29703, Scarlett Johansson: Glum, Mouth-Breathing Sex Kitten
Posted by janey, Tue Jan-17-06 12:09 PM
So now I've seen her in six movies,* in five of which she had significant or starring roles, and my opinion remains the same. While she does a better job in Match Point than I would have expected (plus she shuts her mouth a little more often), there are still a few jarringly horrible moments.**

Can't anyone give her a role in which she could try out a little lightheartedness? Maybe that's her forte and we just don't know it because everyone casts her in these downer roles.

And what about that mouth? Okay, you know, her lips are sexy, but admit it, they're also kind of deformed.

This poor girl needs some really good training. She's still an infant and she doesn't have the natural talent of, say, Marina Golbahari (Osama) or Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace). She needs to stop working for a minute and go to some classes with a good teacher. Too bad Lee Strasberg is dead.

*The six movies: Ghostworld, American Rhapsody, The Man Who Wasn't There, Lost in Translation, Girl With A Pearl Earring, and Match Point.

**Jarringly horrible moment ne plus ultra: In the kitchen talking with Chris and Mrs. Eastby. Whew!

Not even close. She was terrible in Ghost World & The Man (& a good actress) who wasnt there. And she hasnt really gotten much better since then.

But damn if those looks dont go a looooooooong ways.

But I'm still on the fence on whether or not I'll check out Match Point. It does look pretty trite. And the comparisons 2 Closer arent swaying me either.
29738, Any and all comparisons to Closer are incorrect.
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Jan-17-06 01:57 PM
And the movie may be trite, but it's still good. And Scarlett's performance wasn't that great to me. But she's still hot.

And I don't get these comparisons to Angelina, who also hasn't exactly had the best body of work (she won an Oscar for essentially playing herself).

Let's not kid ourselves here. We're not paying to see Scarlett or Angelina act in the classical sense.

I was unashamedly googly-eyed for her whenever she was on the screen. Women are allowed to swoon over Affleck's mouth-breathing, so I'll properly swoon for Ms. Scarlet.

Plus, she has done light-hearted. See: Ghost-World.
29742, yeah yeah, that's why the title of this thread includes "Sex Kitten"
Posted by janey, Tue Jan-17-06 02:13 PM
I am proud that the word "titties" has not yet appeared in this thread. No doubt it's because this is PTP and not GD.

I KNOW if I were a man, I'd want to fuck her.

On the other hand, there are women who are so beautiful that, even as a straight woman, I want to fuck them. Maggie Cheung is a good example.

And maybe the difference between being a 20-30something man and a 40something woman is that it *doesn't* make me happy to see a man I think is hot if he's doing a really crappy role. Remember how I was bemoaning Jean Reno's participation in The Da Vinci Code? I can't see the film or I'll lose respect for him. Not that I haven't seen him do crap. I have, but it wasn't intentional. lol

Don't see this. Thora Birch's role, then yeah. Btu Scarlett was the snarky best friend. Dry wit and "haven't you ever heard of the miracle of masturbation" and whatnot. That don't equal very sad and my book. Closer to light-hearted in a twisted way.

The key word is DRY. She's 2 damn DRY in every movie I've seen her in. She's so DRY it's impossible 4 it 2 come off as lighthearted in my book. If that's the way the character was supposed 2 be played then fine. But it's not lighthearted. If the character is supposed 2 be lighthearted then she fails miserably.
29752, She was the most hopeful character in the movie though

29756, Who would you have picked to play her role in Lost In Translation?
Posted by Lightfoot, Tue Jan-17-06 04:12 PM
Because when I watch that film my understanding is that this character is meant to be extremely appealing--physically and mentally/sexually and matrimonially (if that's a word)--to the viewer. And she was incredibly successful at doing that...mad males walked out of the theatre wanting to wife up that character and bone her silly on the honeymoon. Maybe you can attribute that to her "look" but I thought she played the role really effectively.
29757, I thought it was her best role, honestly
Posted by janey, Tue Jan-17-06 05:30 PM

She's a melodramatic actor in an age where nail-on-the-head storytelling and overwrought emotions are considered art. Most quality actors wouldn't waste their time in the films that she is getting. It's not like she's stealing great roles from anyone.

Her role in Lost In Translation would be considered "a waste of time" by most actresses?
29771, this post shoulda ended after the first reply.
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Tue Jan-17-06 05:27 PM
but then again, this what you people get for having expectations about acting. see, i've largely freed myself of that problem, so my enjoyment of a movie isn't contingent on the quality of the actors on screen. for instance, as i watch something with Scarlett Johansson in it, where it concerns her, the bust-line of her dress leaves me frustrated or encouraged moreso than does the quality of her performance. shallow? sure, but liberation has its side-effects sometimes.

and as per a request for lighthearted, her next collaboration w/ Woody Allen appears less in the vein of Crimes and Misdemeanors and instead something with a bit of smiles (http://imdb.com/title/tt0457513/ ). i still haven't seen Match Point--lord and legal-tender willing, i shall soon--but that stops me from being able to speak on any so-called "jarringly horrible moment." but janey, since she impressed you more in that most recent of films, isn't it possible that she could just be getting "better"? i mean, she made Ghost World when she was 17. shit, i fell off a bike and fractured my elbow when i was about that age, and i only hope i know now how to avoid such a scene. maybe Ghost World or American Rhapsody are merely the cinder blocks in the refuse piles along the way to what should be a long and *bountiful* career.

also, i have high hopes for her being cast in The Black Dahlia adaptation.

i don't mean to defend her too much, as if i have anything invested in her future but ten bucks and a hardon, but maybe she lurks her or something.

EDIT: (ricky_BUTLER in '06: bringing you only Scarlett Johansson replies)

>but i dunno... Brian de Palma never fails to frustrate me

i liked the book enough, de Palma seems capable of its kind, so a decent adapation will probably make for at least a good movie. (i never read LA Confidential, but i'd be curious to see how much Curtis Hanson had to change to bring it from the page to the screen.)

>at least she's certain to look absolutely breathtaking in
>post-WWII hair and clothing

and that's a good movie there.

>did you check out the Gondry Directors Label disc yet, ricky?

long answer: so i signed up again for a one month period for Netflix. the director series DVDs of Jonze and Gondry were the last two i received. when i got them in the mail, not wanting to be charged automatically once the new pay period began, i cancelled my account but still had my 7 days to send them back. on Sunday, day after i cancelled, i went to play the Gondry one, only to find out that the disc had a large crack in it and wouldn't play, and i didn't wanna ask for a new copy, thinking they may charge me for a month again. so unfortunately, no, i've haven't seen it yet. i'm thinking about springing for a used copy though.

short answer: no, i've haven't seen it yet.

it's probably my second favorite if all Ellroy's earlier stuff (Clandestine being my fave). it kinda goes over the top at the end, but i think it epitomizes all of Ellroy's recurring themes in their most concentrated form

he actually did pretty good in terms of compressing a lot of the detail into the film... only problems i had were that he softened Guy Pearce's character a bit too much (he was the typical racist asshole Ellroy hero in the book) and tacked on that totally bogus "good triumphs over all" ending that i think undermined the very theme of the story

I'd slide her a breath mint and keep on handling my business with her.

And as I said before, it's not like the ladies in this post would ignore the results of Affleck's mouth-breathing for a chance to score with him.

The hate is indeed strong here.

How did Affleck (Ben, I'm assuming) get into this? Besides, he doesn't do it for me.

>The hate is indeed strong here.

Maybe janey is hating, but I was just making an observation. You and Zoo chose to take my comment that way. You two are like those co-workers of Elaine's on Seinfeld, all "Rrrar!" after she commented on the chick whose arms didn't move when she walked. lol

1. You're assuming she would have bad breath. But considering she's an angel, I'd highly doubt it.

2. On the off chance she did have bad breath, I'd slip it to her on the low. And my charm would make it so that it wasn't an issue.

>How did Affleck (Ben, I'm assuming) get into this?

I mentioned him up earlier (also notorious for mouth-breathing while acting).

"Out of pocket": meaning saying something foul or in the wrong.

29801, Yeah, no, you're hating.
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Jan-17-06 10:27 PM
No matter how much you may believe you're "expressing a well thought out opinion and including reasonable suppositions," hate is hate, especially if you call the girl a "glum mouth breathing sex kitten" in the subject line. If you were forreal, like if this were some kind of scholarly exposition paper on Scarlett Johannson, you would have titled it differently. Period. You don't get medals for disguising hate with well-constructed essays. Come on, yo, we missed that train to StupidLand a long time ago...

29809, this is why i can't watch porn with women
Posted by ternary_star, Wed Jan-18-06 07:17 AM
y'all turn something that should be carnal and dirty into a fucking psychological examination. like you're watching "Big Wet Black Asses 5" with your girl and she's talking about how much the girl's fishnets must hurt in that position.

a strapless dress? who the fuck CARES what kind of dress it is? her titties are full, real, and glorious. and the dress served as a perfect showcase for them.

i know haters. haters are friends of mine. and you, ma'am, are fucking *HATING*.
29810, two things: First, Scarlett was NOT wearing a strapless dress at the GG
Posted by janey, Wed Jan-18-06 12:27 PM
I was speaking in general about fashion, so your diatribe is misplaced.

Second, I wear a black fishnet bodysuit for sex on occasion. It's particularly nice for public sex. You're projecting your girlfriend's issues onto me.

Ergo, nothing you say has any validity whatsoever.

Breathe and know you're breathing.

No, she did well in that. Overall though, I have not been impressed with her work.

"Her role in Lost In Translation would be considered "a waste of time" by most actresses?"

I was looking at her work since Lost in Translation. I don't think many people were fighting for The Perfect Score, Love Song for Bobby Long, The Island, In Good Company. The original post was talking about foreign actresses who usually seem much happier appearing in non-Hollywood fare.
