51509, when are these fools gonna realize russell crowe is garbage
Posted by filmgeek, Fri Mar-02-07 03:12 AM
the man cant act. hes not a star. he has no gravitas. hes flat and lifeless. some spoiled aussie.

hes starring in american gangster. they should have cast anyone but him.
51510, who's your favourite actor?

"antipodean actor" maybe, cos he doesn't really live here at all. but still.
51514, Gladiator vs. Kingdom of Heaven
Posted by Arch Stanton, Fri Mar-02-07 11:12 AM
Gladiator was awesome for the same reason that KOH wasn't, it had a commanding lead actor to carry the film.
51515, I'm taking Kingdom of Heaven

> Gladiator was awesome for the same reason that KOH wasn't,
>it had a commanding lead actor to carry the film.

Overall the cast of Kingdom of Heaven>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Gladiator's cast. I normally can't stand Bloom but I thought he was perfect in KOH. Crowe was better & it's been awhile since I've seen Gladiator. I had low expectations for KOH but it ended up being a great movie. Gladiator might've had the better action but the KOH story was better imo.
51516, Gladiator's cast wasn't exactly shit
Posted by Arch Stanton, Fri Mar-02-07 03:24 PM
Besides, in KOH they killed off the interesting people too fast. Liam Neeson was badass, he lasted about 5 minutes. Ed Norton as the leper king, lasted like 10 min.
How can you be satisfied with Orlando Bloom's performance? He goes from widower to outlaw to potential heir-to-the-throne to a tactical genius without changing facial expression. The transition was so major and fast that it would have been hard for a really talented actor to pull off, let alone him.
That said, I really like KOH, and I thought it had potential to be great. The story and characters are far more interesting than Gladiator. But I thought it fell short, largely because of Bloom.
51517, Never said it was. Just enjoyed KOH's better overall

There's still:

Eva Green
David Thewlis
Marton Csokas
Alexander Siddig
Brendan Gleeson
Jeremy Irons

I wasn't expecting much from Bloom here. But he fits in well in these type of roles & seemed born to play this one. He was much better here than he was in Troy or anything else I've seen him in. Everything else in the movie is so good that it would take a terrible performance to ruin it & he managed to avoid that & be quite good at times as well. Similar to Keanu Reeves in The Matrix. There was so much else goin on that I enjoyed. it allowed me to overlook the fact that main actor is someone I usually don't enjoy.
51518, I agree
Posted by Arch Stanton, Wed Mar-07-07 12:35 PM
Bloom didn't wreck the movie. I just can't help thinking how great it would have been with a proper actor in his place.

Fair enough. Who would you cast in that role instead?
51520, From just British and Aussie actors...
Posted by Arch Stanton, Wed Mar-07-07 05:47 PM
Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger, Guy Pearce, Clive Owen.
51521, Maybe since I've already seen Bloom in the role
Posted by jigga, Wed Mar-07-07 06:42 PM
> Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger, Guy Pearce, Clive Owen.

All those cats sans Heath seem to old. And Heath was 1 of my least favorite actors in the past & looked silly to me from the few clips I saw of him in A Knights Tale. But I did enjoy what he did in The Brothers Grimm so perhaps he would've been better. As it stands I had no problem w/ Bloom as Balian.

I'm no crowe fan, but if you can't see how well he held it down in the Insider or LA Confidential, shit, even A Beautiful Mind(even though that joint was poop)then you're operating off pure unadulterated hate...

i thought he sucked in that. ill give you LA confidential. he was okay. but with that kind of direction anyone woulda killed it. personally i think hugh jackman is a far better actor than crowe.

actually on second thought he wasnt that great in LA confidential. imagine what say daniel day lewis woulda done with that movie(not that he would ever be in that movie). shit i even think bruce willis woulda done a better job. if you wanna see someone kill a noir piece watch gabriel byrne in millers crossing.

and if you havent seen millers crossing jigga you need to gtfooh telling me to remove film.
51533, I think you've been blinded by a bias

^^^Pleas copped & totally false

personally i think hugh jackman is a far better actor than
>crowe.

Hugh's showing his chops recently in films like The Prestige & The Fountain. He's come a loooooooooooong way from Swordfish. And yes he plays Wolverine to a T but he aint reached Crowe's level yet.

>actually on second thought he wasnt that great in LA
>confidential.

On 3rd thought go watch it again & put the bias aside.

imagine what say daniel day lewis woulda done
>with that movie(not that he would ever be in that movie). shit
>i even think bruce willis woulda done a better job.

You're trippin if you feel there was any need to replace Crowe w/ any other actor as Bud White. I try to imagine Hugh, Daniel Day Lewis, or Bruce Willis as Bud it's just not clickin. None of em are improving on anything that Crowe did w/ that role. Watch it again & you might realize this. You should've went with your 1st instinct when you said, "ill give you LA confidential"

if you
>wanna see someone kill a noir piece watch gabriel byrne in
>millers crossing.

>and if you havent seen millers crossing jigga you need to
>gtfooh telling me to remove film.

Gabriel Byrne in Millers crossing is right up there w/ Crowe in Confidential. 2 of my favorite performances of all time, noir or not. Byrne kills it in Usual Suspects as well. Guy Pearce kills it in Memento & L.A. Cofidential along w/ Crowe. Fred MacMurray slaughtered Double Indemnity. Humprey Bogart nailed The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon & any other noir piece he touched. I enjoyed what Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke & especially Clive Owen did in Sin City. There's been plenty of great noir performances. But none of them take anything away from what Crowe did as Bud White.
51534, RE: I think you've been blinded by a bias
Posted by filmgeek, Tue Mar-06-07 07:02 PM
i do not know man. do you believe that crowe in LA was the greatest noir performance of all time?

51535, No. He's saying the greatest noir performances of all time
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Mar-07-07 12:47 PM
don't knock down the quality of Crowe's performance just because the others are better. There can be many, many great performances in one genre.
51536, RE: I think you've been blinded by a bias

>i do not know man. do you believe that crowe in LA was the
>greatest noir performance of all time?

Not necessarily the greastest of all time but it was a helluva performance & certainly 1 of my favorite performances of all time noir or not.

It's not just the tough guy stuff either. It's the way he was able to sell both that, & the sentimental side that Veronica brought out in him. He showed great range. For example, the scene where he's lying in bed w/ her & explains why he doesn't put up w/ women beaters. As well has when initialy he assumes he's not smart enough to solve the Nite Owl case because he's just hired muscle but soon realizes that's not the case. Add to that the look on his face when he's @ her door & confronts her about sleeping w/ Exley & I'm still astonished Kim Basinger is the one the Academy nominated. Crowe & Pearce clearly did the best work & carried the movie imo.

Gladiator is the last movie I saw him in where I felt the role suited his skills best. Since he'll be working with Ridley Scott again in American Gangster I'm expecting Crowe at his best in that one as well
