Hands fucking down. Just came from a screening of this joint. It's funny as hell. Great performances from everyone involved. I recommend everyone see it.
42392, Been tryin 2 see this 4 awhile now

Hopefully next Thursday. Does Alan Arkin steal the show?
42393, Alan Arkin does steal the show at times.

But all the actors shine equally and have their moments. Carrell fans won't be disappointed.
42394, Nah, son, it's all about Abigail Breslin.

42399, BillyOcean's nearly on point. The film was very, very good.
Posted by ZooTown74, Fri Jul-21-06 01:44 AM
Emotionally, it hits all the right notes and is quite funny.

It's another 'independent-road trip-with-a-fucked-up-family-movie." The family in question (led by Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette) load up the family in the VW Bus to head to Redondo Beach, all so their daughter can participate in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant.

I had a little trouble with more than a few of the "coincidental" plot turns, but I let them go, simply because the movie's not just about "will they get her to the pageant?" I'm recommending this jawn for the comedy. I thought Michael Arndt's script was perfectly sour without being needlessly dark, and I appreciated that. There's a lot of heart in the movie that I appreciated.

I'm also recommending the movie because of the fine performances. I'm sure everyone wants to know how Steve Carell was, and I'll say that he gave a fine, modulated comic performance. No loud and wild Michael Scott-isms or behaviors. Greg Kinnear played his usual asshole role to a T. Toni Collette was in fine frazzled form. Paul Dano, well, he did a nice job of scowling and looking like a typical 16-year old rebel without a clue. Alan Arkin nearly stole the movie with his performance. I say, nearly. Some will argue that he's just playing one-note, and that's fine, but I thought he gave the film its free-wheeling spirit. His character is the goofily perverted soul of the movie.

Some of you will be "annoyed" with the little girl who plays Olive, Abigail Breslin. Fuck you. No, seriously, keep your cynical, unfeeling, child-hating asses at home. Abigail Breslin was adorable without being cloying, if that's possible (and I'm saying right now that it is). And there's a shot near the end where she doesn't say a word and ends up earning one of the biggest laughs in the movie. She's unquestionably the star of this thing, and if I had anything to do with it, she'd get an Oscar as of this point in time. Yeah, I said it. Oh, and fuck Dakota Fanning, while you're at it.

Looks like I have to send those damn AMC Theatre people another email. Because at certain moments, such as one particular shot with Olive and her big brother (you'll know it when you see it), it seemed like the allergens in the air were infiltrating the auditorium, because I kept tearing up. Dammit!

On the black hand side, sadly, there was only one Asiatic goddess (peace, queens) in the flick. She rolled her neck about 12 times, I counted, yo. Oh, and she also committed the sin of saying "Ain't." I hope they revoke her SAG card, fuckin' sellout. But the good news is, Rick James got paid again, y'all!

Techinically, it's solid (I always say that). Lots of great shots of the clan-- er, family (peace, gods) in various stages of emotional duress. Didn't feature any of the usual camera tricks normally associated with Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (the DP was Tim Suhrstedt).

Oh, and I'm sure there might be a little "controversy" about a certain third act sequence, but I just have to say that any complaints about that sequence completely miss the point of it. So let me present the *WHOOOSH* in advance.

I see why Fox Searchlight paid $10.5 large. Hell, I would have too. This joint deserves to be seen. Don't go in expecting a great indie masterpiece of plotting and action, see it for the comedy and the performances.

Highly, highly recommended.

Her saying grandad was in the trunk, both ice cream-related scenes, giving big brother a hug, and the walking down the hill / embankment thing were very well done. I don't see how anyone could hate on her.

The dancing? yeah, I could see people's beef with it, but I was sold already (as opposed to the similar moment in About A Boy which didn't get the same pass from me).

And, like someone else already said, the old people (all) around me were really digging it too. So it should surely have its "multi-generational appeal."

It's sick, the way they make up those little girls to look like grown women. One of them even looked like Janet Jackson to me.

The swimsuit competition was the worst. *shudders*

What was up with the biker-looking guy in the audience? Was he a pedophile?

Who was really not into the 'scene'

But yeah... baby pageants = nightmare fuel.

I remember being hard up for some freelancing design work at one point, and I did some identity/brochure work for one of those things. Or at least, I was hired to. About a week or so later it was like 'thanks, but I'd rather starve'

Those people are whacked.
42416, Yeah, could be.
Posted by kurlyswirl, Wed Oct-11-06 12:36 AM
>Who was really not into the 'scene'

What made me suspect he was a pedo was, when Richard asked him which of the girls was his (or something to that effect), he replied "This must be your first time." Like, if Richard has been there before, he'd know that creepy guys come to pageants. But I suppose he could've also meant, if Richard had been to other pageants, he would know who the guy's daughter is (maybe because she wins a lot). *shrug*

See, to me it was more of a response to Richard's wide-eyed attitude. You notice that none of the other parents were interacting with one another, they were just mostly fixated on the competition. You could tell by the way Richard was acting that he was new to that whole world. So 'this must be your first time' seemed like a cautionary thing. Like 'you have no idea what you're getting yourself into'.

I mean, the dude had headphones on. Not like he was into it.
42418, Okay, that makes sense.
Posted by kurlyswirl, Wed Oct-11-06 10:51 AM
Thanks. The whole creepy pageant situation made me read into it too much, I guess.

it doesn't break any newground by any means, following the tried and true dysfunctional family road movie formula but it does so with great spirit and characterization. the performances are wonderful, especially toni collette and abigail breslin. i had my qualms about another cute kid role, but i gotta admit: she was great. alan arkin looked like he was having a blast and so did greg kinnear. did anybody else thikn the son looked like a young-ass cameron crowe?

i was surprised that dayton/faris didn't have any of their camera tricks, but the movie looked great w/o music video excess & flash. anybody else notice their little nod to the smashing pumpkins? (the price at the gas station was $19.79)

and whats up with the head judge of the pageant? it seems like that woman has a monopoly on the uptight beauty pageant judge role

42426, very good movie. near a 3.5/4
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Sun Aug-13-06 04:27 PM
I laughed out loud, along with the whole theater, a lot.

Only real complaints: The whole body-stealing thing seemed like a real big stretch at first, absurd almost, but they made it work as the movie went on . . . Also, Frank running into his ex-student / crush at the convenience store was a stretch and really not needed (looking at old pictures and seeing his rival's ad in the paper would have satisfied that side of the story enough). . . . Greg Kinnear's character was a little one-dimensional and obvious for the first 3/4, but, basically from the pageant on, he changed the entire tone of his demeanor and I bought it.

Otherwise, it all worked for me. . . . Great cast. I wonder how many movies Toni Collette has had stolen by either Julianne Moore or Laura Linney, because she certainly should be in their A-list category. . . . Steve Carrell keeps making all the right career choices . . . Good use of music . . . Entire film was well photographed, more understated than anything, and there were a number of great shots, mostly involving the car (it to the right with Dwayne doing pushups to the back and left / the two-tier freeway structure / stopped by the embankment as Dwayne runs down, etc.) . . . I thought the running gags of the notepad and starting the car (pardon the pun) might get tired, but they never felt overdone, which showed restraint but also the directors' / writer's ability to put news spins on the concepts. . . . Olive could be the 2006 Bee Girl. . . . The first pushing-the-bus scene could be a classic.

Overall, it felt like a Todd Solondz movie without all the creepiness and overpowering sense of bleakness. Comedic scenes were successful, dramatic moments were handled appropriately and felt believable.

Side question: anyone know why Chloe from 24 and dude from Suddenly Susan popped up in mini-cameos?
42427, RE: very good movie. near a 3.5/4

FWIW, this film was shot after Steve Carell had just finished The 40-Year Old Virgin, so I'm not sure that Mary Lynn Rajskub was that famous yet. Chloe had yet to become CHLOE.

First off, this was a great film. Story, acting, direction....everything was worth the $10 ticket price.

Secondly, it was me, my brother and his girlfriend, we're like 22 yrs old. When the movie was over, and the lights dimmed out little, I saw nothing but OLD PEOPLE! I was like WTH?

These were the people laughing at everything I was laughing at and then some. That brought a smile on my face, knowing that this movie actually connected people. Also, it was a mixture of old people, not like old white people...different people.

But yea, I Love this movie, and like what some else said, Steve Carell hasn't miss ONCE.

Bring in Evan Almighty & Get Smart please. Dude unstoppable right now.

Although some of the 'coincidences' were a bit forced, and some of the storylines kinda cheesy, I had a smile on my face from start to finish. GREAT cast, the writing was incredible imo, they didnt play too much on any of the gags(like the older brothers notepad) and make it stale, and Carell continues to impress and make amazing career decisions.

i liked it. it was funny, but naturally so, and not "artsy"/ pretentious like i was expecting (when you've got sufjan playing in your trailer, a red flag goes up). all the characters were great, and this is defnitely one of the better new movies i've seen in a while.

the crowd in the theater was real diverse, too. with a movie like this (sundance cred, critical acclaim, and again, sufjan providing the soundtrack (does anyone know if that was his work throughout the whole movie? i recognized chicago, but none of the other pieces.) i was expecting a younger, art-film audience. but there were a lot of older people, actually. the theater we went to is also brand new and pretty big, and they had 2 theaters dedicated to the movie at 2 in the afternoon, and one was sold out. but the crowd was real into it, and everyone enjoyed it.

go see it.

I liked Alan Arkin's character less the second time around, and the "fuck as many girls as you can" speech really seems out of place. But "you should be getting that young stuff" is a funny line.

The moment when Olive walks down the hill to put her arm around her brother probably became my favorite.

And I'll maintain my point about the framing / photography being great.

But I just gotta echo the positive sentiments here.

Great performances all around. I thought Arkin was a real scene stealer and Carrel did a good job with a slightly more subdued performance than he's used to.

Someone described the script as hacky - It was probably the hackiest element of the film, but still not all that hacky, really. Now, that whole 'uh-oh, looks like EVERYBODY has to go on a road trip' set up was transparent, but by that time the cast had gotten the ball rolling so much that I didn't care. If anything, I was delighted in the lack of pretense. And movies that end in big dance numbers generally *should* be hacky, but this is an exception to the rule.

And speaking of that dance scene, I thought the whole Rick James faux-striptease worked out brilliantly. Sort of reminded me of 'Me and You and Everyone We Know,' where conventional logic tells us it should be appalling, but somehow, it isn't at all. Those beauty pageants are like the most pervese things on earth, but that scene was just bursting with innocence.

In general I just liked it a lot. Lots of laughs. On a number of occasions I was short of breath. A fun R-rated family comedy.

Thumbs up.

I alternately laughed till I cried and cried till I cried a couple of times in this one. The acting and direction were extremely solid all around, and it is so refreshing to see a film with a major character who's a little kid that doesn't make you cringe every time they deliver a line. The whole theater erupted with laughter at a constant clip and there were many times where you could hear just a couple of people cracking up at specific moments. Wasn't really a "smirk to yourself" movie, pretty much all or nothing. Alarn Arkin is so criminally underrated and good at everything he does that sometimes I find myself weeping openly about it. Not really. But dammit the man is great.

At first I shook my head at the tremendous leaps of logic the film forces you to make, the contrivances and the "nobody would ever do that" scenes, kinda feeling a little distracted by them. The film overcame that for the most part, however, by delivering on those premises and subtly wringing varying emotions from them. The only one that truly sticks out and took me out of my enjoyment was Frank telling the kid what being color blind would ultimately mean. First of all, the set-up was contrived via the Hubble, and secondly...well..."NOBODY WOULD EVER DO THAT". You would think the world's most respected Proust scholar would have brains enough to hold back on that info until a more convenient time. Especially since he's so recently had HIS OWN dream shattered.

Favorite part...the cop really getting creepy nasty going over the porn and being suggestive, and Greg Kinnear, who is alternately completely disgusted by what's going on as well as being nervously amazed he's not going to prison, tries to play along, "...oh that's the sweet sweetness right there...".

I caught the Stan Grossman name, missed the Pumpkins reference, and thought Mary-Lynn Rakjshjsjnjfb was probably in it because the directors had worked on the 4th season of Mr. Show. True, Mary-Lynn was gone by then but I figure they're probably buddypals anyway.

Now for me, that part was the biggest leap of logic

42459, Very good flick...

I agree with most of what's been said. What stood out to me was the fact that it got its point across very well without being too incredibly heavy-handed.

It was an excellent movie. I have not laughed so hard in a long time.

The grandfather dying was totally unexpected.

I fest really bad for the son, when he found out he could not become a pilot.
42461, Brilliant movie...

Truth be told I only went to see this film for entirely the wrong reasons (was the only film on at that time in the cinema...) and prior to actually going in 2 see it, had absolutely no intention of checking it out (having read no reviews or seen any press, and only knowing it had 'an annoying little girl' in it)... Basically it was a film I would otherwise never have seen, that I ended up watching by chance.

But the film was great. The best way I can think of describing it is to say it had heart. Could've been the most contrived and corny piece of crap, but the cast pulled it together... as people have already said, the coincidences are easily ignored, it's just a plain good film.

Definately worth watching. And that lil' girl barely annoyed me at all.

if that girl annoyed you, you suck at life (directed at those who found her annoying).
42463, It's really good, but I had a reservation.

This movie was very well-acted, no doubt about it. And the story and dialogue are all very likable and they get their laughs.

My only problem is with not this movie in particular, but many movies that attempt to blend tragedy and comedy using sitcom character. Blending tragedy and comedy is cool, but when it's done with sitcom characters, there's always this limit as to how affecting the film can be.

It's the same problem I have with many other movies that I file under this category, such as Terms of Endearment. They're nice enjoyable fun movies, and they don't really offend anyone, so I can't complain. But there's a limit to their greatness due to the limitations of the characters.

The reason why some of these movies persevere and turn out so successful (Terms of Endearment, Little Miss Sunshine, others) is due to the amount that the actors put into it. A sitcom tragicomedy film is only as successful as the actors in it, and Little Miss Sunshine had some great ones. Steve Carell continues to plow forward with his success, Toni Collette never fails to bring heart to any character she plays no matter how small, and I thought Abigal Breslin was absolutely delightful and brought a truth to her role that few child actors can do.

I just found myself thinking afterwards why it didn't hit me as deep as other tragicomedies have. Then I thought it's probably because there's the "success-driven dad who learns a lesson about family," and the "horny old grandpa," and the "depressed son who hates his family who learns to love them," and the like. Granted, these characters exist in real life, but they're so tried and true that unless these characters have real meat on their bones, they don't truly resonate with us afterward-- they have the effect of a comfort food.

SO in conclusion, I agree with the sentiment that this is easily one of the best movies we've seen all year. It was an absolute joy to watch actors have fun with this dialogue and these characters. But this also really makes me yearn for the independent cinema that takes big risks, that forces me to either love or hate it. This was probably the safest "indie comedy" I've ever seen, and while you can't fault it for that, you can wonder what's going on with moviegoers when this is the only breakout small film of the year. Does this show (a) that moviegoers are showing more and more of a predilection towards safe, mainstream fare? (b) there is a noticeable lack of well-done edgy cinema this year, a year when even Oliver Stone played it as safe as can be? (c) a combination of both?

I was just wondering your thoughts on all of this. I really did enjoy the movie, and I hope this rambling dissertation on the state of cinema didn't somehow mute that point.

i thought that even tho the character types were stereoypical the plot hit me pretty deep...like when dwayne freaks out at being color blind...he was so committed to that and it all came crashing down in front of him, and then when he finally talks u can learn a little more about his character

but the scene where they leave her at the gas station...man...when they pull back in and she just nods her head and smiles lol! and then has to run into the car...what a great movie

As far as the indie breakout thing, I dunno -- I think it's a function of Sundance being taken over by the major studios. They might screen a whole number of good movies there, but the studios are only picking the "quirky" and "offbeat" ones that they know will still hit big with a larger audience. In turn, aspiring movie makers want to sell their movie at Sundance, so they're less likely to take all the chances they might want to.

It could also be a product of the audience, I don't know, but it just seems impossible to discount how movies get marketed every summer as "the talk of Sundance" which really just means a studio bidding war went on for it.
42466, this WAS the best (new) movie I'd seen all year

But then The Departed came out.

So I'm good. 2006 is cool with me.
42467, I *finally* saw it last night.

My friend and I had been planning to see it for over a month and finally got our shit together.

I think our audience was fairly diverse, agewise. I think I was the only non-white person there, though. lol

It was my friend's second time seeing it and she was probably laughing the hardest of anyone in the theatre. Says a lot about its replay value.

I thought Olive was adorable and Abigail Breslin most definitely deserves an Oscar nod. I can't believe anyone would find her annoying!

Despite its flaws, I loved it. I really don't have anything else to add to the insightful comments already posted.

Couldn't have caught a better double feature if I'd tried.

I really like this movie a lot. The last half-hour is what sent that movie above just being a passable dysfunctional family comedy and into something memorable.

And seeing The Departed afterward really capped it all off.
