Truly influential: You can't disagree with this. You've complained that the film has continued to influence filmmakers so obviously it has connected to a lot of people in the film industry and since there's been so much overanalysis on the web, it's also connected to many film fans as well.
Thought-provoking: I can't agree with this. Zeitgeist is an overstatement unless the argument is that the spiritual and cultural mood of the 90's was superficial (which one could make, I guess, but then it wouldn't be a compliment). Still, I agree with you that claiming that this film was thought-provoking is giving it more credit that it deserves.
To me, you two are the extremes: people who love it too much and raise it above the level of pulp fiction and people who hate it for reasons other than the actual film itself.
