49628, Movie lines that impacted your way of approaching life...
Posted by FireBrand, Fri Nov-11-05 09:24 PM
I'm talking about some shit that sounded so profound at the time that u was like, word. that's how it is:

"Prayer is something we do on our time, Answers come in God's Time," RUDY.

"The truth is, you can never tell yourself there is only one thing you could be. If your a priest, or if you marry a woman, it's the same challenge. you cannot make a real committment unless you accept
it's a choice that you make again, again, and again. I've been a priest at least 40 years and I've fallen in love each decade." KEEPING THE FAITH.

"There is only one womanin the world...she just has different faces"

It's fucked up, and kinda warped, but sometimes you gotta look at things like that to ease the pain. I thought it was REAL ill that, as Lucifer, trying to mend Jesus' emotional wounds, he was trying to ease his pain and fuck his head up at the same time. I always thought it was a warped lesson in life, but it showed the human contradiction that sometimes the messed up view we give ourselves in denial is the best medicine.

Oh and the Bruce Lee interview on the Enter the Dragon dvd is dope. He talks about the power of water and be like it. I can't do what he said justice, just watch it. For me profound words from a master.

"Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless--like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash! Be water my friend."

I copied that from a text sometime ago. I really liked this quote as well, I remember there being something about water can be soft, or it can pierce rock. But I may have got that from somethin else.

More Bruce Lee:

"If you love life, don't waste time, for time is what life is made up of."

"A good teacher protects his pupils from his own influence."

but the section of Kipling's "The Conundrum of the Workshops" that Orson reads in "F for Fake" still shakes me whenever I hear it:

When the flush of a newborn sun fell first on Eden's green and gold,
Our father Adam sat under the Tree and scratched with a stick in the mold;
And the first rude sketch that the world had seen was joy to his mighty heart,
Till the Devil whispered behind the leaves: "It's pretty, but is it Art?"

Posted by SURA, Sun Nov-13-05 03:58 PM
There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you still get the same soaking. This understanding extends to everything.

"Should I bolt every time I get that feeling in my gut when I meet someone new? Well, I've been listening to my gut since I was 14 years old, and frankly speaking, I've come to the conclusion that my guts have shit for brains."

or

"I can see now I never really committed to Laura. I always had one foot out the door, and that prevented me from doing a lot of things, like thinking about my future and... I guess it made more sense to commit to nothing, keep my options open. And that's suicide. By tiny, tiny increments."

but definitely this:

"The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. Anyway... I've started to make a tape... in my head... for Laura. Full of stuff she likes. Full of stuff that make her happy. For the first time I can sort of see how that is done."

I should go watch this instead of studying right now.

49691, Bottle Rocket
Posted by Cork, Tue Nov-15-05 11:50 AM

I definitely use quotes from Bottle Rocket throughout my life. There is so much little stuff in that movie I apply to everyday situations. Probably my favorite is:

Dignan: What are you doing here? You guys always go to lunch right now.
Worker: Not always...
Dignan: Yes! ALWAYS!!

That just knee-jerk comes up for me whenever I'm obviously proved wrong about something yet I refuse to admit it. There's something about that character, something Anthony touches on in the movie, something about Dignan's eternal optimism that inspires me. So maybe the particular lines aren't life impacting, but the way they're delivered, and who by, are extremely heartfelt. Another one that I catch myself popping off is like when I'm trying to convince someone, like talk something up about something, I catch Dignan's words creeping in:

Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers - can you see how incredible this is going to be? - hang gliding, come on!
49692, Does the fact that I'm trying to do it do it for you?
Posted by hype_phb, Tue Nov-15-05 02:10 PM
I love that movie. It's got so many good lines.

49693, How does an asshole like Bob get such a nice kitchen?
Posted by Cork, Tue Nov-15-05 02:15 PM

Yes, I love that film.

Why do you have tape on your nose?
EXACTLY!!!
49694, You know, I've been through some shit...
Posted by hype_phb, Tue Nov-15-05 02:34 PM
When you feel like nobody cares, nobody gives a shit man...

The best part is when he runs the stop sign during that whole monologue-
49695, YES!!!
Posted by Cork, Tue Nov-15-05 02:51 PM

When he runs that stop sign and Anthony, in the back, just laments it like its that very last thing he needs right now. I also love the way Dignan is just eyeing Bob the whole time like hes the biggest horse's ass on Earth.

Another fave is this part:

Dignan: Bob Mapplethorpe, potential get-away driver: go!
Bob: Well, I think there's a real air of mystery about me.
Dignan: Don't complicate it. Your number one strength is you have a car you can provide. Sell yourself! Start over. Ready, go!
Bob: Okay, alright. I'm a risk taker! I'm growin' an entire crop of marijuana plants in my parents back yard! I think that shows...
Dignan: Wait, you're growing an entire crop of marijuana in your back yard?
Bob: Dignan, look. I'm just not very good at this selling-yourself stuff, okay? So, I'm just gonna tell you the truth. I really wanna be a part of this team. And I'm the only one with a car.
Dignan: That's good. That's good. 'Cause that hits me right here. (points to heart)

But the one I use to sum up to people what the humor of the film is like is:

"You know there's nothing to steal from my mom and Craig!!"

Just some intelligent, sensitive, and frustrated young men who for some reason want desparately to have some sort of crime caper adventure.
49696, The ultimate moment in the movie for me-
Posted by hype_phb, Tue Nov-15-05 02:57 PM
Is when Dignan's morosely shooting off fireworks in the field and Anthony comes to talk to him with Inez. He throws the roman candle down and then you hear it shoot off one last time, and Dignan gives this look of saddened suprise that just makes me laugh my ass off....

but yeah, so many good lines in that one.
