The Searchers
Rio Bravo
Red River
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
My Darling Clementine
Once Upon a Time in the West
7 Men from Now
Unforgiven
The Man from Laramie
Winchester '73
For a Few Dollars More
High Noon
Stagecoach
Yojimbo
Seven Samurai
Destry Rides Again
The Wild Bunch

the answer is no
31103, ok i was being superlative ..
Posted by brainsoup_, Mon Dec-26-05 03:26 PM
in my description what i really wanted to explore was the continuation of that tradition of 'American Triumphalism' through other genres of Film, the Action Film , the War Film and even through Science Fiction ( see Independence Day , Aliens and pastiched in Starship Troopers.)
31104, lol, then say that
Posted by navajo joe, Mon Dec-26-05 03:27 PM
31105, dammit.
Posted by Rjcc, Mon Dec-26-05 03:30 PM
I was just about to make my "since you so obviously wanted to be asked why you consider this movie a western" post and there you go ruining it.

I think your american triumphalism explanation is bullshit tho.

I'm assuming you've ever watched more than three movies called westerns.

theres all kinds of elements that in no way exist in apollo 13.

the sheriff/bank robber showdown in the street element is much more inherent to the western than "american triumphalism".

There is no bad guy in apollo 13.

the western is typified by a binaryism and dichotomous thinking ie good vs evil, man vs nature, the rugged individual vs tyrannical/pampered soicety etc etc.

apollo 13 would come in man vs nature tradition.
31109, yeah and that is fucking retarded.
Posted by Rjcc, Mon Dec-26-05 04:05 PM
by that definition. ANY fucking movie is a western.

it takes an intellectual to even think of a concept so stupid.

how many movies don't have a sonso vs. sonso plot if you take the time to break it down.

Well, "Firefly"(and Serenity I guess) is considered a space western these days....in a TV show, that is.

The last 'space western' film that even stands out to me(serenity excluded) is "Outland". It was basically "12 o'clock high" on a moon of Jupiter.
