92782, Ugh. Blind Side got a Best Picture nod.
Posted by daveyoriginal, Tue Feb-02-10 08:47 AM
That wouldn't have happened with only 5 slots.
92783, Agree, and on the plus side, An Education, a really good movie, would
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Feb-02-10 08:55 AM
have also been shut out of the Best Picture race without those extra slots... it's a surprisingly fun movie that deserves to be seen...

92785, So would Up, A Serious Man, and District 9.

92788, I'm not even certain I saw 10 "great" movies this year.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-02-10 04:41 PM
Not that The Blind Side would've made my list, just saying.

I am glad The Blind Side made it over Invictus though.
92789, On that we can agree.
Posted by Ryan M, Tue Feb-02-10 04:59 PM
Personally, I'd have put Star Trek on there. It's nice more than 5 critical darlings are getting some shine, but we all know it really comes down to Avatar, Hurt Locker, and Inglourious Basterds. I really don't think anything else has a shot in the Picture race.
92790, exactly...good = good
Posted by Basaglia, Tue Feb-02-10 06:20 PM
92791, Fine, I'll say it: Star Trek was ROBBED of a Best Picture nomination
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Feb-02-10 09:02 AM
I ain't trying to hear it, there's no way that movie was inferior to The Blind Side, even if it was directed by that "hack" Abrams, written by Kurtzman and Orci, and had the "annoying" lens flares...

... and Rockwell got robbed for his performance in Moon as well

Posted by theprofessional, Tue Feb-02-10 09:35 AM
i know. it really is a shock to see it up there. rarely does the academy get one like D9 right.
92794, the academy could have just bought massive ad space for invictus
Posted by Basaglia, Tue Feb-02-10 09:02 AM
and had that shit showing in the lower third of the announcement. that would have been much more appropriate, shown more integrity.

they didn't actually have to GIVE that piece of shit nominations.
92795, Cosign. The worst of the nominated films by a mile.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-02-10 09:35 AM
And I don't mean Best Picture films... I mean any of the films nominated for anything.
92796, it was flawed on a number of levels
Posted by theprofessional, Tue Feb-02-10 10:39 PM
number one, the whole rugby story is like the 17th most interesting thing that's ever happened to nelson mandela. there are bigger and better stories within his own life to tell.

number two, the 30-minute rugby scene in act 3 brought whatever momentum the film had to a grinding halt. i mean, i love clint eastwood, but edit much?

clint eastwood, matt damon, morgan freeman, and nelson mandela are four of my favorite people in the world, but this just didn't come together. i'm glad it didn't get a nod.
92797, Yeah, it really was disappointing
Posted by ZooTown74, Wed Feb-03-10 03:08 AM
And of course my problem with the Big Rugby Game was that I couldn't understand what was going on; yeah, it's sort of a given that South Africa's going to win, but it would have been nice to get some kind of rundown of the rules and the scoring...

I love Mo Dogg, but his accent kept slipping, and there's just no way he was made up to resemble Nelson Mandela in any convincing fashion... and Matt Damon got nominated for the WRONG movie... the women were cute, however, so it had that going for it, but that's about it...

92798, the game went on way too long
Posted by theprofessional, Wed Feb-03-10 04:04 AM
especially considering, like you said, you already figure south africa's gonna win. also considering nothing was going on in or during the game other than the game. one team scores, the other team scores. so what? even in bad sports movies, there's usually something moving the narrative along during the big game. some teammates learn to get along or something. there was literally nothing going on for 30 minutes. it's like they cut away from the movie to show an entire rugby match. and the whole movie itself was like they cut away from the interesting parts of mandela's life (prison, politics, family, etc.) to focus on this rugby story.
92799, Clint Eastwood = Oscar noms
Posted by blue23, Tue Feb-02-10 11:36 AM
I don't know what it is but any piece of crap that he puts out whether as an actor or director is instantly nominated in multiple categories regardless of its quality. I don't get it...

92803, A few thoughts:
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Feb-02-10 09:25 AM
I'm glad "A Serious Man" got the best pic. and original screenplay nomination. I don't expect it (or really think it should) win either category, but I'm happy it got some love.

I'm also happy "In the Loop" got the screenplay nomination. I wasn't aware it was an adaptation. I'd love to see it win.

I'm a little sad that the homie Scott Neustadter didn't get a nomination for "500 Days." Ah well, he's getting a lot of work these days, and he may well be back.

Finally, I really need to get around to seeing "Hurt Locker" and "An Education."
92804, that original screenplay category is a beast though

92805, district 9, FTW!!!
Posted by theprofessional, Tue Feb-02-10 09:29 AM
really, REALLY glad to see district 9 get a best picture nod. it would have made my short list of five. i also think sharlto copley (main character in d9) should have gotten a best actor nod over george clooney playing george clooney. somebody above already said star trek got robbed. i haven't seen the blind side yet so i can't speak on that, but i do know up in the air is the most mediocre romantic comedy to catch fire during awards season in decades.
92806, (500) Days of Summer lost.

92808, You don't see enough movies, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-02-10 12:53 PM
That, or you pick your movies veeeeeery carefully.
92809, Man I seeTOO many movies ha...
Posted by blue23, Tue Feb-02-10 05:49 PM
That shit was just the worst to me. I can't even believe I made it all the way through. If i wasn't with my gf I probably would have left. Funny People was a close 2nd. But yeah, in general I avoid all the real trash = Old Dogs territory ha...
92810, Invictus was worse than (500) Days of Summer.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-02-10 06:59 PM
I might even say Inglourious Basterds was worse.

Not that I think (500) Days hung the moon or anything... I just think there were several worse movies, lol.

And I DID see Old Dogs.
92811, Invictus was a no go for me...
Posted by blue23, Wed Feb-03-10 09:35 AM
For many reasons. In no way shape or form do I think (500) Days was better than Inglorious Basterds. I pretty much can't stand Tarantino and I was really impressed by that film. Even based purely on scope and ambition. C'mon man tell me you are finding a way to stick up for the last 20mins of (500) Days. That park bench scene was the most contrived set-up maybe I've ever seen in a movie...
92812, i agree that 500 Days of Sumer was lame and overrated by a mile
Posted by dgonsh, Tue Feb-02-10 05:31 PM
that movie had 3 or 4 individual scenes that were well done and/or funny. the rest of the movie was cliche and sometimes just bad.

but to say it was the worst movie of the year is bringing the super hate.
92813, So, out of all the Pixar films, "Up" is the one that made it.
Posted by Nukkapedia, Tue Feb-02-10 09:35 AM

92817, and deservedly so
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Tue Feb-02-10 03:36 PM
that movie was terrific.
92818, it's pixar's best film since incredibles

I don't like having 10 best pic nominees, but it's nice that Up and District 9 got nom'd.

Acting ones aren't a surprise, I'll have to check out Julie and Julia though. People who saw it, did the GOAT get a nomination on name alone or is her performance really that good?
92822, she's always great, of course, but it's a wonderful performance

92824, nah, it's a great performance
Posted by theprofessional, Tue Feb-02-10 10:45 PM
meryl's problem is she makes it look too easy. anybody else would have been an oscar favorite off this performance. we shouldn't grade the GOAT on a curve.
92825, so the same actors get nominated on every single award show
Posted by rjc27, Tue Feb-02-10 09:40 AM
has it been the same 5 in each category on every show so far? I feel like their is usually a few differences... Does everyone really have the same exact opinion?
92826, Here were my predictions for the major categories. I did quite well.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-02-10 09:40 AM
http://thepasswordisswordfish.wordpress.com/2010/02/02/my-predictions-of-the-2010-oscar-nominations/

I'm SO pleased about the A Serious Man, District 9, and In The Loop nominations.

The only movies with multiple nods I haven't seen are The Messenger, The Last Station, and The White Ribbon. We haven't talked about these three much on the board... anyone care to chime in?

Harry Potter 6 getting a Cinematography nod is VERY deserved. Too bad it has zero shot with Avatar in the same category. Also deserved is District 9 for Best Visual Effects.

Biggest bullshit? No Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs for Best Animated Picture, (500) Days of Summer being shut out entirely, and though it was a longshot, no Matt Damon for The Informant!.
92827, Cloudy was likely crowded out because it's an out and out comedy
Posted by Nukkapedia, Tue Feb-02-10 10:47 AM
and we all know how the Academy loathes out and out comedies.
92828, Co-sign on Matt Damon for "The Informant!"
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Feb-02-10 11:06 AM
It MIGHT be my favorite performance of the year. Not necessarily the best, but possibly my favorite.
92829, i'm surprised matt damon didn't get more buzz for the informant
Posted by theprofessional, Tue Feb-02-10 10:50 PM
that movie just kind of disappeared. it was an oscar bait role for sure, but one with a performance that was actually worthy of some recognition.
92830, Best Animated Feature looks like a tough one

92831, I'm pleasantly surprised to see "The Secret of Kells" nominated.

First time in a while they've had two traditionally animated films nominated.
92832, I haven't seen a single best picture nom
Posted by Deebot, Tue Feb-02-10 10:13 AM
92833, cool @ The Messenger
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Tue Feb-02-10 10:15 AM
A nomination for Samantha Morton (say over Vera Farmiga) woulda been nice, but Woody's to-be-expected nom and the justice served in the best original screenplay category is great (look at the quality of those five films--strongest category?).

Good look @ In The Loop.

Matt Damon for The Informant was, I thought, one of my more realistic wishes. Bridges, Clooney, Firth, and Freeman were probably locks though, and I can't really be mad at the Jeremy Renner pick. Not one of the five strongest performances in my mind but not underserved either. (Was Anthony Mackie for supporting actor too unrealistic?)

Is conventional wisdom that Avatar wins every technical award it's nominated for?

Anyone see The Last Station? The trailer makes it look like it has a sense of humor. Accurate?

Now if Netflix will stop messing around and send me Inglourious Basterds, I'll be doing better on seeing what I need to see.
92834, i thought anthony mackie was the standout performance in hurt locker
Posted by theprofessional, Tue Feb-02-10 10:53 PM
i thought he was looking at some supporting actor buzz for sure, but everyone went with renner.
92835, anthony mackie WAS the standout performance in hurt locker
Posted by bwood, Tue Feb-02-10 11:47 PM
He's gonna get his due one day. If Hurt Locker wins he'll be in two best pictures.
92836, So who's going to win Best Song?
Posted by Nukkapedia, Tue Feb-02-10 10:23 AM
They nominated the lesser two of the four eligible Princess and the Frog songs ("Ma Belle Evangeline" is my favorite song, movie or otherwise, period of 2009, and I liked Ne-Yo's end credits song), and I'm not familiar with the other three nominees.
92837, I'm picking The Weary Kind, and I'm saying it's a lock.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-02-10 10:40 AM
It's a terrific song, holds a LOT of weight in the film, and it's got that T-Bone Burnett magic touch.

Mech
92841, I did do a bit of a double take myself, since i had a few issues

with the editing when I saw the film.

just curious.
92843, editing is a wee bit jumpy in some places
Posted by Nukkapedia, Thu Feb-18-10 04:39 PM
The worst I saw was the scene where Precious first comes to the school nad meets Cornrows.

The editing overall is acceptable, but it wasn't really anything I'd consider Oscar worthy.
92844, Bad year for using up those extra slots

92846, Me complaining about Oscar noms is an annual tradition but...
Posted by blue23, Tue Feb-02-10 11:41 AM
honestly this is the worst list of nominees I can remember. No agenda push, no exaggeration. This is just not a good year for film and awards season has only made that more apparent.
92847, While it's not a good year for films, I can't beef with most choices.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-02-10 11:57 AM
I'd say in ranking the best of each category I saw this year, I see a large number of my list on this list.

I agree that I saw very very few 4-star films this year.
92848, I think it's been a good year for films with award noms being
Posted by Sponge, Tue Feb-02-10 12:25 PM
underwhelming.
92849, Well, I saw many 3 to 3.5 star films... but few 4s.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-02-10 12:52 PM
That's why I call it underwhelming, since I can't really describe it as anything more glowing than solid. When 4 or 5 of the best 15 films I saw this year were animated, that (a) speaks strongly about the advancement of animation's storytelling prowess by more than just the usual suspects, and (b) speaks not as strongly of the live-action cinema 2009 had to offer.

What would your 4-star films have been this year?
92850, RE: Well, I saw many 3 to 3.5 star films... but few 4s.
Posted by Sponge, Tue Feb-02-10 02:58 PM
>What would your 4-star films have been this year?

The films I loved that I saw in 2009 are ineligible - 35 Shots of Rum; The Secret of the Grain; Revanche; Still Walking; Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go; Wendy and Lucy; Sugar; Me and Orson Welles. I'd call of them great except for Me and Orson Welles. 2 great films that I can't say that I love are Hunger and Munyurangabo.

Even taking those out of the picture, I'd still call 2009 a good year because I think there was a bunch of good films.
92851, Agree w/Sponge
Posted by blue23, Tue Feb-02-10 05:57 PM

>The films I loved that I saw in 2009 are ineligible - 35 Shots
>of Rum;
Revanche;
Sugar;

For me I'd add Gomorrah and Summer Hours. Where the Wild Things was also up there for me and that got zero love anywhere in any category. I figured at least Karen O would win something...
92852, Biggest surprise (in a bad way) was only 1 nom for Bright Star
Posted by Sponge, Tue Feb-02-10 12:20 PM
With all the noms The Piano got in 94, I figured a return by the same director to a period piece, which the Academy likes, would have garnered more nods. Maybe with a bigger distributor things would've been different. (Who makes awards marketing decisions - the distributor or production company?) A shame for Abbie Cornish who gave a great performance. I would swap either An Education for Bright Star for Best Pic, Mulligan for Cornish for Actress, and Nine for Bright Star for art direction. This year would've been great for voters to play politics having 2 female directors up for Best Director and 3 films by women directors up for Best Pic.

Second biggest surprise is An Education's You've Got Me Wrapped Around Your Little Finger not getting nominated.

Biggest acting snub since, off the top, Jeff Bridges for Door in the Floor that had no shot is Tilda Swinton's lead performance in Julia.
92853, Tilda in Julia = a trainwreck

I feel it lessens the prestige of being nominated for best picture when you now share that distinction with films like The Blind Side. And now animated films will get pity nods instead of deserved ones.

92874, I'm not well positioned to judge
Posted by chief1284, Tue Feb-02-10 05:46 PM
Given I haven't seen a number of them, but I agree:

Avatar

Stupid action film, but enjoyable. In a good year wouldn't be considered, this year I think it's a banker.

The Blind Side

Not seen

District 9

I enjoyed it in a "it's different" kind of way. But parts were terrible, and overall it shouldn't even be on a top 50.

An Education

Boring

The Hurt Locker

Perhaps the most overrated movie of the past 10 years.

Inglourious Basterds

Fun. Not a usual Oscar nominee, but I can accept.

Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire

Not seen

A Serious Man

Fairly indie for Oscars, but pretty good.

Up

Not even close to Pixar's best.

Up in the Air

Not seen.

Ok I've missed quite a bit, but it's not exactly awe-inspiring. Not one of them am I considering for my best of 00's list.
92875, the oscar buzz the hangover was getting scared me a lot
Posted by theprofessional, Tue Feb-02-10 11:26 PM
cause that might have wiped out, like, the next 100 years of the academy's credibility (if crash didn't do it already). i still think extending the list to 10 is too many and they should've just focused on getting the 5 right, but i'm not mad at the list they chose this year. at some point though, a hangover-caliber movie is gonna sneak through, at which point they'll cut the nominations for the next year down to 7.
92876, Im gonna say it. Goodbye Solo & Patton Oswalt were robbed.
Posted by dgonsh, Tue Feb-02-10 05:35 PM
Red West and Souleymane Sy Savane were two of my favourite actors of 2009 for their respective roles in this beautiful film.

White Ribbon got nominated for best foreign. Nice! I'm rooting for that big time (although haven't seen A Prophet yet). Didn't expect that at all, and fully deserved. Actually that's about the only nomination I strongly support.

Edit: No it isn't. Il Divo for best makeup! Didn't notice anything about the makeup, just wanna see the film get some props. In fact I can't believe it wasn't nominated for best foreign as well.
92888, Support for White Ribbon rescinded!
Posted by chief1284, Thu Feb-04-10 06:31 AM
Saw A Prophet last night, holy shit! That was one of the best films I've seen for YEARS. Wait I'm gonna make a whole thread for it. But I'd say it should be a shoe in for best international. In fact it's a real shame the Oscar judges are such dicks and are too scared to put foreign language films in the running. This is good enough for best picture.
92889, It's also interesting that Mo'Nique didn't play the "Hollywood game"

Posted by blue23, Wed Feb-03-10 09:39 AM
I agree. Minus Brad Pitt's embarrassment of a performance this is QT's best film (outside of True Romance which he only wrote). All of his ultra-annoying quirks are subtracted and you just get pure cinema. Some of those scenes (opening, bar) are HOF-ers. And as a screenwriter you can tell that he spent ALOT of time with this script to come up with all of those details. Very well written and thought out.

Posted by theprofessional, Tue Feb-02-10 11:53 PM
if your movie hasn't been at least somewhat widely seen, there's a really good chance it wasn't the year's best picture. sometimes the academy unearths some gems that audiences overlooked, but more often than not we just get mediocre oscar bait like 'an education' that nobody's seen and for a good reason. what i'm saying is that there's a reason hurt locker only made $12 mil its entire run. it never found an audience because it's not the best picture of the year.

92908, best picture nominees ranked by box office
Posted by theprofessional, Wed Feb-03-10 12:20 AM
this is a spinoff of post #109 ("if your movie hasn't been at least somewhat widely seen, there's a really good chance it wasn't the year's best picture"). i think any movie that can't make $25 mil in its entire run should be looked at by the academy with extreme prejudice, barring extenuating circumstances (very late or very limited release, very niche subject matter, etc).

by the way, the last best picture winner to make less than $50 million was the last emperor in 1987 ($43.9 mil). before that, it was the deer hunter in 1978 ($49.0 mil). the point of this post is that the hurt locker is not the best picture of the year and an education is just wasting a spot.

1. Avatar - $598.5 million
2. Up - $293.0 million
3. The Blind Side - $238.1 million
4. Inglourious Basterds - $120.5 million
5. District 9 - $115.6 million
6. Up in the Air - $73.5 million
7. Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire - $45.5 million
8. The Hurt Locker - $12.6 million
9. A Serious Man - $9.2 million
10. An Education - $8.8 million
92909, That's a great point, however...
Posted by Ryan M, Wed Feb-03-10 12:33 AM
In the post-Crash world, I think screeners are going to dictate a winner more than ever before (screeners + internet hype = Academy momentum and then likely box office).

Slumdog Millionaire wasn't a huge hit before it starting picking up SERIOUS steam (IIRC), and Crash did okay but not until it picked up a lot of buzz with the genius campaign of waiting until it was on DVD to send it out to voters (something IB did this year...reducing cost yet still getting as much voting traction).

I think it's a 3 way race, and Avatar is leading right now.
92910, His point helps support my theory that Up In The Air ain't out of it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Feb-03-10 12:44 AM
It would take anti-Avatar backlash, little-movie backlash, and QT backlash for it to win... but it's made 75 million, has a star in it, is about timely subject matter, and has the slimmest of outside chances to sneak up.

Plus, with 10 nominees and a somewhat new system of how people will vote this time around, we're all basically pissing in the wind trying to figure this one out this year.
92911, Yeah, but as much as I enjoyed UITA...
Posted by Ryan M, Wed Feb-03-10 01:05 AM
...has it won ANYTHING yet?

It won screenplay and score at one or two of the mid-major award shows. It's a fun film, but it's almost head scratching how many noms it's gotten.
92912, I'd say "Up in the Air"; is positioned thrid right now
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Feb-03-10 12:13 PM
Behind Avatar and Hurt Locker. If those two split the votes enough, and there's a big enough Cameron-backlash, it has a chnace of winning.

I did like Avatar better though. Haven't seen "Hurt Locker" yet.
92913, i think inglourious is ahead of up in the air
Posted by theprofessional, Thu Feb-04-10 03:44 AM
the SAG win for the cast, plus one for waltz, suggests that the actors guild (largest oscar voting bloc) liked it more than UITA.

92922, I just wanna mention a few movies. Feel free to add on with more.
Posted by agentB, Wed Feb-03-10 10:06 AM
1.) Amelia - LOL...that shit looked like undeniable Oscar fare when the trailer came out. Several months later, it's fallen off the face of the Earth. Hilary Swank looked a lil too cartoonish, which is always a risk with biopics. Ewan McGregor is slowly becoming a pox on your project.

2.) Nine - I also thought this was a sure bet for an Oscar nod pre-release. Daniel Day, Kidman, Dench, Cruz...and a musical? I haven't seen it, but I wonder what happened there. Maybe one of y'all can fill me in.

3.) 9 - I haven't seen this one either, but it was getting metioned in the same breath as Wall-E. Then no best animated nod.

4.) The Time Traveler's Wife - I might be on an island with this one, but it was one of the best movies I've seen this last Oscars cycle. In past years, I wouldn't consider it the kinda movie that the academy would cosign. But given some of the noms this year in best picture category, I don't see how those were better films than this one. Eric Bana put together a very solid year, IMO. This, Star Trek, and his role in Funny People...all memorable appearances. I feel like there's a GREAT role floating around out there for him that he'll meet up with soon.

5.) Moon - If you didn't think that was one of the best performances of the year, male or female, I don't know what to tell you.
92923, 9 was alright, awesome animation with a story that was lacking.

I think maybe he already got it with Chopper. He saved the last 1/2 hour from Funny People becoming completely unbearable but I didn't think he was that great in Star Trek.
