You all ever heard of this show?

So I finally decided to discover just how accurate the hype was. Not wanting to parrot the all-too-obvious adjective-laden layers of critical praise that this show routinely and deservedly has poured upon on it, let me just write that, without comparison or any doubt, these 13 episodes represent a unique single season of television; seldom has TV conjured as many emotional reactions and been so intelligently written, expertly acted, creative but genuine, captivating throughout.

So as I watched the series a second times through, the list fiend in me showed itself and I came up with this:

(Quick Note on Spoilers: I have only seen Season One--an expired Netflix account made me stop with the first set--but I am not a spoiler-stickler like others may be. I know the "big thing" that happened last season and don't care if anyone lets spill anything else. However, because some people have that disposition, you might wanna throw up a "Season ?? Spoiler" warning just in case. And if you still haven't seen Season 1 and don't want it ruined, leave this post now.)

I've only seen Season 1 too, been putting off season 2 for whatever reason.

and i know i only watched the first episode of it, but all the "new" characters (think: the weird ass white kids and the whole shipping crew) just didn't draw out the same interest that most everyone in season 1 inspired.

and then from reading the Netflix description of the season, Proposition Joe and the thought of international smuggling just didn't seem as exciting to me as what was covered in the first 13.

but i know i'm probably wrong. it's probably just as good. i know Omar and Stringer were still involved at that point, and they were the best remaining alive characters from S1, IMO, so i'll probably check it out eventually, but i'm not rushing.

You should know by now that you have to give HBO shows about 5 episodes to get going. A couple of those "weird ass white kids" felt like family by the end.

Not to mention, something major goes down with one of the most compelling characters from Season 1.

when i start up the Netflix account again, probably summer some time, i'll check it out. the greatness of Season 1 has earned it.

its gonna take you a few episodes to warm up to the new characters.

but everyone from season 1 returns as well.

however, the new characters and setting are fantastic. Nick is one of my favorite characters on all seasons of the wire.

people here were practically rioting around here when it started "longshoremen? wtf???", "who the fuck are all these white people?"

but trust, season 2 is the absolute shit. it's just gonna take you a little longer to realize it.

it's the best season (though a case could be made for any of them)

You've got me wanting to watch the whole season again. The only thing that stuck out to me is I think #20, the chess scene, belongs in the Top 10.

plus, the chess metaphor isn't exactly the most innovative thing ever--as an example, Bubb's Dead Soldiers critique of Sydnor was something i'd never heard or thought of before--but it was executed quite well. that's all.

But both were extremely well done.

I have often argued that this is the most pivotal scene in any of three seasons.

-D'Angelo see Wallace and Bodie playing checkers w/ chess peices (i.e. playing the game the wrong way- remember they were fucking up the money and dope in the pit and part of D'Angelo's penance was to straighen out the mess).

-Bodie bucks initially, but quickly tunes in and picks up the concept really quickly (especially about the pawns turning into more powerful peices) I think it's also ironic that it was Wallace that got bodie to listen to D'Angelo's message.

Look at all that occured in the aftermath of that lesson:

Wallace(pawn)-dead ("Pawns get capped quick" -D'Angelo)
D'Angelo (bishop)- captured then sacraficed by the queen
String(Queen)- Dead;had all the moves, but made one too many risky moves
Avon (King)- Currently boxed in, but still on the board.
Bodie(Pawn)- quickly ascending up the ranks

If you think about it, the same chess analogy applies to the law too, except that rather than them being killed they're sent to the boat... or pawn shop unit.

well, that's a great explanation, but like i said, and maybe's it's cause i had just watched Fresh again before that, the chess metaphor wasn't so startling fresh. it was executed well, but there were D'Angelo moments that got to me more than that one. still great though. any other show would hope to have just one moment like that, let alone 24 others.

thus far in the entire series. Just wait until you see seasons 2 and 3. The chess metaphor is applicable to each group on the show.

I know it's not a new metaphor or anything, but the set-up is great (the idea of Bodie and Wallace playing checkers with chess pieces is kind of funny) and breakdown is really well-executed.

1. The "This is not your fault" speech by Rawls to McNulty. Didn't see this mentioned. Maybe you did.

2. McNulty and Bunk get D'Angelo to write a letter. Never gets mentioned, but this is one of my favorite cop interragation scenes. Played so masterfully.

3. The Bird arrest. Showed the team coming together and not acting like a bunch of fuck-ups anymore.

4. McNulty shows up at Pearlman's door for a booty call. "You're such an asshole, McNulty."

5. The crew tries to move a desk. You might have mentioned this, but I didn't see it.

yeah, in the span of one episode, The Hunt, Rawls went from being an annoying curmudgeon--did i just use that word?--to being a great character. he basically owned that episode.

"gaping asshole" <--he said that too.

i was keeping a running list of the moments and this was one of them, because i of course didn't end on an even 25. but it got knocked off, call it an honorable mention. that was one of Lester's finest moments. he yelled "hey shorty", threw the 40 down with a crash, and then put a good one on Bird.

another memorable scene was later in interrogation, when's Fredro Starr calling everyone a "bitch dyke cunt", Daniels comes in and rips up the Polaroid that had previously been taken to document the number of marks on Bird's body and face. that was a good look for Daniels.

yeah, a nice lighter moment.

the Sgt. telling his Layla Kaufman nipples story to Rawls was a similar good one.

That scene was a challenge. One of the cops was telling the writer that the cops curse so much that pretty soon all they'll say is "fuck" or "mother fucker." The writer thought it was a good idea and wrote the Fuckity Fuck scene because of it.

Especially when they apprehend him in Philly.

Also, Daniels standing up to Clay Davis was great.

i cant watch that video without shouting out wee bay!

Added to when Wee Bey confessing to the Murders even the ones he did'nt commit, all for a "pit beef" sandwich. Hillarious scene!

I would've added Wee Bey's plea copping. Dude was grubbin @ the same time & didnt really give a fuck how many years they gave him or what they were charging him w/ whether he did it or not. Now that's a loyal soilder.

There's also a scene where String meets up w/ Omar @ a park. I think Prop Joe set up the meet. Anyways, they're circling around this fountain I think discussing a hit on Avon. Omar is wearing a wire & trying 2 get String 2 say that he's affiliated w/ Avon. String doesnt budge 1 bit & never makes any mention of him directly. The camera work is top notch as it ends w/ McNulty in the back seat of an unmarked listening in on the wire & saying something like, "How smooth/careful is Stringer Bell?!?!"

From that moment on I was hooked.

Both of those moments were in S1 right?

When they're like "the only way we'll talk sentence reduction is if you start talking about Bell or Barksdale", and he just says "Naahh". Bey just had a great voice and manner to him.

Since its so fresh in your mind, can you or anyone else remind me what's the cats name who takes the notes during Stringer's meetings? He's not in a lot of scenes but he's very effective w/ what he has 2 work w/. Especially in S3 when he's dealing w/ Benard & the prepaid cell phones. I hope he has a bigger role in S4.

Pearlman drops by the basement to talk case strategy with Daniels, when she comes ou they're having the 3 cops are enthralled, watching the B-girl take measured steps with string tied around her ankles.

Bodie always saw through D'Angelo as being soft to the point that D would sometimes go out of his way to impress him.

like when Bodie escaped from Juvi, and D'angelo's laughing at him, Bodie clowns him by saying "your ass would still be there". so to save face, D, cops to a murder he didn't even commit.

or when Wallace is playing with an action figure and Bodie spots D'Angelo smiling while he's watching Wallace (almost like a proud dad). a disgusted Bodie throws a bottle at Wallace.

or Bodie's disappointment in the way D 'dealt' with Johnny after he burned them.

That Pogues song at the wake scene in season 3 is fucking awesome, the kind of song my Italian ass wants at my own wake/funeral. It's the perfect song for that kind of a guy, in that kind of a job, with those kinds of colleagues.

I also loved when they used Walk the Line in season 2, and the other Pogues song when McNulty's driving absolutely shitfaced in season 2.

The music is incredibly well done.

I was always stunned by how well they chose tracks for scenes.

i'm desperately trying to find that one joint that played in the car in episode 7 (one arrest), when they arrested the drug runner.

The scene when Burrel tells Daniels to bust all of Barksdale's drug houses after Kima got shot so they can look tough in the media. Daniels look of utter disgust at them possibly fucking up the case in order to snatch headlines is great. Then they way he just spit out that line makes everything perfect.

it's what made me know it was a series to stick with.

that was a brilliant... and hilarious scene.

i read the book and they said that dialogue like that was pretty common.

Later for the bone, let's nugget this meat up and make some real money.

Hey Mr. Nugget, you the bomb. Imma write my clowny ass name on this fat ass check.

That and the "little slow, little late" For real "How are you never gonna be slow? How are you never gonna be late?"

It feels way too stagey, have we seen them playing since?
Plus it's a tired analogy to begin with.

It is a bit too obvious a metaphor. Also, did we really need Bode to say "that reminds me of String" For a show that thrives on subtlety, it was very obvious.

Remember that's underling Bodee making the comment. It's obvious to us and we've been thinking about it already, but the line signifies that even this young kid coming up is seeing the parallels already. Ultimately that goes a long way towards explaining and revealing the mentality of the character.

Kima and Cheryl are shown in sexual situations, a rarity in mass media. On The Wire, the committed love relationship of this Black lesbian couple is treated as no different than any other relationship in the series. This oridinary treatment thus provides a mass media depiction of middle-class Black women that remains highly unusual." (146)

"In addition to its depiction of a Black lesbian couple, the first season of HBO's original series The Wire introduced the character of Omar, a gay Black male gangsta who seeks revenge on the drug dealers who brutally murdered Brandon, his gay Black lover. Again, the treatment on The Wire breaks with stereotypes. Omar is dark-skinned, violent, and in no way appears to be the stereotypical 'sissy.' Moreover, the gay Black male relationship is between two working-class Black men, thus challenging the association of gay sexuality with Whiteness and / or with middle-class men." (176)

This is partially why The Wire is the best show (ever). They've put some characters out there that aren't really seen anywhere else.

I would like to just say thanks for the consistent praise of this show from PTP. I figured I should check it out and I finally got around to getting it on Netflix. I was just blown away. Of my favorite 10 TV characters, The Wire takes at least six. The "Fuck" defintely stands out from season one.

Can't wait to see how Season Two wraps up. And really can't wait until Season Three comes out.
