42543, Where In the World is Carmen Sandiego? Appreciation Post
Posted by buckshot defunct, Wed Sep-14-05 05:47 PM
DISCLAIMER: If you read that title and the first thing you thought of was computer games, leave this post and carry your ass to Hi-Tech. No offense, the game was great and all. But this is not for you.

However!

If you read that title and the first thing you thought of was Chief Lynn Thigpen (RIP), Lightning Rounds, and ROCKAPELLA, then congratulations, gumshoe. Your youth was well spent.

What a great show.

Parents...teachers... young at heart- is there anything like this in today's children's programming? It was fun, it was competitive, and it somehow managed to make geography seem cool... I so desperately wanted to be on that show even though my Geography skills were incredibly weak. I knew I'd sure as shit never stand a chance during that last round, where you had to place red markers over the countries that corresponded with the given clues... And if the marker didn't light up, you were totally screwed! At times this show was almost too much to watch (In fact, IMDB claims that one episode went unaired because during said round, a kid fell and broke his arm. Or maybe it said he died. I forgot. Either way--- Intense!!)

So there you have it. One of the greatest kids' TV shows of all time. One of the greatest game shows of all time. Two great tastes that tasted great together.

APPRECIATE!!!
APPRECIATE!!!
ROCKAPELLA!!!

42573, there were two main latino cast members
Posted by Harmonia, Sun Sep-11-05 09:56 PM
There was David Lopez who was an original cast member and was on the show throughout its duration. He's Colombian and I believe that's who the poster is referring to.

Then there was Willie who was on the show the last few seasons and was also the gay cast member on the Real World. He's Puerto Rican.
42574, Haha yeah I wasn't referring to Willie...I didn't even know there
Posted by Mica, Sun Sep-11-05 10:26 PM
were different Alexes....

Damn, two Gabbys, two Alexes, that family had issues.
42575, two Alexes?
Posted by Harmonia, Mon Sep-12-05 09:14 PM
David Lopez was the only actor to play Alex.

Where in the world is San Diego, California?

After the first question, Rockapella sang the answer before the contestants had a chance to answer, and the host got all pissed

After the second question, the dude buzzed in, and was like "uh, i don't know that, but San Diego is on the Claifornia Coast, about 90 miles south of Los Angeles."

They were all like "shit!" changed the game to "Where in the World is Baltimore, Maryland" and everybody sat around dumbfounded. I remember sitting in my house (I'm from Baltimore), and feeling pround for some strange reason.

that shit was too funny.

42598, A Carmen Sandiego movie would be the shit
Posted by THEdirtyone, Sun Sep-11-05 07:36 AM
I was thinking about that a couple of weeks ago. It practically writes itself....

42609, Rockapella are alums of my college
Posted by johnny_domino, Sun Sep-11-05 11:42 PM
or at least some of them are. They played a concert for parents and students at senior week, I showed up just in time for the encore, where they made the audience yell "Do it Rockapella!", and we were all too happy to oblige.

It was a pretty good show. I liked the way they'd sing "The Warrant". That last round was hellish, I was pretty decent at geography but I would've been crushed having to run around an upside-down floor map.
42610, Yeah but those kids were ridiculous
Posted by magilla vanilla, Mon Sep-12-05 10:39 AM
