59291, Powerful insider info concerning Hulk and The Happening & More
Posted by Basaglia, Fri May-30-08 09:16 PM

so, i have a PR friend and she broke down the word on some of the summa's movies, as follows:

Hulk: AWFUL!!! BOMB!!! she said universal is scared as hell. and don't expect norton to promote it very much, because he's embarrassed by it.

M. Night's Latest Masterpiece: Contrary to web reports, NO ONE HAS FUCKING SEEN IT! Fox won't screen it for any media and it's on complete lockdown. she would only say it's scary as fuck.

The Rocker: SLEEPER HIT!!!

Dave: another L for Eddie.

P-apple Express: Hot Fiya...extremely funny. franco becomes big comedic star.

59292, Least suprising...

>Hulk: AWFUL!!! BOMB!!! she said universal is scared as hell.
>and don't expect norton to promote it very much, because he's
>embarrassed by it.

Every trailer they've released looks looks crappy. Part of me feels like Iron Man will be an anomaly for Marvel Studios. They care more about making release dates than making good movies.
59293, I didn't think Hulk was going to be any good either.
Posted by ansomble, Fri May-30-08 09:58 PM
I'm still going to go see it for myself but all the trailers look lame.
59294, Shit, some of the clips of the Abomination/Hulk fight look DOPE.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri May-30-08 10:55 PM
And the clips online of The Happening are... not dope.

I'm hopeful both are good.
59295, Like I said in another thread...

Let's at least hope Marvel is smart enough to include the director's and Edward Norton's cut on the DVD release.

Posted by SoulHonky, Fri May-30-08 10:30 PM
How does she know that some of the people posting didn't see it when she did?

Interesting about The Rocker.

The other stuff isn't all that new. Hulk and Dave look terrible and Express is the funniest movie of the decade.
59298, Whats the Rocker??

that guy is flaming out like mad these days. Deservedly, but at this point his frat boy groupies might start deserting him completely. Maybe Pride and Glory has been delayed to add subplots about poker, a violent racist learning his lesson (not before they get off on him beating on ethnic types and spewing hate) and Norton getting all bruised up.

The Rocker deserves some admiration for how completely it's co-opted everything Judd Apatow but is still obviously ersatz Apatow.
59305, this is what I thought for the Hulk
Posted by RobOne4, Sun Jun-01-08 03:04 AM
funny he is my favorite comic book character. I have not been the least bit excited for this movie. The first one I was, and I hated it. This one just hasnt excited me at all. Plus its been in Iron Man's shadow the whole time. I figured if this is good, then once Iron Man opens we should hear nothing but HULK until release date. WRONG! shit is dead quiet.
59306, im actually anticipating The Happening

you didnt mention anything 'insider' worthy at all
theres been speculation on norton concerning the hulk for months now because supposedly him and the director didnt agree with marvel's decisions about the final cut. he even issued a press release about that.

and universal is scared why? they're just ONE of the distributors.

This reaks of hate.
59330, those aren't snob names
Posted by DrNO, Tue Jun-03-08 06:49 PM
although Spike has become one sadly, but at least "Spike" is his childhood nickname. I doubt Shymalan's friends (if he had any!) were calling him M. The guy was a grown man when he decided to rechristen himself Night.
59331, He made it up in college
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Jun-03-08 07:07 PM
M. Night Shymalan has a good ring to it to me. And, again, people have ALWAYS changed their name. Woody Allen, Rock Hudson, Cary Grant, Lauren Bacall, Jennifer Aniston, Michael Ian Black, Portia de Rossi etc.

To hate on him because he chose Night (which makes some sense stemming from his actual middle name) seems petty.
59332, it's more the first initial and including the fake middle name
Posted by DrNO, Tue Jun-03-08 07:36 PM
which is completely portentous and more suited to entitled jerk wad old money morons. Those other names are short, conventional and they belong to performers. With the exception of the recent names you mentioned those names come from eras and traditions that no longer exist. At least Portia made up her name when she was 15 and going through a sexuality crisis.

What kind of douche makes up a new name in college? He wasn't even in a shitty metal band. No excuse!
59333, it makes some sense that the mugfugger calls himself "Night"?
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Wed Jun-04-08 12:26 PM
>To hate on him because he chose Night (which makes some sense
>stemming from his actual middle name) seems petty.

why, cuz his real middle name starts with an N? cmon. that shit is ridiculous.
59334, yes. yes it is.

And you did imply that she saw it and thinks it's scary as fuck.

This film is going to have some great visuals and I think it could be like Signs, great for half the film and then falls apart near the end. Still, it looks like an actual film and has a summer weekend against the soon-to-be flop Hulk (which might be one reason why the PR person was trashing it)

And let's be honest, if The Strangers can open with 20 million, there's a good chance that The Happening makes more money in its opening weekend than Grindhouse did total (25 million).
59355, EARLY TRACKING FOR JUNE 13: 'Hulk' Set to Stomp Shyamalan's 'Happening'
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Mon Jun-02-08 05:29 PM
pre-emptive L for manoj:

http://news.fantasymoguls.com/originalcontent/2008/05/early-trackin-3.html

Tracking will, obviously, continue to improve for The Incredible Hulk, but these early number suggest that this will be a very solid hit with, conservatively, at least $50 million on opening weekend, and it could still rival the $62 million that Lee’s version grabbed in its opening frame. With positive word-of-mouth, there’s no reason why this movie can’t get to $140 million-$150 million domestic. I will continue to update the tracking as industry execs share it with me.

On that same June 13 date, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening (20th Century Fox) does not appear to pose any real threat. The mercurial filmmaker, whose last film was the dreadful Lady in the Water, faces an uphill battle with this movie, which has been (badly) shrouded in secrecy. (The problematic screenplay has been rather completely shredded by Internet movie mavens.) I do not know anyone who has seen it, and it remains unclear whether there will be advance screenings for critics. That is not a good sign.

Starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel, The Happening has virtually no buzz with just 2 percent Un-Aided Awareness, and the movie, which may be Shyamalan’s take on global warming, has only 54 percent Awareness. It trails The Incredible Hulk in Definite Interest with a mere 30 percent, and Happening has only a 4 percent First Choice score 18 days out.

The bottom line may be that moviegoers do not trust the Indian-born, Pennsylvania-raised auteur after a less-than-satisfying twist in his 2004 movie The Village and the disastrous Lady in the Water. It is a very safe bet that The Incredible Hulk will easily win the June 13 weekend, and Shyamalan will need positive word-of-mouth to parlay The Happening into becoming a modest hit.
59356, Well, The Stranger wasn't even on the radar and made 20 million
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Jun-02-08 05:54 PM
And tracking hasn't been that great this summer. Early tracking was off on Sex and the City and pegged Prince Caspian as a hit.

I'd heard a lot of positive things about The Hulk. I'm rooting for Edward Norton and this project. If for no other reason than to get him back in the game.
Yeah, heard the same thang 'bout Eddie. Damn shame. How he manages I'll never know.

59370, Night to screen The Happening after bad review appears on 'net
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Jun-04-08 10:50 PM
For a couple weeks now it was rumored that 20th Century Fox had made the decision to not screen M Night Shyamalan’s The Happening to press after a bad review leaked onto the internet last month. And as you probably know, when studios decide not to screen a movie for the press, it’s usually for good reason.

But as it turns out, Fox has decided to screen the movie for press after all. Studios usually hold WOM screenings (or Word of Mouth Screenings) for the popcorn movies before release. It is typical for movie critics to see the film at these type of screenings. I think the general thinking is that a theater packed with the exact target demographic usually leads to a better theater experience (ie a comedy audience laughs more at more jokes, a horror audience jumps more at scares…etc), which in turn might be likely to influence the invited press also in attendance.

Instead, my local screening of The Happening is being held in a small private screening room, which is very odd for this type of film. Also, I’m not allowed to even bring a guest (another change from standard operating procedure). And I’ve heard the same from friends in other territories, so it appears to be a direct order for Fox themselves. Clarification: The reason I mention this is not that I’m bitter that I can’t bring a guest… 95% of the time I don’t even exercise the option. If I were to read between the lines, I would say that Fox wants invited members of the press, and ONLY invited members of press to screen the film early. Not allowing press to bring a friend or family member means one potentially less negative review on the web the next day.

Even New York Post’s Lou Lumenick notes an unusual addendum to the invite which warns against blogging: “Please keep in mind that reviews cannot post (online blogs included) or run until opening day, June 13th.” Is M Night really afraid of blogs? Is that why no one other than invited press is allowed to screen the film?

It should be noted that even though we are technically a blog, we always hold our reviews of a film until opening day (unless otherwise approved by a national publicist). The note above that Lou mentions is not directed at sites like us, per say (as we follow embargo rules), it is directed at movie critics with personal blogs.

59372, Harry Knowles's Hulk Review (swipe)
Posted by mrshow, Thu Jun-05-08 02:16 AM
I have a feeling Marvel paid for his gastric band surgery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
OH HELL YEAH!

You know… Ever since I was a wee lad, I’ve dreamt of a Cinematic Marvel Universe. I think we all have. Tonight, after the screening of THE INCREDIBLE HULK – an audience member asked a question about the concern about continuity with the comic universe – and Kevin Feige went into an answer that referred to “THE CINEMATIC MARVEL UNIVERSE” – and I think I came a little.

After IRON MAN – we began to feel what was happening – but the early trailers for HULK… just didn’t look promising. However, we’ve begun to have some cool scenes popping up online – and the latest trailers have a lot of fun going on in them. But as our audience dove into this latest Marvel tale… You could feel the room getting giddy.

Once again we had solid actors as Banner, Neil and Ross. Betty was beautiful – and then they throw Tim Blake Nelson in. You’ve got to love this new Marvel Universe that has begun. Actors like Robert Downey Jr, Jeff Bridges, Ed Norton, William Hurt, Tim Roth, Sam Jackson and Tim Blake Nelson.

I know you folks loved IRON MAN – I’m right there. I fucking loved it. This is an INCREDIBLE HULK movie to love too. Watching these last two MARVEL films… where Marvel is actually controlling the vertical and the horizontal. Where executive decisions are being made by people whose profession is COMICS and COMIC MOVIES. I can’t fucking tell you how amazing it is to actually… literally… see the Marvel Universe on screen.

And it is much more evident here, than even in IRON MAN.

It’s not just SHIELD or a Tony Stark cameo. Those are the big obvious ones. And you know that the Super-Soldier formula is used here to give Blonsky his first boost… but here’s the geekiest part. The canister that they pull that vial of interesting liquid from… the Doctor’s name is Dr. Reinstein…. Yes, the actual name of the scientist that injected Steve Rogers with the Super Soldier serum… now the key is… they didn’t expose Blonsky to the Vita-Rays which would super-charge that serum and give him that extra boost that made Captain America that extra bit of badass. But, we’ll see that in an upcoming movie, I’m sure.

Here we have a film with characters named Dr. Samson and Samuel Sterns. And we know about their eventuality. And the nods to the past… they’re here too. What’s great is that we don’t just get the Stan Lee cameo, but the Lou Ferrigno and even… Bill Bixby. You’ll see. All this stuff – it’s just little side things. The film doesn’t STOP for these footnotes – and if you’re not a Marvel freak… it’d scream by without a notice.

But as a MARVEL fan – holy shit… they’re doing it. They’re actually fucking doing it. For the first time in our lives as crazy geeky fanboys… the MARVEL UNIVERSE is moving at 24 frames a second in a theater near us.

What about SPIDER-MAN?

Well – SPIDER-MAN did a good job of establishing the SPIDER-MAN UNIVERSE – you never saw Spidey at the Baxter building? Matt Murdoch didn’t walk by. It stayed within the Spidey-specific universe.

Here… shit. Robert Downey Jr… TONY STARK in a Paramount Distributed film called IRON MAN. Yeah. Check. But Robert Downey Jr… as TONY STARK… in a UNIVERSAL distributed film… See, it isn’t hard. You just do it. You just care enough to say… YES, Iron Man can be in a HULK movie… just not quite suited up yet. And yes, that feels fucking awesome.

BUT wait a minute. How does this work as a HULK movie?

One of the attendees of the screening tonight in Austin sent in a review – and they did a comparison that simply… I must reference because it is very accurate. They compared Ang Lee’s HULK to Robert Wise’s STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. Both films were beautiful, artful and cinematic tellings of prime geek material… HOWEVER – both films failed to move mainstream audiences. They did work for a segment of the audience – but there was a lack of forward momentum. They just didn’t quite GO at the speed that fans hoped for.

Well THE INCREDIBLE HULK – is very much like the re-invention that happened to STAR TREK on STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. Now – I love THE INCREDIBLE HULK, but it isn’t quite STAR TREK II great – but it’s outstanding.

Louis Leterrier has made a HULK movie that first and foremost is badass, kickass and asskicking, but is most certainly not ASS.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK has the call backs to the TV show, in fact… by the end of the film, I think Bruce might even be going by David… At least I think so. I like that Bruce is a character that has been LIVING with this curse/gift. That he’s taken steps to try to handle his problem. And that is very much the Bill Bixby tone of the character. He’s pro-active in trying to CURE himself… but the film isn’t merely a regurgitation of the TV show – it binds the TV show and the Comic into this third universe of Cinema.

Now, I know I’ve been talking a lot about this Cinematic Marvel Universe – but I’ll tell you. I love, love, love – that in THE INCREDIBLE HULK… there’s science fiction weaponry. The Sonic Cannons are OUT-FUCKING-STANDING! The design is goofy and awesome as though Jack Kirby drew them. It’s big and clunky and mounted on the back of an armored vehicle… and that’s AWESOME! And they send waves of power that knock the living shit out of the HULK. And this shit came from Stark Industries. YES!

I love that SHIELD is a scary Big Brother organization that’s monitoring all of our fucking emails. How great is that? Now – if only we’ll get the Helicarrier… and Dum Dum Dugan! And jet packs and skin-tight mission suits – and evil HYDRA and AIM.

These films are on a collision course. They’re building on one another – and Marvel has a supreme chance here to do something that we’ve never seen in cinema… just as they did in Comics. And that’s to create a coherent fantasy Universe across titles, releases and distribution companies.

And if tonight’s audience was any judge… We’re fucking ready, willing and there. I’m dying … dying to see the next 3 years play out with them. Will we see an additional HULK film before the AVENGERS? That will only depend on how this one does. And man… if the tease for THE LEADER is any indication… and fucking Tim Blake Nelson as THE LEADER … well, it’s not David Niven… but it’s fucking Tim Blake Nelson – and that would mean Giant Robots and Humanoids and more awesome scientific funnery. And that’s where we need to go with THE HULK.

Man – I never thought I’d see the day that Marvel would actually get their shit, totally together. This is the sort of thing we’ve been screaming for – and now its actually fucking happening and … man, there should be fucking FIREWORKS and tickertape for this sort of momentous occasion. We should be running in the streets and screaming about how we don’t have Universal Healthcare, we don’t have 10% of Arizona covered with Pond Scum Farms creating Bio-Fuel at 35 cents a gallon… but Goddammit… MARVEL is seriously creating a cohesive MARVEL UNIVERSE. There are signs of a bright future.

Right? We’re gonna be ok. But man… if the entire financial reality collapses and we don’t get to see the AVENGERS movie that we’re building towards… Then GOD… make my clothes hit the ground and take me to Heaven… where this future AVENGERS is on a fucking loop. I can’t Wait! But I must. We’ll all wait… And as THOR comes out and kicks our asses… and IRON MAN 2 whipping up on our asses… Then that fucking period CAPTAIN AMERICA film – which will end with him waking up in the modern world… or floating in that general direction… and being discovered! Well… if those movies continue firing on the same cylinders of these last two… our collective excitement will be really unreasonably friggin high… and there will be those joyless fucks that are pissing on the foreplay these films represent, but ya know what… I don’t know about you – but I’m seeing cheering audiences… and tonight I saw my nephew laying on the floor in front of the guests tonight shaking his hand with the most awesome question that a 7 year old could muster…

“Did that man really turn into the HULK?”

And god damn it – that’s what this is all about. For kids to dream and ask big fucking important questions… Because when you see a man strapped to a lab table and you here his bones snapping and muscles bursting bigger… and you see the pain on the actor’s face and it hurts… it hurts… to that boy’s eyes… that wasn’t Ed Norton and that wasn’t CG. He was invested enough that he ran from the bathroom, didn’t tell his mom where he was… got in trouble, but he asked the question. “Did that man really turn into the Hulk?”

There’s only one answer. “Yes, that’s why Ed Norton couldn’t be here tonight… it’s too dangerous for the audience!”

Yes. That’s why Ed Norton wasn’t there tonight. And that’s awesome!

Posted by primonito, Thu Jun-05-08 01:56 PM
I read in EW that after all the criticism for the last Hulk movie, the studio wanted this to be faster paced and filled with more action. So they decided to edit the movie down to shorter length. Norton wanted it longer for more character development etc.

So Norton decided not to promote the film because of this disagreement in artistic vision.

59388, The Happening getting killed in early reviews (some spoilers)
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Jun-09-08 04:44 PM
ManojWatch has been underway at Defamer long enough to know that the director's latest, The Happening, faces a bit of an uphill climb when it reaches theaters at last this Friday. But while previously we'd only had one anonymous review and a pair of introspective pre-mortems with the "press-shy" Shyamalan — the latest appearing yesterday in the LA Times — the film officially screened for press for the first time on Sunday evening. Naturally 20th Century Fox lost our invitation (and thus, we suppose, instructions for a review embargo — we'll never know!) in the mail, but we heard from a reviewer who was there and has new word on Manoj's Folly:

The only big observation I would add to the earlier review it is that The Happening doesn't deserve as many words as the tipster gave to it. The film fails in every respect, but it's also really, really boring. The conflict follows such a simple outline and the plot structure dissipates after a few minutes, and you're left with a bunch of people on the road fleeing an invisible force for the rest of the running time: Little Miss Sunshine as a horror film. It's bad, but not even ambitious enough for viewers to enjoy the stinking muck.

Yikes. More spoilerrific details, including background on Shyamalan's First! Ever! R-rating! after the jump.

The Happening is all concept and no execution. You can see the ideas that gave rise to the film, but there's no film there. Mark Wahlberg is a science teacher grappling with some... science-y disaster. Wahlberg and wife Zooey Deschanel have to overcome their marital problems in order to stay alive. Blah blah. They get scared, head to the field, join with other survivors and run, run, run. There is so much running. They're scared, but they don't know what scares them. This is standard Shyamalan turf, but none of his past films have felt this bland

Even the suicides, which earn the film its R-rating, feel strangely uninspired. The sight of people jumping from buildings or shooting themselves are predictable and thus not frightening. One exception: A great long shot of a car crash that's followed by another horrendous act done in such a cool-headed manner that it truly chilled me.

But that's one good shot. It's padded by the shallow melodrama of Wahlberg and Deschanel's characters, and Shyamalan's cheap use of heavy violence presumably for no other reason beyond making the audience go, "What the fuck?" I'm mainly referring to a scene involving child death, but really, the whole movie is like one big WTF. If you've heard the line from the trailer, "There appears to be an event happening," then you've heard it all. And you've heard enough.

Maybe the real twist here is that the movie doesn't actually open on Friday, but just continues to exist in a world of inverse hype. Anyone else got a better idea?

He's not bullet-proof anymore after the village and lady in the water. I think the film still opens with about 25 - 30 million (if the Stranger can open with 20, I'd have to think that's the least Happening will do) but the bad reviews make things harder for him.

59408, big ol' spoiler: NOT REALLY
Posted by B9, Fri Jun-13-08 08:17 AM
here's the movie in 61 words:

This is a movie about "be good to the planet": Plants start releasing toxins to kill humans, but somehow not animals (go figure); Marky Mark figures out it's because "humans are negative". He braves the open air to reunite with his woman and because they love each other SO SO MUCH, the plants stop giving off toxins and don't kill them.

THE END

NOW, can we call him "the worst film maker of our time"? Does Uwe Boll have competition?

59409, He's not a bad director. He's actually quite a good director.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jun-13-08 08:34 AM
He's great with visuals, great with creating a tense mood, great with establishing vivid settings.

His problem is his writing. And it has been the last several flicks. He's doing the best he can with the shitty scripts he's giving himself.

EDIT: If that's how it ends tho, then Christ.
59410, If he was given, say, 1/3rd of the budget he gets
Posted by B9, Fri Jun-13-08 08:41 AM
I guarantee his movies wouldn't look nearly as good and wouldn't have any type of "artistry" to them; in this one, because even he is conscious that his stiche is running dry, he goes for the R by needlesly goreing it up, not even hinting at the necessity of gore for horror movies, but just gore-for-gore's sake type crap. Visually, only three of his movies ever were "okay" and the one I like the most, the Village, was like a bad student sketch of Witness.
59411, he is bad
Posted by DrNO, Fri Jun-13-08 04:50 PM
those might be qualities that make a director seem good but his track record paints him as a hack. His vision stinks, the rest doesn't really matter.

And I'd say the look of his films might be more the work of the heavy hitter cinematographers who have never shot a shabby looking frame in their lives.
59412, the criticisms concern writing, not technical skill...
Posted by Basaglia, Fri Jun-13-08 04:59 PM
59413, well that really elevates him
Posted by DrNO, Fri Jun-13-08 05:04 PM
maybe he's got a career as a CSI director. What a genius.

When he surrounds himself with as many seasoned pros as he does it isn't hard to look technically capable. Maybe there's a reason his indies stink so bad and nobody has bothered to go back to them, huh?
59414, maybe...maybe there's a reason he turns montrous profits, too
Posted by Basaglia, Fri Jun-13-08 08:29 PM

damn I just had to look that up, I remember that nigga was saying some wild shit during the invasion, but I thought you were just loosely paraphrasing/exaggerating for effect... but nope - that nigga really said that shit! LMAO

and perfectly stated for this thread. masterful.
59429, hehe, i knew you'd dig that joke if anybody did...
Posted by dula dibiasi, Sun Jun-15-08 12:26 AM
i can actually appreciate basa's "grindhouse" tactic tho

even tho that flick's got absolutely NOTHING to do w/ night's shitty movies + horrible filmmaking skills, if he keeps saying it enough times cats'll buy into it (it's already happening in this thread, actually -- no pun intended)

lmao, it's kind of like how jay kept telling niggas reasonable doubt was a classic until they just accepted it
59430, yeah, it's kinda like saying Saddam & 9/11 together enough times
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Sun Jun-15-08 11:32 AM
that people started believing they must be connected.

powerful tactics indeed.

>lmao, it's kind of like how jay kept telling niggas reasonable

ha - this ain't the lesson, it's safe to admit you don't hate jay.

Granted the imagery of the falling bodies is cool but the rest? gtfooh

you making it sound like Citizen Kane cinematography

Horrawful - © Shaq

Mark was the worst actor ever in it, took it back to his Fear days

Zoe was fly though, amazing eyes

The dialogue was so f-ing terrible

My crowd was sitting in silence for a good minute when the credits started to roll, felt like how the Soprano's ended, like "is that it?"

definitely not a "good" movie, but full of great intentional and especially unintentional (and sometimes you don't know which is which) humor.

the theatre i saw it in was laughing the whole time.

markymark is perfectly cast-- the voice, the crinkled up face. it's brilliant comedy if you watch this as camp... which you kind of have to.

the part where he says "oh no" was classic.

in more than one scene. How fucking amateur!!!!!!! I used to respect M. Night. Even after some flops and even with this movie I had respect... UNTIL I SAW THE BOOM MIC DIP INTO THE SHOT LIKE 20 TIMES!!!! LMAO!!

In the scene where they get to the house in the middle of nowhere and old dude won't let them in, and in different scenes at the old lady's house the microphone dips IN AND OUT OF THE FRAME!!! HOW EMBARASSING!!!

LMAO!!!

so, the first half of the movie is cut on a totally different frame and the projectionist is supposed to slowly resize while the film is running? POWERFUL INSIDER!

59466, even if it is some massive projectionist error across the country
Posted by B9, Sat Jun-14-08 12:46 PM
its STILL because its such a shitty movie and the studio was so very scared of the negative reviews they didnt get it to theaters early enough for projectionists to screen and resize on the fear of the negatory-buzz breaking before opening weekend.

Personally, I only hated "The Lady In The Water". Anyone who hated "The Happening" should do themselves a favor and click on the IMDB link below, should explain things you missed while text messaging your friends and going to the bathroom.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0949731/board/thread/108848107

All I'm going to say about "The Happening" right now is that the old lady nearly made me shit my pants. M. Night set up some really nice shots in the film, too. Worth seeing.

1. The Sixth Sense
2. Unbreakable
3. The Happening
4. The Village
5. Signs
6. The Lady In The Water

...and I don't need to twist for this shieeet (c) M. Night via The-Dream
59502, wow.

...but STFU, you haters are so caught up right now you can't even see through your veil of ignorance - I never said he's better than Hitchcock, but it's undeniable he is following Hitch's formula. He's a niche filmmaker, his work is pretty much in the same vein as The Twilight Zone as far as his political sentiments go and in the same storytelling vein as Hitchcock's works. Meanwhiles you have assholes like Brian DePalma, who's been trying to emulate Hitchcock since the 70's ("Sisters" is still an underappreciated horror classic, tho) and has never managed to carry that title as a certain generations Hitchcock.

59504, lol...no he's YOUR Hitchcock maybe

Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Jun-15-08 09:40 AM
He's viewed as the current master of suspense by the American public. The critics don't agree... but then again, the critics didn't always agree with some of Hitch's flicks too.

Night Dogg has made it a point to put himself in the public eye to this degree so that he can be compared to Hitch. This means a lot of people hate him, and he sets himself up to make his failures seem bigger than they might actually be. But he invites the comparison, and at times he earns it.

59512, Don't lose focus on what this post was really about
Posted by calij81, Sun Jun-15-08 11:16 AM
it was about the Hulk vs. The Happening. People thought the Hulk would bomb and was going to get shitty reviews. While others, mostly M. Night supporters thought the Happening would beat out the Hulk and prove Night was back after two (Village and LITW)lackluster movies.

Fact is the Hulk is a better movie than The Happening and will make more money than The Happening. Not just this weekend but next weekend, weekend after next and so on. While most movies fall off after their first weekend I believe the Hulk will still stay strong and probably remain number one for next weekend as the only movies that come out are Get Smart and the Love Guru, which isn't much competition. You will see the Hulk benefit from positive word of mouth, while the Happening will suffer from negative word of mouth. Besides box office numbers the Hulk is about to make a killing off of toys, clothes, and other merchandise.

For all the "the Hulk isn't real and he shouldn't talk" I felt the CGI Hulk gave a better performance than Marky Mark, who was more one dimensional than the Hulk.

However it has become a The Happening will make more money than Grindhouse. It probably will and yes Grindhouse was a shitty movie but by beating out Grindhouse doesn't make The Happening a great movie. This is funny because no matter how you shine it, shit is still shit. Besides just about any BIG summer movie can make a profit and killing in its first weekend.
59513, It's about you being mad
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Jun-15-08 02:02 PM
59514, Not mad just disappointed in M Night
Posted by calij81, Sun Jun-15-08 07:19 PM
I like M Night, at least his earlier films and would like to see him continue making good movies. However, he is not above being called out for making shitty, below average movies.

The thing is, going to the movies are expensive (10.50 here in SD) and gas is also expensive as hell. So if I am going to spend my money on a movie, it better be good. I feel like M Night owes me my movie ticket refund and gas money for driving down to see it.

This is more about just taking your L and moving on, instead of pulling a Bush/Cheney and pretending like nothing is wrong, when in fact something is.

Yes it will beat out another shitty movie in Grindhouse but it failed to do what YOU claimed, which was beat the Hulk and the Hulk was the better of the two movies.

Next week the Hulk will still be number 1 and The Happening will probably fall into 4th place pulling in just around million.

Posted by Basaglia, Sun Jun-15-08 09:37 PM

i said we have to take into account that happening is r-rated, while hulk has a built-in audience and a PG-13 rating and cost 150.

55 mill is NOT that great for the hulk. 30 mil for the happening is a damn W, no matter how they wanna play it. we won, they lost. they just mad.

Family friendly film on a family friendly weekend!!! I mean for NIght to get all that with an R rating durin a weekend when families are hittin the theaters in droves is just proof that hes the man
59526, Hulk did $85 million worldwide opening weekend. That's not an L
Posted by mrhood75, Sun Jun-15-08 10:22 PM
59527, Fair enough but Happening was in less theaters and got more back
Posted by Ceej, Sun Jun-15-08 10:25 PM
percentage wise soooooooooo
59528, Anyone who believes Universal is upset with Hulk's performance...
Posted by mrhood75, Sun Jun-15-08 11:22 PM
...is smoking rocks. $54.5 million domestic and more than $85 million world wide first week is very good weekend by any stretch of the imagination. With numbers like that, this movie makes back it's budget, no problemo. And the dirty little secret is that ALL movies make back their budgets when you factor in DVD sales, which studios do. Movies in the theaters have basically become expensive commercials for the DVDs.

So any notion that the Universal brass is sitting around the board room table, sweating whether or not they're going make their money back, is pretty silly.
59529, not grindhouse...
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Jun-15-08 11:31 PM
59530, No, Grindhouse too.
Posted by mrhood75, Sun Jun-15-08 11:42 PM
Made $25 million domestic and $25 million worldwide. Plus another $37 million in DVD sales. That means it made money.
59531, And why was The Happening in less theaters???

59534, how u gonna claim you won on this
Posted by the sway, Tue Jun-17-08 08:40 PM
when hulk made nearly twice as much money?

making an extra $5,000 per theater?

honestly, i could care less which of these mediocre movies make more money, and i don't want to say too much bout this shit less i be labeled "mad," but claiming the happening "won" is pretty absurd
59535, it cost 3 times as much and had a pg-13 rating....mad?

59536, So for those of us keeping score....

59538, ryan, them numbers ain't lying...maybe it's cause night respects sistas
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Jun-15-08 07:20 PM

every sista in his movies got dat 'tegrity and portrayed positively.

every sista is QT flicks are sexpots, sassys and FOOLS!!!

you saw in unbreakable how loving elijah's mom was...MMMMMMHUH...excellent portrayal of the strong black woman. she encouraged her boy's gifts and he became a super villain. GOOD!

meanwhile, QT has ebony goddess pam grier stealin shit and being sassy. and then he takes sydney tamia portier and chops her damn leg off like she's an animal.

niggas are TIRED of QT. he wack and he don't like black folks. that's why his films be flopping, because blacks don't support him no more. GOOD!

59539, seriously, people hate on him for no reason sometimes
Posted by dunk, Sun Jun-15-08 08:02 PM
he's a great director imo. i'm wasn't a big fan of lady in the water but that's it. his movies have ranged from great to average but nothing lower.

59543, man, them bullshit ass reviews helped it...however, 55 ain't that great

59546, I was reffering to the bomb part. It didnt do great but it did get numbers
Posted by Ceej, Sun Jun-15-08 09:56 PM
BUT if Happeneing is gonna be called a flop then Hulk should be considered a HUGE FLOP........50% of the budget earned for Night against ALL ODDs versus 32% for Hulk when the stars were all aligned for them expecially since their Oscar nominee is better imo.
59547, But the real test for the Hulk and Happening or any summer
Posted by calij81, Mon Jun-16-08 10:47 AM
movie is the second weekend. I believe the Hulk will still stay at number one for a second weekend and has an outside chance to be the number one movie three weekends in a row.

While the Happening will probably fall to three next week and out of the top five the weekend after.

59548, RE: The Happening

But on the poster it's still credited to Penn and Harrison (ie, Norton)

Weird

In any event, there's been a lot of talk recently about our guild (the WGA) relaxing the credit rules... I think this is what it's referring to, but I'm not completely sure...
