12051, Current Director/Actor films you'll see no matter what Posted by m, Tue Dec-17-02 04:17 PM
Which *current* actors/actresses/directors will you go see in the theaters (not wait for video) no matter what the reviews are?
I'll go see these director's films on the first day the movie comes out no matter what the reviews or word of mouth is: • P.T. Anderson • David Fincher • M. Night Shyamalan • Cameron Crowe • James Cameron • David Lynch • Clint Eastwood • Steven Soderbergh • Robert Zemeckis • Spike Jonze • Mike Figgis • Wachowski Bros • Mike Judge • Oliver Stone
There are other directors I respect, but can go by a film by film basis: Spike Lee, Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Luc Besson, Coen Bros, Farrely Bros, John Woo, Michael Mann, Frank Darabont, Stephen Frears, Peter Jackson, George Lucas and so forth.
There aren't really any actresses or actors where I hear that they have a movie coming out and it makes me say I'm going. I always have to hear who's directing, or after it comes out word of mouth.

Mike Judge?
Probably just the Coen Bros. for me in the states. Not in love with all their movies, but their work is always interesting, always creative. Always worth at least a matinee.
Maybe Wes Anderson too, but three movies just isn't enough to be sure. He could easily disappoint with the next one.
Wong Kar-Wai, I'm probably there.
Takeshi Kitano, yep.
I may have missed one, but no one gets a free pass. I get to the theater so infrequently these days.

However as I write this I realize I really dont have much desire to see Jersey Girl but chances are Ill give it a chance. He's not a great filmaker but his films (to me) are all entertaining and funny as hell
Tarantino - Regardless of how derivitive he is, you can always count on his films to be very entertaining
Alexander Payne - I havent seen Citizen Ruth but just going off Election and About Schmidt I will see anything he puts out until I get a lemon
The Coen Brothers - I havent LOVED every movie theyve put out but the ones I dont love, I still like
PTA - He's not perfect but he hasnt let me down yet
Martin Scorsese - Well, because he's Martin Scorsese! If I cant take a chance on Marty then who can I take a chance on?
Wes Anderson - So far so good
Didnt quite make the cut -
Steven Soderbergh - I liked Out of Sight, I really liked The Limey, I loved Traffic, Brocovich?... Ehh, I didnt like Oceans Eleven at all (I know its just supposed to be a fun popcorn heist movie, I still thought it sucked ass), I had no desire to see Full Frontal and I refuse to see Solaris until I see the original (I just recorded it).
Brian Depalma - Seems to be taking a nose dive
Spike Lee - Depends on the film
As far as actors, I have my favorites but I cant think of any actor that Id watch a film just because theyre in it. Though I do like both Vince Vaughn/John Favreau flicks (Swingers/Made)

watched 'reservoir dogs' for the first time yesterday... almost had to stop watching it during the torture scene (and i've *never* stopped watching a movie.) was a very good movie... i think i've seen all of tarantino's films now...

i'm buying the criterion version of solaris in a few weeks. i won't see the remake in the theaters even though it has 2 of the directors involved that i mentioned on my list... hmm. i love soderbergh... he's the best director when it comes to dvds... his commentaries are always entertaining (especially the one on the limey.)

COSIGN. Miller's Crossing is sick. Gabe Byrne has never been better sans Usual Suspects IMO. The supporting performances are all great as well. The Coen Bro's seem 2 always get the most outta the actors/actresses no matter what the role is.

>>Not 2 post jack but anyone know sup w/ that new Kevn Smith >>DVD released yesterday? > >??? what DVD was that?
The DVD is called "An Evening with Kevin Smith" and it's 2 discs of 3 hours of talks that Kevin Smith did on a college tour. It's five sessions of Q&A with the students.
He covers things such as working w/ Prince, how Jay's character came up, when he met Jay, PTA (I want to see this), Dogma protests, Jay's porn career??, how he succeeds when critics bash him, industry stories, and having sex w/ his wife (Kevin followed the Catholic belief of no pre-marital sex), etc.

Spike Lee (it's been a long time since I've really loved one of his films, but I'll continue to see his stuff because I respect his oeuvre as a whole
Wong Kar-Wai
Coen Brothers (same as Spike. Lebowski, O Brother and Man Who Wasn't There were cool, but i just don't get "that Barton Fink feeling" from them)
Spike Jonze
Jeunot et Caro (if they ever work together again)
Shinya Tsukamoto (then again, maybe not. I've never watched any of his movies in the theatre anyway)
Darren Aronofsky
Quentin Tarantino (eh… why not?)
Wes Anderson
Jim Jarmusch (?)
Pedro Almodovar
can't think of too many more, though I'm sure they exist.
it's been a long time since I went to the theater anyway. I've been all about the French and Japanese New Waves of late…

12070, You guys are generous Posted by blue23, Wed Dec-18-02 09:48 AM
No questions asked: Wes Anderson Coen Bros Lynch Aronofsky (off curiosity alone)
Would almost say: Scorsese - Altho I can't say I'm too excited for 'Gangs' Almodovar - Don't really connect with his films and don't get amped up for them but they're all worth seeing. Soderbergh - Almost and then he goes and makes "Ocean's 11" (garbage no matter what it was 'supposed' to be) and "Full Frontal"
Actors? No way I could trust an actor like that. Too many agents in the way.
BTW

I even forgot that actors were supposed to be included in the mix here…
I don't see films because of actors, for the most part… once upon a time, I might have been able to say that DeNiro was my man, but in the 90, he just lost his mind, it seems.
there ARE some actors whose presence always excites me, though… when you see them on the cast list, you know you're likely to see something good… Phil Seymour Hoffmann, Keitel, Don Cheadle (except for those Pitch Black periods that he's just got to pay his rent), Jack Black, even… but they're not enough to drag me to the theatre.

the number is getting smaller, but there are still a few. i think there are much more directors than actors now, but here they go.
actors: Edward Norton Cate Blanchet Julianne Moore Brian Cox Nicholson (usually) Don Cheadle Luis Guzman
directors: PT and Wes Anderson Oliver Stone Michael Mann Spike Jonze Jim Jarmusch Pedro Almodovar Alexander Payne Ang Lee David Lynch Soderbergh (usually) Speilberg (usually) m. night-i dont know why, but i just cant help myself. i think thats about it for people whose films i will see no matter what. there could be a commercial saying "coming soon-a new film by spike jonze" and i would be first in line. i wish i could put more people up here, like pacino, de niro, scorsese, but recently those people have been letting me down. a year a go soderbergh would be the first person i thought of, but i had no interest in seeing full frontal and heard it was horribe.
i think thats it.

In addition to these ones you mentioned:
>• P.T. Anderson >• David Fincher >• M. Night Shyamalan (The New Hithcock)
>• Steven Soderbergh (God bless him for taking some chances)
