is alleviated only to get tense again. Real nice composition on this one.
20181, My dude...post your page up again in here;
Posted by InstruMental, Tue Jan-02-07 02:33 PM
I'm not gonna reup the old post, but I'll get on your joint since I didn't make it in time in the other.

20463, this was cool, would have been much cooler with a more defined bass line
Posted by Allah, Sat Jan-06-07 03:30 PM
or some more low end somewhere. I hear you trying to
make up for the bass line with the tuba or whatever low horn
and string sound in there.
If you didn't want a bass line, you could layer another lower
pitch kick underneith the kick you got in there, to kind of fill
it out more. Nice use of medieval horns and stuff.

Peace.

www.myspace.com/saymyname3000 for electronica-styled, hip-hop influenced beats. I'd recommend listening to the second track first and if you dig it you might like the first one.

And this file is a couple of my more hip-hop styled beats put together. Some are just loops and none of them are finished, but you get the idea.

20356, thats you "singing"?
Posted by haji rana pinya, Thu Jan-04-07 08:02 PM
interesting

not for me but thats like electroheavymetaltechno
20360, rethinking it...
Posted by haji rana pinya, Thu Jan-04-07 08:20 PM
it was one of the most interesting songs in this thread thus far

20367, RE: rethinking it...
Posted by Smegmatique, Thu Jan-04-07 11:19 PM
That's not me singing (except for that "choir" background in the bridge). The song is a remix of a track by White Flight, who you might like if you dig Beck or a beat-driven Animal Collective.

I appreciate the feedback. Many thanks.
20368, agreed
Posted by Aeon, Thu Jan-04-07 11:44 PM
20464, I could only hear the first one, it was wierd, but....
Posted by Allah, Sat Jan-06-07 03:35 PM
I heard the dnb elements in there later on in the track.
It just sounded real chaotic and wierd otherwise, with the
intro whining vocals, and the big 80's vocals later on in the
track.
20478, U trying to be Sleepy Brown's new producer? :-P
Posted by Allah, Sat Jan-06-07 04:38 PM
I hear that swing in there. The synth kind cuts into the
bass line a little, you might want to high pass that some more.
Also at some (NOT ALOT) of distortion to the bass line and
synth, to fill them out spectral wise. You have the midi
code for that synth part? You might want to tighten it up
just a little bit in some parts, its a little too "human"
if U C what I mean, but thats an artistic perrogative if U
want to keep it that way. Peace bruh.
20490, ooops this was meant for Prov, not U, pardon self

20671, The Condition rmx is def. a different spin on things...it works though
Posted by InstruMental, Tue Jan-09-07 07:30 PM
Even the parts that get more clubbish fit the lyrics well, and the hip-hop-oriented x-over is ill. That bass is a nicely placed element, IMO. There's a few points where some higher-end countermelodies/counterpoint don't do so well for me, esp. near the end; it starts sounding a bit much like 70s progressive rock timbrally, which I think is very, very easy to overdo. It's not wildly out or anything, just not really the direction I myself would have taken it.

like the idea, I would have gone for another drum-kit for a song like this - but that's a matter of taste i guess... The best part in the track is where everything blends together, the bass-line, the pads and the keys-solo.. love that!

sweet: love your drums on this one, nice rim! The melody is really eehrm, "sweet" I think would be the appropriate word :D. I would have worked some more on the piano-sound that plays the melody.. a little bit too cheesy for me.. But all in all a good track!

just the way i fell: well, what can I say, you probably already know this is great! The guitars panned in my right ear are sooo nice. And the voice is perfect. Good job flippin' the samples. Love it!

you got some good joints on there. Nice vinyl crackle on some.
Of the new joints, I could only hear CIA. It was smooth but that
Pharoah Sanderish pad in the back ground, it could use or more
smoother transition than just the cut off you did, but that cut
off would not be too noticable if there was somebody flowing over
it. Peace.

the kick on every beat makes it kind of "housey" which
I don't usually like housey/4 to the floor type joints,
but you had the snares in there to off set it a little.

Posted by Allah, Sat Jan-06-07 04:48 PM
The Aradical track, I didn't like how you mixed in the kick
drums, for a soul music kind of track that it's supposed to be....
Chip it down is BEGGING for a horn solo or vibraphone solo over
the top of it.

And these horn lineups are PFHPFAT.

I can't even think of anything at this point I would wanna hear different, really. If I dig hard, I may say that the kick ending each bar is *so* laid-back it threatens to jump the rail just a little bit. But even that is more dependent on how I'm listening than anything.

Now, Isekou throws down the phoneme-craft, but while y'all in the studio, this would be a great track to take advantage of some vocal arranging possibilities...and the possibilities would be endless.

some of those jazz sounds cut out to fast during or after some
of the snare hits. Makes it sound like some hesitation.
Introduction was more continuous, liked it more, but you
had some abrupt vocal samples there to. Investigate some very
limited verb or delays on those vocal samples.
20532, RE: introduction is cool, so is night, but for night....

y'all are no Ming and FS, but y'all got that funky white
jewish don't give a fuck laid back joints. I'm mad
reminiscent didn't have a real bassline really.
I liked the salsa joint the best, also the percussion (congas etc.)
could be really fleshed out by not having it repeat every 4 bars
with the same rhythm, use some adlib percussion in there somewhere.
I realized this is a finished product, just my observations.
Otherwise the Salsa joint is some great downtempo. Peace.
20528, yo thanks man
Posted by spacemanjf, Sun Jan-07-07 12:32 AM
as for that missing bassline, i purposely didn't add one because my man tony green (he wrote the basslines to every song on doggstyle (gin and juice!) and 2001) is laying down some live bass on both of these next week

and as for the congas, im gonna mix that up definitely. thanks again for the critique, much appriciated

dig the "atmospheric" vibe. i'm no jungle/DnB head, but i feel like if you had a faster tempo on some of the high keyboard/synth percussive sounds the track would have more energy and keep the attention longer...but i feel the downtempo vibe for sure with this piece.
20414, it's not jungle, it's dubstep (135-150 bpm)

It's like grime, only more deep, or more instrumental, than
with rhymes (like Dizzy Rascal, da Streets and dem).

it doesn't sound good. The beats though are smooth.

20513, RE: it doesn't take all week to clean up vocal placement and phrasing....
Posted by DurhamNCredible, Sat Jan-06-07 10:14 PM
That's what's good on the breakdown of my beats. As far as cutting the vocals samples and phrasing, Exhibit A: the Van Dross sample on "Other Side of the World" OR Sade on "This May Miss U". These were supposed to be unclean and abrupt. That technique was inspired by a track on Freddiie Foxxx's very slept on KONEXION cd. He got a piece called "Step Up" where his deejay does a live (and I admit clean) turntable rearrangment of Audio Two's famous verse, "Step up if yu wanna get hurt!" into "If yu step up, yu get hurt!" The idea is to rearrange the words of a well-known verse or sentence into a completely different sentence, verse or phrase, thereby creating new or ironic meaning. I mean, who knew Luther Van Dross was concerned about Bush frontin on the aircraft carrier? LOL... I dunno man, I just make a sincere effort to stay on some off-center ish. Experimentation with vocal samples is a pasttime within a pasttime for me.

What do mean by "changing the envelope"?

As for not taking all week to clean up vocals, I really do this off inspiration so sometimes I complete 3 songs in one day with fractions left over or sometimes it may take a month to finish constructing the core beat not to mention the bells and whistles.

"That's what's good" usually means "thanks" in Durham, NC. My response to your critique was not a rebuff, recoil, revulsion, ricochet, recalcitration, repulse, renitence, insurrection, remonstration, revolt or otherwise oppugnate opposition to your critique. Feel me? Squashed.

Two Hands Rough Mix: That's a ill sample! (it's not like BUT) it reminds me of that cut off Supreme Clientele where Rza looped a horn (or whatever it is) being snatched back then threw the beat under there. Yours is a little more sophisti but still complements the beat without upstaging it.

who is the God flowin' on the track? Great lazy
pad melodies synths and organs, simple but effective boom bap
on the Manifestations KQ Mix. Another day joint, same stylo.
Rainful Roots, ill intro with the grand piano and rain ambience
GREAT DOWNTEMPO/ACID JAZZ right there. Threw me for a loop,
tempo wise, on the Daydream and Vertigo joint. I see where
you tried to go with that, it's hard to catch what is supposed
to be the down beat at first, I mean it's almost some very stripped
down broken beat rhythym wise, or just that 60 bpm smokers
groove joint. The drums on that one are a little too "gritty" to
me but probably because the percussion isn't mixed that high in the
mix to releive the contrast with the grit on the kick and snares
at some parts.

Overall:

I want some vinyl next month my peoplez with some INSTRUMENTALS

to be honest it's not really my style of production, but the technicals are there, your shit is typically clean and sharp.

i dont like that buzzy synth that comes in on the 4th bar, it sounds kinda cheesy, but that's like my only knock against the compositional pieces.

i think some of the synth levels could come down but that's really nitpicking. this is well done. i really like the flanged (phased?) variations you add to the drums to give them some movement. something i'm trying to incorporate more myself.
21001, the drums, I'm just automating high and low pass filter cut off freq

something new I just made today.
20972, aight...
Posted by Aeon, Mon Jan-15-07 05:41 PM
this isnt bad at all.
i think you should really concentrate on 2 things-

variation

layering

i say variation, because except for maybe one section/bar where they dropped, the drums were pretty much the same. the synth didn't really match the vocals imo, the original sample kinda matched sadat's vox in that it was an airy sample, ethereal almost. fit right under sadat's reflective choice of words and imagery.. since you used this synth, i think maybe some sections where the synth stuters for like, a bar or two, drops out completely, or maybe both the drums and synth stutter together, would give the song a little more movement so it doesnt just plod along.

as for layering, i say that because the finished product as is kinda sparse. sometimes sparse is really good but sometimes it leaves a little or a lot to be desired. in this case it's just a little but there still feels like there could be something more. if you added another synth stab here or there, a simple string note being played over top the synth, a bass line, nothing fancy, maybe one note over the first and second kick in each loop of the drums, it would give the song alotta depth and make it more interesting, give sadat's words more oomph (because let's be honest, sadat didnt get very deep on us here, and left to their own devices, his lyrics are fairly ho-hum)

hi tek's beat carried him for all intents and purposes, and it's because it had enough going on to make his verse official.

20986, great breakdown

www.myspace.com/themagneto
20973, i like the way you used this sample!
Posted by Aeon, Mon Jan-15-07 05:46 PM
if this is your first time, this is great..
suggestions:

bassline if you could. nothing too fancy.. but i'm guessing that if this your first time sampling, you usually play stuff out?

if so, playing a bassline (if you have the tools to do so) would be a good look.

the drums seem kind of garish and sore thumbish, they dont really blend with the track imo.. some reverb to give them some wash would do good for them... and maybe a hat in there to kinda hold it all together. oh and the the drum loop gets tedious after a few turns, try dropping out a snare or a kick here or there, giving it some change.

sounds good though.
20979, RE: i like the way you used this sample!

21002, for something as sparse as this U might as well turn the kick up
Posted by Allah, Tue Jan-16-07 01:50 AM
meaning make the kick thump more, to give the track a low
end to balance the mid/high range flute stuff overall.
Also a kick with a long sustain too, and maybe dirtied up
a little bit with SOME (not alot) of distortion or overdrive.

Peace.
