Jackie Chan Joins The Karate Kid Remake

Jackie Chan is in final negotiations to join the Columbia Pictures remake of The Karate Kid.

Harald Zwart will direct the film, which has been revamped as a starring vehicle for Jaden Smith.

Set in an exotic Asian locale, the new film will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth (Smith) learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor (Chan).

Chris Murphy wrote the screenplay. The film will shoot early this summer in Beijing.

I just don't understand why they're even calling it "The Karate Kid" when in no way is this really going to be a remake of The Karate Kid.

I loved 'Karate Kid' more than any human being

ie why get someone to play that ethnicity when there are a ton of people from that ethnicity who are just as qualified to play that role
This is especially a sore point when people of colour are replaced by white folk, because of the historical denial of our representation in popular culture
So I guess one way to see the Karate Kid casting is that Daniel being black is progressive in this light, while there's no need to mess with Mr Miyagi's ethnicity
(I personally don't think it's all that problematic since they're probably casting Jackie because he's a unique persona)

THE FUCKING MOVIE IS CALLED 'KARATE KID' and is a
RE-VAMP OF AN OLD MOVIE, FEATURING THE SON OF THE

Firstly, I've indicated that I'm actually empathetic with your position, because I think that Jackie brings something to the table that no one else can bring. I've said that
However, I also think that people who are giving this the eyebrow have more than enough reason to do so, given what I've outlined above
(In other words, I'm not on a mission to dismantle your argument, I'm just trying to introduce some context)

Like you've said, it's supposed to be a blockbuster movie, so star power and money making potential are clearly considerations. That's fine. What's not fine is when decision makers can repeatedly dismiss concerns about racial issues in casting behind the 'money making' argument. If we accept this argument, we also accept (amongst other things) that there will always be a lack of representation of people of colour in feature roles that aren't stereotypical. Sure, it's not just to recast an Asian-American story with mostly white actors (the film '21'), but it sure as hell would sell better, so sorry, you're out of luck. At least your story is being told right? Everyone wins

Regarding the idea that casting Chinese as Japanese could be considered progressive, I'm not sure this holds much weight considering that we're talking specifically about the history of screen representation
ie white has historically been cast favourably over black, but I don't know if the same can be said of Japanese over Chinese

The guy directed One Night at McCool's. The movie won't suck because of Jaden, nor because of Jackie. I've seen remakes I've dug.

but some movies are really wonderful because of the moment, the setting, the time, the chemistry between actors/characters, a whole lot of je ne sais que that really can't be formulated.

on a related note: my biggest issue with nostalgia remakes these days is they use the story/concept/plot and "update" it, thus leaving out the all the nostalgia

c) Like I said in the other post -- the new Daniel is far
better than the old. Ralph Macchio was actually a terrible
protoganist. The protagonist doesn't have to be a fucking
nerd herb ass nigga for the story to work. The protagonist
can be a cool, athletic kid.


The fact that Daniel is YOUNGER is better too, since it
will be more of a coming of age story...Jaden don't really know
his physical limits like that. Its more realistic since you
see greater growth when you teach martial arts to younger
kids anyway. Far more realistic. Far, far, more.



d) The actual fight scenes, visually, will be about
5,0000 times better. I don't care. They'll be better.

Daniel was the new kid. His mom moved them because of a job opportunity. It's pretty much the same story except the races and location has changed. Also, the trailer shows that there will probably be the same irrelevant family shit in it.

Jackie Chan is definitely a step up, I like that the choreography will be better (although without the original Karate Kid's success, this one doesn't get the budget it got).

It looks good but I don't see the need to shit on the original.

A new kid from the UNITED STATES moving to CHINA is not
just a location change. Its a cultural shift. US-China are
already lightweight beefing politically, and there's plenty
of reasons that bad kids from China would beef with an
American kid. And he African-American, which means people don't
really have a positive image of him like that, which has been my
experience every time I go everywhere, really(not that China
has this problem any worse than anywhere else....hell, AFRICANS
done asked me more ignorant shit than Asians have on my
travels)

So nice way to try and gloss over the differences.
