SHOULD WIN: Crash
WILL WIN: Brokeback Mountain

I'm sure my "Should Win" has a lot of enraged right now. Sorry (not really). I still haven't seen Brokeback, so I'm at a disadvantage I suppose, but it seems to have all the momentum, what with the gays and all that. Still, looking at that list, 2005 was a pretty great year as far as films, and six of my top 10 flicks didn't even get nominated (A History Of Violence, Syriana, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Batman Begins, Sin City, and Cinderella Man, if you're curious).

>BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
>Amy Adams, "Junebug"
>Catherine Keener, "Capote"
>Frances McDormand, "North Country"
>Rachel Weisz, "The Constant Gardener"
>Michelle Williams, "Brokeback Mountain"

SHOULD WIN: Catherine Keener
WILL WIN: Rachel Weisz

Also haven't seen Junebug. Catherine Keener was so excellent playing the straight (wo)man to Hoffman's Capote that she gets the nod from me, though Weisz was awesome and, to me, held that movie together. Being that it's a year of political films, I think Weisz gets it, and if not her, Michelle Williams.

>BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
>George Clooney, "Syriana"
>Matt Dillon, "Crash"
>Paul Giamatti, "Cinderella Man"
>Jake Gyllenhaal, "Brokeback Mountain"
>William Hurt, "A History of Violence"

SHOULD WIN: George Clooney
WILL WIN: Jake Gyllenhaal

Again, some awesome nominees, as all the ones I saw gave tremendous performances. If you thrown in some of the overlooked people (the guy who played Perry Smith in Capote, Matt Damon in Syriana), it's a good group. I'm more giving Clooney the award for everything he's done this year.

>BEST ACTRESS
>Judi Dench, "Mrs. Henderson Presents"
>Felicity Huffman, "Transamerica"
>Keira Knightley, "Pride & Prejudice"
>Charlize Theron, "North Country"
>Reese Witherspoon, "Walk the Line"

SHOULD WIN: Reese Witherspoon
WILL WIN: Reese Witherspoon

I haven't seen P&P, but Keira Knightley? Really? Also, haven't seen Transamerica.

>BEST ACTOR
>Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Capote"
>Terrence Howard, "Hustle & Flow"
>Heath Ledger, "Brokeback Mountain"
>Joaquin Phoenix, "Walk the Line"
>David Strathairn, "Good Night, and Good Luck"

SHOULD WIN: Philip Seymour Hoffman
WILL WIN: Heath Ledger

Hoffman gave the performance of his career, and with his resume, that saying something. Despite all the obvious obstacles, he managed to, by the end of the flick, make you absolutely forget it was a role. But it's not a film that got the least exposure in a year full of films few have seen. If not Hoffman, I'd like to see Howard, but he's the darkhorse. Again though, Brokeback Mountain has all the momentum.

>BEST DIRECTOR
>Ang Lee, "Brokeback Mountain"
>Bennett Miller, "Capote"
>Paul Haggis, "Crash"
>George Clooney, "Good Night, and Good Luck"
>Steven Spielberg, "Munich"

SHOULD WIN: George Clooney
WILL WIN: Ang Lee

Clooney's my winner sort of my default. Didn't see Brokeback, Capote was excellent but no so much for it's filmmaking (though for the first feature of his career, Miller hit a homerun), Crash, as much as I love it, has it's flaws, and Munich doesn't stand up.

>BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
>Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco, "Crash"
>George Clooney and Grant Heslov, "Good Night, and Good Luck"
>Woody Allen, "Match Point"
>Noah Baumbach, "The Squid and the Whale"
>Steven Gaghan, "Syriana"

SHOULD WIN: Steven Gaghan
WILL WIN: Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco

I think this is where they'll throw Crash a bone, and it's not undeserved.

>BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
>Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, "Brokeback Mountain"
>Dan Futterman, "Capote"
>Jeffrey Caine, "The Constant Gardener"
>Josh Olson, "A History of Violence"
>Tony Kushner and Eric Roth, "Munich"

SHOULD WIN: Dan Futterman
WILL WIN: Larry McMurtry (no relation) & Diana Ossana

This is probably the gimme of the night.

>BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
>"Don't Tell" (Italy)
>"Joyeux Noël" (France)
>"Paradise Now" (Palestine)
>"Sophie Scholl - The Final Days" (Germany)
>"Tsotsi" (South Africa)

>BEST ANIMATED FILM
>"Howl's Moving Castle," Hayao Miyazake
>"Tim Burton's Corpse Bride," Tim Burton and Mike Johnson
>"Wallace & Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit," Nick Park and
>Steve Box

Yikes. I saw Corpse Bride, but didn't like it.

>Hennah and Simon Bright
>"Memoirs of a Geisha," Art Direction: John Myhre; Set
>Decoration: Gretchen Rau
>"Pride & Prejudice," Art Direction: Sarah Greenwood; Set
>Decoration: Katie Spencer

SHOULD WIN: Good Night & Good Luck
WILL WIN: P&P

This is where these throwback British films clean up.

>BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
>"Batman Begins," Wally Pfister
>"Brokeback Mountain," Rodrigo Prieto
>"Good Night, and Good Luck," Robert Elswit
>"Memoirs of a Geisha," Dion Beebe
>"The New World," Emmanuel Lubezki

SHOULD WIN: Wally Pfister
WILL WIN: Rodrigo Prieto

Only seen two, but I've liked Pfister's work for some time now, and think he shot Batman wonderfully. Of course, I haven't seen The New World, Geisha, or the homos, so.

>BEST COSTUME DESIGN
>"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," Gabriella Pescucci

>BEST PICTURE

>"Capote," Caroline Baron, William Vince and Michael Ohoven,
>producers
>"Crash," Paul Haggis and Cathy Schulman, producers
>"Good Night, and Good Luck," Grant Heslov, producer
>"Munich," Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg and Barry Mendel,
>producers

Brokeback's going to win. I only saw Crash and GN&GL in this category, and niether of them blew me away. Cinderella Man shits on both of those movies.

>BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
>Amy Adams, "Junebug"
>Catherine Keener, "Capote"
>Frances McDormand, "North Country"
>Rachel Weisz, "The Constant Gardener"
>Michelle Williams, "Brokeback Mountain"

I hope Rachel Weisz wins. It's probably between her, Keener, and Michelle Williams.

>BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
>George Clooney, "Syriana"
>Matt Dillon, "Crash"
>Paul Giamatti, "Cinderella Man"
>Jake Gyllenhaal, "Brokeback Mountain"
>William Hurt, "A History of Violence"

Matt Dillon's going to win, but Clooney should win.

>BEST ACTRESS
>Judi Dench, "Mrs. Henderson Presents"
>Felicity Huffman, "Transamerica"
>Keira Knightley, "Pride & Prejudice"
>Charlize Theron, "North Country"
>Reese Witherspoon, "Walk the Line"

I imagine Reese Witherspoon's going to take this, and I can't say she doesn't deserve it.

>BEST ACTOR
>Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Capote"
>Terrence Howard, "Hustle & Flow"
>Heath Ledger, "Brokeback Mountain"
>Joaquin Phoenix, "Walk the Line"
>David Strathairn, "Good Night, and Good Luck"

No way is Hoffman not winning this. Although how shocked would everyone be if Terrence Howard won?

>BEST DIRECTOR
>Ang Lee, "Brokeback Mountain"
>Bennett Miller, "Capote"
>Paul Haggis, "Crash"
>George Clooney, "Good Night, and Good Luck"
>Steven Spielberg, "Munich"

Ang Lee's movie's winning Best Piccture, so he's winning Best Director.

>BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
>Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco, "Crash"
>George Clooney and Grant Heslov, "Good Night, and Good Luck"
>Woody Allen, "Match Point"
>Noah Baumbach, "The Squid and the Whale"
>Steven Gaghan, "Syriana"

I'd give the edge to Syriana here. Crash did not have that well-written of a script, I didn't see the Squid & the Whale, and Match Point's script was good, but not great. GN&GL's script has good dialogue, even if it is sort of unfactual. But I really think Syriana will and should win.

>BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
>Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, "Brokeback Mountain"
>Dan Futterman, "Capote"
>Jeffrey Caine, "The Constant Gardener"
>Josh Olson, "A History of Violence"
>Tony Kushner and Eric Roth, "Munich"

I saw nothing here. Probably Brokeback or Capote.

>BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
>"Don't Tell" (Italy)
>"Joyeux Noël" (France)
>"Paradise Now" (Palestine)
>"Sophie Scholl - The Final Days" (Germany)
>"Tsotsi" (South Africa)

Tsotsi looks amazing, I'd like to see it win.

>BEST ANIMATED FILM
>"Howl's Moving Castle," Hayao Miyazake
>"Tim Burton's Corpse Bride," Tim Burton and Mike Johnson
>"Wallace & Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit," Nick Park and
>Steve Box

Wallace and Gromit will win in the biggest landslide of the night.

What is art direction? Ryan M, Longo, Buckshot, anyone?

>BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
>"Batman Begins," Wally Pfister
>"Brokeback Mountain," Rodrigo Prieto
>"Good Night, and Good Luck," Robert Elswit
>"Memoirs of a Geisha," Dion Beebe
>"The New World," Emmanuel Lubezki

The movies I saw from here had really good cinematography, and I can imagine the other ones all look pretty nice. Fuck it, let Batman win.

>BEST COSTUME DESIGN
>"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," Gabriella Pescucci
>"Memoirs of a Geisha," Colleen Atwood
>"Mrs. Henderson Presents," Sandy Powell
>"Pride & Prejudice," Jacqueline Durran
>"Walk the Line," Arianne Phillips

NOT Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. Those Oompa Loompas sucked.

>BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
>"Darwin's Nightmare," Hubert Sauper
>"Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," Alex Gibney and Jason
>Kliot
>"March of the Penguins," Luc Jacquet and Yves Darondeau
>"Murderball," Henry-Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro
>"Street Fight," Marshall Curry

Murderball does not deserve to lose. Darwin's Nightmare looked pretty interesting, but no way should anything beat Murderball. It's a Hoop Dreams-level doc.

>BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT
>"The Death of Kevin Carter: Casualty of the Bang Bang Club,"
>Dan Krauss
>"God Sleeps in Rwanda," Kimberlee Acquaro and Stacy Sherman
>"The Mushroom Club," Steven Okazaki
>"A Note of Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin," Corinne
>Marrinan and Eric Simonson

The Death of Kevin Carter, only because the name sounds like it's about the ex-St. Louis Rams defensive end.

>BEST FILM EDITING
>"Cinderella Man," Mike Hill and Dan Hanley
>"The Constant Gardener," Claire Simpson
>"Crash," Hughes Winborne
>"Munich," Michael Kahn
>"Walk the Line," Michael McCusker

What is good editing? Isn't good editing supposed to be unnoticable? How do they reward films for good editing? Again, film people, help me out.

>BEST MAKEUP
>"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the
>Wardrobe," Howard Berger and Tami Lane
>"Cinderella Man," David Leroy Anderson and Lance Anderson
>"Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith," Dave Elsey and
>Nikki Gooley

Cinderella Man will not win anything, because the Oscars suck. I don't know, Narnia.

>BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
>"Brokeback Mountain," Gustavo Santaolalla
>"The Constant Gardener," Alberto Iglesias
>"Memoirs of a Geisha," John Williams
>"Munich," John Williams
>"Pride & Prejudice," Dario Marianelli

John Williams is up against himself. It would be funny if he went 0-2.

>BEST ORIGINAL SONG

>Parton

THIS is what I will be watching for. If "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" doesn't win, it will ruin the Oscars. Unless they actually have Three 6 performing. And Jack Nicholson wears a grill.

>BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM
>"Badgered," Sharon Colman
>"The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation," John
>Canemaker and Peggy Stern
>"The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello,"
>Anthony Lucas
>"9," Shane Acker
>"One Man Band," Andrew Jimenez and Mark Andrews

No idea. Normally in these categories I like to pick the one with the best name, but none of these have exceptional names.

>BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM
>"Ausreisser (The Runaway)," Ulrike Grote
>"Cashback," Sean Ellis and Lene Bausager
>"The Last Farm," Rúnar Rúnarsson and Thor S. Sigurjónsson
>"Our Time Is Up," Rob Pearlstein and Pia Clemente
>"Six Shooter," Martin McDonagh

See above

>BEST SOUND EDITING

Don't know what this is.

I'm probably not the best person on this board 2 answer this but I'll take a stab anyways. Yes good editing should be seamless & unnoticeable, but @ the same time I think it also refers to how each of the shots are structured together if that makes sense? A lot of decision making goes into it which is why I find it kind of weird when/if a director doesnt, or @ least isnt involved in some way w/ editing the film.

Should Win: Rachel Weisz. Yeah, Amy Adams was the best part of Junebug, but it wasn't what anyone said it was. Weisz was commanding while playing a character mostly seen in flashback. And she's fine.
Will Win: Keener. I don't know why, but I see her surprising here.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
George Clooney, "Syriana"
Matt Dillon, "Crash"
Paul Giamatti, "Cinderella Man"
Jake Gyllenhaal, "Brokeback Mountain"
William Hurt, "A History of Violence"

Should Win: Of the bunch, I'd like to see Hurt win for such a hammy and funny performance. But if he couldn't, which he won't, Clooney did a fine job.
Will Win: Dillon. Crash'll win something, and this will be that something.

BEST ACTRESS
Judi Dench, "Mrs. Henderson Presents"
Felicity Huffman, "Transamerica"
Keira Knightley, "Pride & Prejudice"
Charlize Theron, "North Country"
Reese Witherspoon, "Walk the Line"

Should Win: Reese, but let's not act like any of us have seen more than 3 of the nominees here. Seriously, what man went to a theater and willingly watched another version of Pride & Prejudice?
Will Win: Reese. They seem to be giving this award to actresses who would have been laughed at the idea of ever winning a Globe 2 years ago recently, like Theron and Berry.

BEST ACTOR
Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Capote"
Terrence Howard, "Hustle & Flow"
Heath Ledger, "Brokeback Mountain"
Joaquin Phoenix, "Walk the Line"
David Strathairn, "Good Night, and Good Luck"

Should Win: Hoffman. All good performances in here, even though I think Phoenix's has been highly overrated, but this one is particularly good.
Will Win: Hoffman.

BEST DIRECTOR
Ang Lee, "Brokeback Mountain"
Bennett Miller, "Capote"
Paul Haggis, "Crash"
George Clooney, "Good Night, and Good Luck"
Steven Spielberg, "Munich"

Should Win: Robert Rodriguez or Christopher Nolan or Judd Apatow or Noam Baumbach. This has to be the most boring of all the main races, but I guess Clooney should get it.
Will Win: Ang Lee.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco, "Crash"
George Clooney and Grant Heslov, "Good Night, and Good Luck"
Woody Allen, "Match Point"
Noah Baumbach, "The Squid and the Whale"
Steven Gaghan, "Syriana"

Should Win: Baumbach and Gaghan both did phenomenal jobs, but I think The Squid & the Whale's script might have been a little better. Maybe. Damn, that's a tough one.
Will Win: Clooney and Heslov

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, "Brokeback Mountain"
Dan Futterman, "Capote"
Jeffrey Caine, "The Constant Gardener"
Josh Olson, "A History of Violence"
Tony Kushner and Eric Roth, "Munich"

Should Win: Caine. The writing was really good in that film, and if it had to get a consolation prize, this should be it.
Will Win: Kushner and Roth. Good script too, but he's probably winning much more on name recoginition than anything else. If Brokeback wins this though, look for a sweep.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
"Don't Tell" (Italy)
"Joyeux Noël" (France)
"Paradise Now" (Palestine)
"Sophie Scholl - The Final Days" (Germany)
"Tsotsi" (South Africa)

Should Win: I do not know. I can say I saw trailers for two of these, and of the two, Paradise Now looked better.
Will Win: Paradise Now

BEST ANIMATED FILM
"Howl's Moving Castle," Hayao Miyazake
"Tim Burton's Corpse Bride," Tim Burton and Mike Johnson
"Wallace & Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit," Nick Park and Steve Box

Should Win: I haven't seen it, but I can pretty much put my money on Howl's Moving Castle being the best of this bunch.
Will Win: Wallace & Gromit

BEST ART DIRECTION
"Good Night, and Good Luck," Art Direction: Jim Bissell; Set Decoration: Jan Pascale
"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," Art Direction: Stuart Craig; Set Decoration: Stephenie McMillan
"King Kong," Art Direction: Grant Major; Set Decoration: Dan Hennah and Simon Bright
"Memoirs of a Geisha," Art Direction: John Myhre; Set Decoration: Gretchen Rau
"Pride & Prejudice," Art Direction: Sarah Greenwood; Set Decoration: Katie Spencer

Should Win: Good Night, & Good Luck
Will Win: Memoirs of a Geisha

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
"Batman Begins," Wally Pfister
"Brokeback Mountain," Rodrigo Prieto
"Good Night, and Good Luck," Robert Elswit
"Memoirs of a Geisha," Dion Beebe
"The New World," Emmanuel Lubezki

Should Win: Batman really shouldn't win because the cinematography was nowhere near the best part of the movie, and it wasn't the best of this group. But Batman was better than all of these films, so it deserves something.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," Gabriella Pescucci
"Memoirs of a Geisha," Colleen Atwood
"Mrs. Henderson Presents," Sandy Powell
"Pride & Prejudice," Jacqueline Durran
"Walk the Line," Arianne Phillips

Should Win: Geisha
Will Win: Geisha

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

"Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," Alex Gibney and Jason Kliot
"March of the Penguins," Luc Jacquet and Yves Darondeau
"Murderball," Henry-Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro
"Street Fight," Marshall Curry

Should Win: Murderball and Enron were great, but those goddamned penguins are gonna win no matter what.
Will Win: Damn penguins.

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT
"The Death of Kevin Carter: Casualty of the Bang Bang Club," Dan Krauss
"God Sleeps in Rwanda," Kimberlee Acquaro and Stacy Sherman
"The Mushroom Club," Steven Okazaki
"A Note of Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin," Corinne Marrinan and Eric Simonson

I'm not gonna try. Although I think Mushroom Club will win cause it sounds fun.

BEST FILM EDITING
"Cinderella Man," Mike Hill and Dan Hanley
"The Constant Gardener," Claire Simpson
"Crash," Hughes Winborne
"Munich," Michael Kahn
"Walk the Line," Michael McCusker

Should Win: The Constant Gardener
Will Win: Munich

BEST MAKEUP
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," Howard Berger and Tami Lane
"Cinderella Man," David Leroy Anderson and Lance Anderson
"Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith," Dave Elsey and Nikki Gooley

Should Win: Narnia
Will Win: Star Wars

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
"Brokeback Mountain," Gustavo Santaolalla
"The Constant Gardener," Alberto Iglesias
"Memoirs of a Geisha," John Williams
"Munich," John Williams
"Pride & Prejudice," Dario Marianelli

Should NOT Win: Brokeback. That damn score is annoying. John Williams is gonna win this anyway.
Will Win: John Williams and his neverending factory line of identical scores.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
"In the Deep" from "Crash," Music by Kathleen "Bird" York and Michael Becker; Lyrics by Kathleen "Bird" York
"It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from "Hustle & Flow," Music and Lyrics by Jordan Houston, Cedric Coleman and Paul Beauregard
"Travelin' Thru" from "Transamerica," Music and Lyric by Dolly Parton

Should Win: I don't remember the Crash song, so that's probably a bad sign. I'm gonna go with the popular vote and say It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp.
Will Win: Travelin thru.

BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM
"Badgered," Sharon Colman
"The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation," John Canemaker and Peggy Stern

41009, Well, I was especially fond of the writing
Posted by Premiere, Tue Feb-28-06 05:51 PM
The acting was dope and I thought the score was good, but it was probably the best written superhero movie ever, based on comics or not.

I don't get your point about Junebug. If you didn't like it, fine, but how exactly does that discount Amy Adams' performance ?
41011, It doesn't.
Posted by Premiere, Fri Mar-03-06 11:29 PM
The second part was just restating my feelings on Junebug. She was great; she was definitely the only character who kept me in it.

Should win: Anyone but Dillon. Guess I'd have 2 say Clooney since that's the only other flick I've seen in this category. The award should be split between the supporting actors in Munich though. They were all great but none of them did quite enough to stand out. Then again, how much screen time did Hurt have?

Will win: Gayke Gyllenhaal. Funny that all the earlier Oscar talk was for him as best actor in Jarhead
