but i totally disagree with you about Carell's characterization being more "human" than Gervais...
Michael Scott is almost cartoony compared to David Brent. they've been giving him more dimension over the past couple of episodes, but he's still not completely an identifiable character (NTTAWWT)
Scott is just a boorish dimwit like the Germans in "Hogan's Heroes"... Brent was more of a pathetic character who just desperately wanted to be liked, despite being completely devoid of wit or social skills
