Remember, they made Iron Man a smash, which was also a long shot at the time. Guardians is quite a bit riskier, as there's no one with RDJ's charisma in this film, but they have built up some goodwill with the public.
Consider this their 'Brave' or 'A Bug's Life', using Pixar as an example
