I am 25, about to turn 26 and they are already starting to destroy my childhood. It's like they say "if it ain't broke don't fix it" so why does Bay insist on destroying it? Why couldn't they just use the original ICONIC transformer designs? This movie will be the biggest bomb/bust/flop/whatever other adjective you want to use of this summer. They will get a big backlash from the original fanbase and the younger generation won't find this movie appealing, no matter how much they Hollywoodize it up and make it flashy with some stupid love story. Especially after all the negative rewies start coming out.

If he'd stayed 100% accurate, it's corny and overly purist and lame.
If he changes it, Transformers loyalists-- his core audience-- get pissy.
Bay can't win. But he's not trying to sell JUST Transformers fans. He wants to sell everyone. And I, being unfamiliar with the original Transformers, think that those things look pretty fucking cool.

54638, 100% accurate? Posted by Kozmikblak, Fri May-11-07 02:51 PM
How about 50-50?. Changing Megatrons look I think folks can deal with, but some of those designs are wack. Starscream for one looks wack. How about Jazz? Why the only Optimus and Bumble have any color. No other alien robot know what color is?? Adding a little color would go a long way to bring out those designs. I personally am disappointed and don't see myself making much of an effort to see this in the theater.

54639, RE: I mean, everyone realizes that Bay can't win, right? Posted by jadedeejay, Fri May-11-07 05:15 PM
I willing to accept the fact that, at it's core, Transformers is basically little more than a toy franchise that was marketed to 8 YEAR OLD BOYS in the 80's. There's not much there in terms of story to work with. In order to appeal to a broader audience, changes have to be made from the original concept to keep it from being corny and juvenile.
I'm also willing to acknowledge that they need to make these robots from space look believable in terms of movement and detail (i.e. Prime's tires not magically disappearing when he changes to robot form, elbows and arms being able to move fluidly, etc.), and in THAT regard, at least, I think they succeeded.
But really, is it THAT much to ask that the characters at least bear SOME iconic resemblence to their namesakes? Obviously this is more important with some characters than others. I couldn't imagine them trying to pull off Frenzy as a cassette nowadays, for example.
But Megatron without the arm cannon? That's like Superman without the 'S' or Punisher without the skull!
Why bother?
That said, I'm still prolly gonna see that shit. Doesn't mean I'm gonna like it....

54640, 80% accuracy would have done well. Posted by JusticeSabre, Fri May-11-07 09:47 PM
This is like 3% accurate. And it's not like the old designs hadn't been updated using realistic vehicles and such, yet retaining the original design aesthetic. It's like they scrapped everything that worked from TF canon and just kept the factions and some names.
Wackness.

54642, LOL at all y'all Posted by BigWorm, Fri May-11-07 08:26 AM
This is the same as the huge nerdy life lesson I had to learn when Star Wars Episodes 1-3 came out.
You're a child of the 80s that grew up loving Star Wars, Transformers and Inspector Gadget?
The sad reality is that these moviemakers don't give one fuck about you. They weren't even really thinking about you when they started these new projects. Just like with Spiderman 3, for every diehard comic fan shouting foul when they screwed up on Venom's voice...there are about 1,000 kids out there that thought the whole movie was great.
That's the tragedy. Unless that Transformers movie is a huge unexpected flop, it will spawn a whole generation of kids wanting their parents to buy Transformers for them, and not ones that look like the old shit from the 80s. And if you complain about how Optimus Prime looks to Michael Bay, he'll be like oh yeah, so sorry patna, excuse me I gotta go look at my new Hummer for a minute.

you realize that these same 13 yrs old weren't alive for the after cartoons we grew up on? you realize these are the kids that will continue the transformer torch?

Granted, Bumblebee and Jazz are pretty decent to me.

54653, Should they, though? Posted by JusticeSabre, Fri May-11-07 09:58 PM
Going off of the 20+ YO established canon of TF, Autobots (Cybertrons) and Decepticons (Destrons) are the same "race". Autobots originally created as work machines, Decepticons originally created as military machines... Both to be sold by their creators to various inhabited planets around the universe. Why would one faction appear as monsters and the other less-threatening? Chalk that up to bad writing by this film's creative staff.
They fucked a simple, yet expandable premise up. They could have made TF movies well into the next decade, on some Star Wars shit if they handled it correctly.

I can see why so many compalin, because people want the orignal design. but you realize, these are robots from space....ROBOTS FROM SPACE. They need to look technical and organic. I rather see these designs then some block shaping lego designs. Don't get me wrong, the original Transformers were nice, but it's 2007...we need to upgrade. This movie will RULE JULY and I also bet most of you guys will watch it. I can't wait. I'm looking forward to this movie.

54677, Honestly.... Posted by PRYM8, Mon May-14-07 05:24 AM
... let's take the time out to think about this shit really. I don't know if ya'll know this but Transformers was a cartoon. A cartoon that we watched when we were little kids. The cartoon itself had a lot of loop holes we overlooked because we were kids. Now that we are adults, a lot of that same shit is not going to fly. Especially since we are now the ones PAYING to see this shit.
First of, the changes they made to the characters that everyone is talking about. Megatron was a handgun. A fucking handgun. That shit might have been cool to watch a 50 foot robot turn into a handgun when we were 8-10 years old, but that shit does not translate into a 90 minute film to the 25 and up. WTF? Onto Bumblebee, from what I understand is that VW did not want their brand to be in a movie associated with war and did not allow Bay to use it. Makes sense considering that the VW's are peace loving hippie mobiles(for the most part). Soundwave was a boombox/tapedeck whatever. A big ass robot that transforms into a ghetto blaster and shoots out tapes that turn into a bird, cat and a midget makes no sense. Now his character could be played two different ways. Either they can change his physical appearance(smart) and keep his loyalty to megatron in place(hopefully) or the could turn him into a 8 foot robot(weak) with the same personality (weaker). My point is... Stop all the crying!!!!! Be mature enough to realize that translating a 30 minute cartoon into a 90 ish minute film is going to involve some changes. Shit, even the animated film had to go through some changes. Optimus Prime died remember!!!!!!! At least see the movie first before you start crying about it.

54678, RE: Honestly.... Posted by Complex720, Mon May-14-07 06:26 AM
just pop in the "Transformers: The Movie" VHS & pretend this never happened.
That's my plan.
They just tried too hard to modernize it & make it appeal to today's kids or something. For everybody saying "kids can't relate to tapedecks in 2007".. well, they could make the movie's timeframe the 80's, easy problem to solve. And about things being unbelievable... c'mon, gotta point to the same point they're making -- yep, it is based on a cartoon, it is based on fantasy & with all those things aren't you already suspending a certain amount of belief anyway so, what's the difference if it's for a giant robot that turns into some tiny object or any other fiction-based thing? Either way, that ish don't appeal to me very much aside from the name, "Transformers"
Face it, the franchise just got butchered on this one.

"They just tried too hard to modernize it & make it appeal to today's kids or something. For everybody saying "kids can't relate to tapedecks in 2007".. well, they could make the movie's timeframe the 80's, easy problem to solve."
Not easy. It be much easier for them to make the film during the present tense cost/resource wise. Not to mention, the majority of movie goers are going to want to be impressed with the sleeknees that todays CGI can provide. I think only the purists would have appreciated making it take place in the eighties.
"And about things being unbelievable... c'mon, gotta point to the same point they're making -- yep, it is based on a cartoon, it is based on fantasy & with all those things aren't you already suspending a certain amount of belief anyway so, what's the difference if it's for a giant robot that turns into some tiny object or any other fiction-based thing?"
So you'd be perfectly fine if Megatron turned into a handgun, landed in Starscreams hand and Starscream mounted up on a horse, slapped on a cowboy hat/boots and started riding that horse into battle with the Autobots? Come on fam, even though fantasy is fantasy, it's gotta carry some sort of logical and BELIEVABLE explanation.
"Either way, that ish don't appeal to me very much aside from the name, "Transformers"Face it, the franchise just got butchered on this one."
And to make that sort of statement without seeing the movie is what I don't understand. I can understand you saying it does not look like it's going to be good. But the whole franchise being butchered? I wish Okayplayer would have been around when Optimus died because I think the pre-pubescent angst would have been quite similar.

You and about everyone else online seems to think t hat the cartoon is the only source material to pull from... and it isn't.
Marvel had a good run in the 80's and early 90's with TF comics. They actually outlasted the TV show and featured the characters in more mature/dramatic settings. There are some things that needed changing (vehicle modes dues to restrictions from auto makers, some plot devices) but it wasn't totally broken to start with. It just needed a little updating. These cats that made the film tossed out damn near everything but some character names and the warring factions. You'll see, if you go check it in theaters...
A lot of what made the original premise work got dropped like a bad habit, all in the name of "updating".

How you got to 9k posts is a miracle...
Aight so here's the truth as I see it... I'm fine with placing the timeframe in the now. Not a problem. I'm fine with updating the looks of the characters. Also, not a problem. I also agree that Spiderman 3 sucked. But that's all that we agree on son.
Truth is, changing the vehicles is the biggest problem. That's like making Spiderman a black dude. That's like making Batman a woman. Sure, we all love black people & females, but come now. That's just some bullshit. Certain things should stay the way they are.
"But dog, we're talking about robots, not people"... bullshit. THESE robots ARE the people in THIS universe. SO changing Bumblebee from a beetle to a fucking CAMARRO is basically like changing one of the aforementioned. The car reflects the characters personality. Period.
But here in Hollywood cash rules & since GM hasn't made a profit in oh over 20+ quarters they had to offer Bay prolly 10 mill just to get thier cars in the new TF. So all of our dreams of having a somewhat faithful port over get washed away by cash.
So there you have it. TF will NOT shit on Spiderman. Doing something different is NOT always 'right'. & I got laid last night. Your lame.

Personally, I think you guys are being needlessly nostalgic.
When I was a kid, the vehicle was SECONDARY(distantly) to the character. All I really knew is that some cats drove, some cats flew. What really mattered was how the niggas talked, interacted, their personalities, shit like that.
The vehicles weren't *irrelevant* but you guys acting like that shit completely redefines everything are just being dorky.

Ok so apparently you didn't really pay much attention to how the characters were & how the vehicles reflected the certain characters emotions & how they interacted with each other. IE: you just proved my point.

Whooooaaa... settle down there skimpy. The all caps thing...

I'm sure it'll be well written. I'm sure it'll be exciting. I'm sure it'll be coherent. The thing is that this movie *like all other Bay films* is going to be like a platinum blonde with big ol' boobies & a banging body: she's great to look at but there's really no substance there...
>The motherfucking VENOM looked GREAT in Spiderman 3!!
You must be a fan of the Larson Venom & not the McFarlane Venom. Figures...
>>Doing something different is NOT always 'right'. > >Who the fuck said that?
The producers of this movie who brainwashed you into thinking that this 'different' approach is 'cool'.

Actaully I did.

54686, Agreed. If the story engages us, no one will give a flying shit. Posted by Frank Longo, Mon May-14-07 08:28 PM
There could be concern due to some past Bay movies being noticeably lacking in story. But we can deal with that when it comes.
Those robots, regardless of what they used to look like, still looked primed and ready to blow shit up and kick ass and be cool. I could give a fuck how faithful it is.
One of my FAVORITE comic book movie character adaptations for the screen EVER was Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin. People shat the bed cuz he didn't look like the comic, he was black, oh no! But the bottom line was name ONE WHITE ACTOR who would've captured the essence, the coolness, and the intimidation factor of the Kingpin better than Michael Clarke Duncan.
If you want strict translations, read some fan fiction or some shit. I'm gonna see this movie opening day and see a kickass war of robots with guns.

"Everyone has an opinion and everyone has their own personal memories- I understand that. But I've learned a long time ago that you cannot please everybody. I wouldn't have it any other way. This was probably the first film that I dedicated to myself. Words cannot express how proud I am of the outcome, and I'm sure many will agree.
I am confident that I will show the world how Transformers look through MY eyes. And it will be one hundred times better than how you remembered it. I'm here to revolutionize everything you know about the Transformers, not recreate it. To the ones who doubt- sorry but I'm not in the business of nostalgia. I'm a filmmaker, and a damn good one too."

I'm not expecting Shakespeare here... & I think it would look cheezy as hell if they looked like they did back in the day. Let's admit that. BUT there's just certain shit that shouldn't have/ didn't need to change... IMO... Opening night.. we will see.

54705, That's bullshit Posted by Ted Gee Seal, Sun May-20-07 10:50 PM
If he wanted to create something new, he would have called it something like Pretendobots or something. You can't trade on a name and brand and pretend like you have no responsibility to the history behind it all. If you want to do something new and revolutionary, do your own thing apart from it. Don't ruin something for a lot of folks who have an investment in the success of the franchise just because you have an artistic vision you'd like to indulge.
Optimus Prime I could kind of deal with, but the rest of the character designs I've seen are a mess.
If he falls on his face with this he deserves to fall hard.
|
54706, that's WONDERFUL ... in theory Posted by Jon, Mon May-21-07 09:46 AM
in fact, i always had these amazing "revolutionizing-showing-my-own-spin-through-MY-eyes" ideas for if i ever was put in charge of a Voltron movie. and i'm still positive those ideas would kick ass and everyone would love it if i ever had the alternate-life chance to do it.
the problem is...he didn't do something new and original to their looks. he made them MORE generic.
but even though i'm not expecting much of a transformers movie, i AM expecting one hell of a sick ass Giant Robot movie. i'll give him that much, especially after seeing the latest trailer. i'm excited anyway

54715, Right... Posted by auragin_boi, Thu May-24-07 10:29 AM
Jazz in particular is horrid...how can he even walk with those legs?
Everyone says that you can't make them look unrealistic but the new designs for the movie look MORE unrealistic, it's like how could all those damn parts and details even fit into a car? And even then, like transforming cars are real...GTFOH. Let Optimus' tires disappear into his legs or some shit...who cares as long as it looks cool and similar to the history.
I like THIS version much better (the clip above). Even in it, you still see the tires on bumblebee (unlike the 80's cartoon).
The worst thing about the new designs is he took away the faces.
That's kinda how I determined the differences between characters. They all had simpler faces/heads.
Bay's designers fucked up, we all know it if you watched TF's as a kid. But I still think the movie will be entertaining and have a decent plot. I just hope I'm not annoyed at the CGI of the robots movements. If everything is fluent, I'll still enjoy the film, just not as much as I would if the movie looked more like the clip above.
|
54716, It doesn't HAVE a decent plot, though! Posted by JusticeSabre, Thu May-24-07 01:17 PM
That's what I been telling cats! LOL
PLOT IN A NUTSHELL: If the bad guys acquire the MacGuffin, the Earth is doomed. If the good guys acquire the MacGuffin, the Earth is saved. Just so happens, one lone human boy unknowingly has the secret to the location of the MacGuffin and becomes the improbable hero at the end of the film. A lotta shit blows up real good in between.
There goes your $9.50, ock.
|
54717, lol...but that's basically like the cartoon Posted by auragin_boi, Thu May-24-07 03:27 PM
so...who's gonna fuss about it?
We just want the action sequences to be good, along with some semblance of a story to wrap around it.
A transformers MOVIE is just as much about visual pleasure as it is about action/nostalgia.
|

54721, Some are good, some are fucking terrible Posted by McDeezNuts, Thu May-24-07 01:31 PM
The good: 1- My favorite is Optimus Prime - looks dope as shit.
2- Bumblebee looks really cool too.
3- Ironhide looks pretty cool... I honestly don't remember what he used to look like either.
4- Same for Blackout - looks cool, but I don't remember him.
Not sure about: 5- Megatron looks cool, but it's so damn different... for no real reason. It might grow on me but my initial reaction is negative.
The bad: 6- Jazz is fucking lame.
7&8- Starscream and Frenzy look fucking awful. Frenzy is easily the worst of the bunch by far.

54724, again, The Doc must say. His only gripe is the robotic designs. Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Jun-29-07 08:11 PM
not the story/plot not the action not the Michael Bay shit not the fact that Megatron is no longer a gun, Bumblebee is no longer a VW, etc not even the Spielberg + Paramount/Viacom ratings-dodger machine
the robots look like shit.
Beast Wars managed to change the designs up to something more "weird" but keep them somehow still looking like Transformers.
the newer Transformers animated shows...the robots still look like what a Transformer should look like.
But that shit looks like someone took a sledgehammer to a mainframe computer and put wheels on it. That's not even remotely cool.
Not to a Transformers fan, not to a casual fan, maybe to bleary-eyed jabronis who get cheap thrills off things blowing up.
There's a way to not make the robots look cartoonish, but at the same time make them look mainstream-action acceptable, and this isn't it.
Whoever designed those walking piles of asymmetrical crap should have been fired.
