91684, Yeah, you're either blind or in denial Posted by Orbit_Established, Sun Apr-20-08 06:40 PM
>I just thought it was accepted as a popular, cool, >witty, ultra-violent gangster-flick with semi-original time >shifts and unconventional structuring.
Right, but none of the above warrant it being labeled an all-time great film, which it is, routinely.
What you described would make it a really fun B-movie.
I mean, 'The Last Boyscout' was a clever, fun, exciting film with dialogue at least as catchy as 'Pulp Fiction'.
People don't revere it the same.
'The Last Boyscout' is considered a fun B movie, at best.
People revere 'Pulp Fiction' as one of the best films of our time.
Its because 'Pulp Fiction' is supposed to much deeper and is supposed to be the product of deep thought and sophistication.
The sad truth was that it was not. At all.
It had about as much thought put into it as 'The Last Boyscout'(less, imo).
It's no Fellini flick >or nothing. It's not the Seventh Seal. Shit, it ain't even >something like Clockwork Orange or Blade Runner in terms of >heavy-handed symbolism.
Yep.
>Besides the whole briefcase Mcguffin, Pulp Ficition ain't deep >AT ALL. After all, it's Pulp Ficiton. Light entertainment. >Tarantino ain't a deep film-maker. He doesn't use symbolism >like a Kubrick or a Lynch would.
Right, he made a decent B-movie at best.
>I'm really surprised people see it like that. If you don't >like the film first time, I'd imagine it just ain't your thing >- not a case of you missing something or it being >misunderwstood. The film isn't that layered. The structure and >dialogue are the most standout elements to that flick - both >GREAT, by the way, hence the reputation Pulp Ficiton has >gained.
No, because 'The Last Boyscout' has not accumulated the same praise, nor following. It had excellent dialogue, great performances, fun action, clever little storyline.
You're describing 'Pulp Fiction' the same way. Problem is that isn't how people hold 'Pulp Fiction'. People think its BRILLIANT. Not just "fun." But BRILLIANT.
And that's my point: Its NOT fucking BRILLIANT.
At BEST, and that's when I am in a REALLY GOOD MOOD, I can say its "simple, wacky, fun."
And that being the case, I put it somewhere below "The Last Boyscout" and films of that ilk.
B-movie at best.
