you do enough crossover between tastes within your circle of friends / acquaintances, and there's always going to be huge differences. doesn't really make them smarter or dumber.

a film junkie might judge self-worth based on a DVD collection. a food snob thinks the film guy is an idiot because Applebee's is his favorite restaurant. music man thinks they're both narrow-minded because they only listen to rap. and so on.
