51562, Let's play Good Ending/Bad Ending.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Mar-26-07 03:03 PM
Name a movie with an ending that has critics and apologists. After the movie is named, reply with your vote for good or bad in the title and please explain why you feel that way.

51570, good..until they made it too fucking obvious

Love the movie or hate the movie, the ending was appropriately tied to the rest of the movie. It was a unified meditation on the random interconnectedness (yeah, I just made that up) of the human experience, and the ending ties in very well with the opening montage/prologue. Everyone who looks for an explanation of the ending just overlooked the whole part about shit happening that seems like it should have an explanation but doesn't. So, yeah, I think that movie does what it set out to do and, in that way, works very well.

For those who say the think the movie was good up until the end, I contend that you just didn't get it.

Of course, it's possible to "get it" and still hate the movie.

51579, Bad.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Mar-26-07 05:23 PM
But not because of the frogs. I hated the end because they built up with the prologue this "remarkable coincidence", and then listed these remarkable coincidences. Then, the big coincidence? All of these people who have thin connections between them happened to all witness a frogstorm. Just another people-with-different-storylines-connected-by-a-city movie. Ugh.

but it fit the movie perfectly. The corrupt cop gets his, the thug and the hooker live happily ever after and the opportunist climbs further up the ladder. Sometime I think Bud should have died, but it might have been too depressing. A hero's funeral wouldn't have meant shit since they labeled the crooked chief as a hero.

The little titles about "he went to jail" and "he went on to do yada yada yada" completely ruined the mythos they'd built. It was almost like he'd written THE END in big letters, when the most interesting aspect is what happens after the final scene. Does Mr. Glass get away? How does Bruce Willis deal with this info? What does he do after dealing with Mr. Glass? How do two people who live this way continue for the rest of their lives?

So many great questions, and he tried to answer them with one-sentence epilogue titles. Oy.
51592, So, you like it when they leave shit to your imagination, huh?
Posted by spades, Mon Mar-26-07 06:53 PM
Not me, the end means THE END. I don't want any lingering questions doubts, in my mind that means you didn't tell the story well.

Of course there are SOME exceptions, but it's rare.
51593, It's not about lack of clarity. W/o the titles, it still had an end.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Mar-26-07 07:28 PM
But with the titles, it was like summing up for us a very boring story that occurred after the story we just witnessed. I'd like to think there are stories that these characters have after the film ended.
51594, very good

and in the minority but i hated the shit. maybe it's cuz i was going in expecting straight up mobster goodness a la goodfellas, but the whole parody aspect was just lame to me throughout. and the ending made it even worse.

i think i'm just mad cuz i keep thinking about the film this could have been, which isn't really fair, but considering the resources marty had available to him, i just don't get why he went in this directon.

for example, i think mystic river is a way better picture ( i picked it cuz it's also a cop thing and also in boston), and not to underappreciate kevin bacon, sean penn, and tim robbins, but with damon, dicaprio, nicholson, martin sheen, wahlberg, and alec baldwin, i dont know. i just wanted more.

51634, Bad..

made sense, rhymed with the theme

made me feel like shit

edit: i feel i should elaborate with this one.

one of the major things people criticize is that it dragged on way too long...i emphatically disagree. to me, all that dragging-out was part of the experience.

the part that bothered me immensely, was how they sort-of "brought back" his mother at the end, but he'd only get to spend one day with her, and it ends with him snuggling with her at night (as she'll be gone FOREVER tomorrow)

that made me feel awful

but the fact that they presented this part as a fairy-tale happy-ending (when you knew it must suck tomorrow, but temporarily, there's happiness) served as the perfect punctuation on the whole "artificial" theme of the film. and they did it well, with the narrator, music, and teddy bear climbing into bed at the end...perfect form....and you KNEW the shit wasn't a REAL happy ending. just the best they could manufacture.
51659, If they'd left him frozen in ice for all eternity, good. But instead...

Emotionally and gut-wise, I think it's a good ending. The final image of Karol Karol is effin' iconic to me. Beautiful. It should be a mainstay of classic film moments montages.

When I think about it, I don't really like the ending...maybe because I don't like the movie from the point ****spoiler**** of his funeral and beyond ****spoiler end*****. But, yet, I see the point to the film's story.

I definitely think the trilogy would be no less great without Red's ending, but taking into account Kieslowski's metaphysical and fate angle (like in the wonderful Blind Chance and semi-wonderful Double Life)...it so works for me.

First viewing, I was like, "Oh shit!."

I'm trying to remember the ending . . . i dont know if it was that scene where they just shared breakfast like theyre a couple.

If so, then yeah it was a bad ending. But overall, very good film.

51857, *SPOILER*

(probably not necessary in an "Endings" thread, but just to be safe)

It ends with him messing up the interrupting cow joke, then she just says "that's horrible".

It was really abrupt, but in a way there was no realistic way to end it. He's a drug addict, she's accepting of him, nothing looks like it's gonna change.
