I didn't read the book until after I saw the movie and I still picked up on everything I wrote.

Yes, and given his relationship with his dog we can infer that maybe there's not as much difference between humans and other animals as we would like to believe.

Which reminds me that even the vampires in the film kept their dogs on leashes.
