41386, Movies you would've had to seen as a kid to appreciate now
Posted by Rockabye, Wed Nov-02-05 04:34 PM
Movies like The Goonies and Lost Boys, Just One of the Guys come to mind.

I ask this because i get alil upset when certain people say some of these movies suck or are just "ok", and i know it's because they never saw them as kids.

What are some others?
41387, Mary Poppins
Posted by kurlyswirl, Wed Nov-02-05 04:41 PM
I watched it for the first time with the fam last year around Christmas and I kept dozing off. I gave up about 2/3 into it. I think part of it is, now that I'm grown up, I don't really care for musicals (with a few exceptions). Loved 'em as a kid, tho'.

I never really saw it all the way through until I was about 16 or 18. It's a great idea: use your computer to build a super model who wants to hang out with you. I imagine that would appeal to all men across all age groups.

only if you were the only kid in America who didnt watch the show. All in all it's still a "cartoon" movie and if you like anime you should like this film no matter what.

And of course since I live with a lil cousin i had to pass on the legacy. He was AMAZED when he say Megatron transform into a gun and merk them on the ship.

It's a shame they dont make em like they use to for these kids
41394, better believe it
Posted by The Alchemist, Sat Nov-12-05 10:55 PM
probably one of the only cartoon series where characters actually died... this movie was real heavy emotionally... tell me you didn't feel SOMETHING after seeing Optimus turn gray and tilt his head and die...

I'm guessing The Princess Bride
41396, well actually...
Posted by cskncream, Wed Nov-02-05 08:13 PM
I saw that for the first time when I was in college. It remains one of my favorites to this day. Most of my friends that like this movie didn't see it until they were older as well and love it too.

That's just us though.
41397, I knew someone would say Princess Bride
Posted by mc_delta_t, Wed Nov-02-05 08:40 PM
but that is such a well written/acted/directed movie that anyone should be able to appreciate it

1 of those flicks I've never tried watching from the start. But every time I tune in I lose interest quickly. Velveeta factor perhaps.
41399, Episodes I, II, & III
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Nov-02-05 05:47 PM
I still maintain if I saw those when I was 7 years old, I'd like them just as much as IV through VI.
41400, I dunno
Posted by johnny_domino, Wed Nov-02-05 05:55 PM
special effects being equal? 4 through 6 have a clear story and dialogue advantage, to my mind. The whole Anakin/Padme romance angle is wretch-inducing. And Jar Jar more than cancels out the Ewoks.
41401, Buckaroo Banzai
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Nov-02-05 05:48 PM
Funny as hell for the quotes and the campiness, but really not as good of a movie as I thought it was when I was nine.
41402, ha, I remember that one
Posted by johnny_domino, Wed Nov-02-05 05:57 PM
but all I really remember is John Bigboote, who kept getting his name mispronounced.

I remember it seeming similar to The Last Starfighter, which I also liked but thought was pretty weird.
41403, Willy Wonka: Gene Wilder version
Posted by johnny_domino, Wed Nov-02-05 05:50 PM
I enjoyed it only because it was funny to watch my roommate, a glowering, taciturn linebacker, sing along to all the songs with childish glee. Well that and the oompa-loompas.
41404, WRONG. Still fucking classic.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-02-05 07:46 PM
41405, how old were you when you first saw it?
Posted by johnny_domino, Wed Nov-02-05 08:10 PM
41406, Prolly in my teens, somethin like that.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-02-05 08:28 PM
Not sure, I don't remember. But I saw it right after I saw the new one, and I realized that absolutely EVERYTHING about the Wilder version is better. Literally everything.

Mostly because Gene Wilder is an absolute genius.
41407, I haven't seen the new one yet
Posted by johnny_domino, Wed Nov-02-05 09:45 PM
and I like Gene Wilder a lot, or at least in those Mel Brooks comedies I do.

But I had read both books as a kid, multiple times, and was really disappointed when I saw it, that they turned it into a musical. And it's been a long time since I read either of the books, but I felt the movie didn't really get the tone or the nuances down either. So maybe it's just another example of the movie not being as good as the book, but I think it fits for this post too. And either way, that movie's only a cult classic, not "still fucking classic", imo.
41408, The Warriors...Purple Rain...

I've heard people talk shit about both of those movies numerous times, plenty of those times on this board, and I know that it directly relates to the fact that they didn't see them when they were kids.

So chill.
41415, i read (and am chill) - 2 for 2!
Posted by Jehan, Thu Nov-03-05 11:12 AM
but each movie is perfectly enjoyable as an adult, w/out prior childhood viewings.

to give credence to those among us that are clearly deficient enough to say otherwise is, in my opinion, buggin'.

heavyweights is maybe my favourite childhood movie, and is still fucking hilarious today. i actually picked up the dvd last month and have maybe seen it 3 times since then. but dont deny that if you should it to an adult film buff, they wouldnt hack it to shit. "ben stiller is an egotistical idiot who plays the same role in everything. they were playing off of the success of goldberg and nucklepuck." blah blah blah.

you know im right.

Because I saw that for the first time a few days ago and it failed to terrify, even though so many people cite as one of the scariest movies they ever saw as a kid.

Also, I saw Labryinth a few years ago and it didn't do much for me.
