I'll go first, since this was my idea.

My collection is small, and yet it owns you. How can this be?

Four Rooms, Beetlejuice, The Doors? You know you can give gag gifts back.

No, but the widescreen was unavailable on DeepDiscountDVD.com.

>Four Rooms,

Dig it. Well, the 2nd half.

>Beetlejuice,

You shut your everloving mouth.

>The Doors?

It was $5. I had a $5 giftcard to Blockbuster, and I had Netflix at the time. Nuff said.

By the way, I apparently suck at replying to the general thread.
60949, Your Brazil Criterion edition is NONanamorphic! HAHAHAHAHA

They're re-releasing it in a month with the anamorphic transfer. You'll have to....

....

....

....buy it again! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, a second time spending those high Criterion DVD costs! OOOOOOOOH IT WILL HURT MY FRIEND! IT WILL HURT!!!

Also, nice Hitchcock DVD set. Too bad yours doesn't come in a velvet box like mine does. (BURN!)

Finally, I don't think I need to mention Most Valuable Primate. So I won't.

Posted by DarkStar, Wed Aug-16-06 07:09 PM
60961, Ha. Couple things.
Posted by CMcMurtry, Wed Aug-16-06 07:13 PM
1) 75% of them are used. I know a spot locally that sells used DVDs for dirt cheap prices. You can buy 5 for $20, so I usually scoop up whatever.

2) I bought two people's entire collections, each like 300. One back in 2000 when I first started collecting and one two years ago when DVD-R prices went way down and a co-worker burned all his and sold me his collection.
60962, Oh, yeah--I can't include my bootlegs, so...
Posted by DarkStar, Wed Aug-16-06 07:19 PM
...you add my Zappa and P/Funk concert boots, that's a little more.

"I know a spot locally that sells used DVDs for dirt cheap prices. You can buy 5 for $20, so I usually scoop up whatever."

There's only one obscure-DVD store in all of Memphis. RENTAL ONLY. Bastard. I bet he asks for hundreds for an unopened "Pink Lady and Jeff" DVD on ebAY. Dude is really slowing down the movement.

http://www.blacklodgevideo.net
60963, Nah I don't mean my bootlegs
Posted by CMcMurtry, Wed Aug-16-06 07:22 PM
Whatever DVD-Rs I have aren't on there. That story meant that when the dude bought a DVD-burner, he sold the real copies of all his stuff to me.

>There's only one obscure-DVD store in all of Memphis.

I'm sure there are more, just don't know about them.

Also, I forgot that I get DVDs from a certain Canadian company, who distributes Miramax, New Line, and a bunch of foreign flicks for free.
60964, No. There is ONLY Black Lodge.

I'm sure there are spots that sell stuff from major studios at a great price.

I go to a local joint called Spin Street here in town.

http://www.spinstreet.com

And would you believe that THIS is where I found my copy of "Supervixens"? You have to see the place to really feel what I'm saying.

Other than that, it's Amazon--various DVD-R sites--no eBay, though.

I'm limited here in Memphis, but I do what I can to make each purchase count towards the "theme" of my collection.

"Man, I just got a paycheck. I think I'll go buy more copies of LAGUNA BEEEEACH! IT'S SO FAAAAABULOUSSSSSSS!"

"Should I watch Murder By Numbers tonight as I sit alone in my igloo made of DVDs?"

I'll say this for my twenty-three (?) little DVD's--there's a THEME. Can you SEE it?

I'm trying to concentrate on rock musicals, sexploitation, grindhouse and drive-in stuff...and weird/obscure TV shows.

I'd have a LOT more if they didn't have this thing called "rent." And more than that if I made a little more money. So I try to make it count whenever I get a new one.

Mm-MM-mmmm.

Maybe it's because I haven't bumped into anyone who appreciates my tastes in a long time? I can't really screen a lot of my stuff with my family or friends.

I miss being able to screen my Russ Meyer movies and have them appreciated, instead of deconstructed by armchair feminists and people who want a "Little Man" sequel. It's hard down here for a pimp.

Lost:

My entire Russ Meyer "Vixen" series, on a Greyhound bus back from Canada.

Holy grail(s):

One of them is "FM."
And Amazon dealers want above $100 for it. I just can't rationalize that into a smart investment, but DAMMIT. I want that movie.

Another is only on VHS--the forgotten Chevy Chase film "Under the Rainbow." Saw it at the theatre--Skinemax used to show it constantly in the eighties. Would a DVD release draw the ire of little people in today's "let's-get-back-to-being-politically-incorrect" America? Dunno.

No, as I recall, the "censored version" is the only option on DVDaf. To my knowledge, my copy isn't censored, but I haven't actually watched it yet.

I got a really good deal on it at DDD. It was cheaper than buying all the seasons separately. And it has beautiful packaging - pink suede with a clear lucite "slipcover."

L's for "The Kid" ("The Kid," sir???) and "The Island" (switch that shit out for boxset one of "The Prisoner").
61056, I just copped it two weeks ago alongside The Pianist.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Aug-17-06 10:00 AM
I got the two of them for 10 bucks on eBay, brand new each. :)

As for my "L"s, The Kid I maintain is a good kids movie. I don't think Bruce Willis has been that funny and charming since the Die Hards, nowadays he's always the serious guy. Plus, there's something about that Spencer Breslin kid that makes me laugh. He was the new Jonathan Lipnicki in that movie.

And The Island I defended pretty loyally on here. I got both The Kid and The Island as the 4th movie in a Blockbuster "4 for $20" deal, and I'm pretty happy about owning both of them. I got a pretty damn good kids movie, and an action movie that I personally think is one of Michael Bay's better outings. Sure, it's ridiculous, but it was a shitload of fun.

61058, Deuce Bigalow IS a funny movie.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Aug-17-06 09:57 AM
The rest of Rob Schneider's movies suck, but every snob who I've shown Deuce Bigalow too has ended up admitting it's funny. However, it's true that I got it in the bargain bin.

And Good Burger is a Top 5 live action kids movie of all TIME. Yes, I said it.
