114545, RZA To Direct ‘Genghis Khan’ + ‘No Man’s Land’
Posted by hardware, Tue Oct-30-12 02:47 PM
Iron Fists better be fucking TIGHT

http://www.okayplayer.com/news/rza-direct-genghis-khan-no-mans-land.html

With the RZA‘s directorial debut Man With The Iron Fists (you may have heard us mention it one or six times) punching the eyeball out a theater near you this Friday, November 2nd, the Abbot has already announced his next two film projects. First and foremost, he has signed on to direct the historical action flick meets biopic Genghis Khan, written and executive produced by John Milius (for non-movie nerds, that is the dude who wrote the lines “Go ahead, make my day” and “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” for Dirty Harry and Apocalypse Now, respectively). The Hollywood Reporter sums up the premise of the movie–which has apparently been on the shelf for years until the Wu-master stepped in to RZA-rect it–like this:

Khan, one of the great military figures in world history, is the ruler who united the Mongol tribes and conquered great parts of Asia and Eastern Europe in the early 13th century. The story will be told from the point of view of Khan’s son and grandson.

Shooting should begin next year in China. Meanwhile, RZA has also attached his 3 letters to No Man’s Land. Here’s what we know about that one:

No Man’s Land is being produced by Bill Mechanic and his Pandemonium production banner as well asReginald Hudlin, a producer on Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained. The script, by Trey Ellis and David Klass, centers on a man who steals a powerful criminal’s diamond that soon proves to be far more valuable than initially thought. With the help of a dancer, he attempts to stay alive and cash in on the jewel. The story takes place during one night and has been described as having echoes of The Warriors.

If two films a year is going to be the template going forward, we might have to change the epithet RZA-rector to RZA, director.

114555, worst movie i've ever seen in a theater
Posted by navajo joe, Fri Nov-02-12 03:21 PM
tedious
incompetent
incoherent

although it was great to see russell crowe/lucy liu really commit and go for it.

but yeah, the movie is fucking atrocious.

now i've got a fucking migraine
114556, lol...ok. i was super confused by the positive reviews
Posted by ternary_star, Fri Nov-02-12 03:27 PM
there's no way this shit is anything but a disaster, but there were a gang of positive reviews by actual critics
114557, yeah i was shocked too
Posted by navajo joe, Fri Nov-02-12 03:34 PM
it was just bad. the action scenes are nearly as incoherent as the storyline.

there's plenty to laugh at but not enough to actually make it worthwhile trip to the movies.

whoever the editor and dp on the job should be shot.

qt and roth should be shot for telling rza this shit was anything other than hot garbage.

it's days like this where i hate being a genre fan

114558, If Tarantino's name wasn't attached, critics would roast it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Nov-03-12 11:41 AM
However, for some reason, when his name is on something, "incoherence" becomes "part of the grindhouse aesthetic."

As much as I utterly despised Death Proof, it at least LOOKS like a movie-- it is framed well, with confident camera movement and consistency in editing style.

This movie looks like RZA had no clue what he wanted to do. There's no coherence to anything, with the exception of Russell Crowe's weight.
114559, thank you

I didn’t expect this movie to be good by any stretch of the imagination but I at least hoped it would be really fun. It wasn’t even that.

I know what The RZA (co-writer, director and star) was going for here. He was clearly a fan of wuxia movies and tried to create one here with CGI. Those movies weren’t cinematic masterpieces either and maybe he should have drawn upon other influences. The movie was poorly written and structured particularly the interruption of action to get into one character’s backstory.

There were a few entertaining performances by Russell Crowe (Jack Knife), Lucy Liu (Madam Blossom) and especially Byron Mann (Silver Lion). Some of the action setpieces were cool particularly the final free-for-all at the Pink Blossom brothel but it wasn’t worth it. This is a straight-to-DVD film. Wait for it to get there.
114563, i didn't shout out Silver Lion
Posted by navajo joe, Fri Nov-02-12 03:59 PM

Waaaay too much exposition
You could tell this shit was in his head too long.
And then there was the odd choices of when and when not to use CG
You got CG Brass Body, but you can't let us see them arm nubs?
And then there was all that blood, but no titties.

But yo, I was fucking entertained and laughed my ass off
Maybe my expectations were far lower than y'all or something
Maybe I've watched too many Kung fu movies
I had fun
114566, I loved Fat Russell Crowe. The rest, however, was totally incompetent.

Sigh.
114567, It's pretty much Grindhouse Part 2
Posted by bwood, Sat Nov-03-12 10:20 AM
I don't you niggas were expecting from a kung-fu movie directed by RZA, but everyone in my packed theater had fun in this.

My only problem is RZA tried to tell too much story and had too many characters and it suffered greatly because of it. But like I said that was my only gripes with it.

But liked I said my packed theater loved this film and it's a fun movie all around.
114568, ditto
Posted by hardware, Sat Nov-03-12 07:36 PM
nghs in here looking for Crouching Tiger

the whole premise has B-Movie all over it
114569, Literally no one here wanted Crouching Tiger, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Nov-03-12 10:03 PM
I was excited as shit about this film, but the incompetence of the editing/framing/script/acting consistency interfered with its ability to be fun. I don't think people thinking it sucked expected anything other than an enjoyable grindhouse style kung fu genre flick with sweet action and juicy dialogue. There just wasn't *nearly* enough of either.
114570, it worked for me *shrug*
Posted by hardware, Sun Nov-04-12 03:13 PM
i agree that there was way too much exposition
some of that stuff could have been told through fighting
especially the character development
we didnt need that many Russel Crowe brothel scenes
especially if we wasn't showing titties
114571, I mean, I don't think we disagree.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-04-12 05:56 PM
You were just satisfied with what you received, and I wasn't.

The way the entire theater busted out in laughter when this dude is a slave with Pam Grier as his mother cannot be duplicated. This film was a comedy with some slick action added within it. Since there is no part where the film tries to take itself serious, I place it in the same category of Planet Terror, Death Race and Hobo with a Shotgun. Good film, I'll buy it on Google Play when it becomes available sometime next year....

i mean it was really funny, kind of corny, but the fight scenes were great.

this was a campy kung-fu movie. i didn't have any particular expectation but like someone said when quentin tarantino is involved, it gives the film credibility.

i though The Geminis and Madam Blossom (Lucy Liu) and her girls were some of the standout characters. Lucy Liu was a G.

Byron Mann as Silver Lion was hilarious. Like a rock star kung fu gangster. LOL

I liked RZA's role as The Blacksmith, though a little more character development might've made the film even better. Ditto for Zen-Yi (Yune) and Jack Knife (Crowe), as these guys were (supposed to be) the main/major stars.

While I could've waited for this film on DVD, no regrets for watching it at the theater. Like I said, it was very entertaining. Not THEE best kung-fu movie, but its still fun to watch.

it's like RZA convinced somebody to give him a lot of money to make a movie after letting them listen to the entire Wu catalog and told them it would the most epic kung fu movie ever. i spent the first half of the movie wondering how a black guy ended up in china in the 1800s. and what little kid says the word "formidable"? it wasn't bad, it just wasn't good.

Alright now, this is a movie directed and starring RZA as some kind of kung-fu hero with an iron fist. The trailer looks b-movie as hell and direct to DVD. I can't even say how they were able to afford Russel Crowe--maybe he lost a few too many poker games and this is how he had to pay up?

Honestly if it hadn't been talked up so much I would have just assumed it was Kill Bill: the Bootleg Version, with bad acting, bad dialogue, a dumb story, an awkward mix of camp and taking itself too seriously, and lots of action with occasionally really gory shit that comes out of nowhere. And I would've enjoyed it for that.

But then it was hyped and hyped and hyped.

These comments are reassuring me that it's everything I thought it would be in the beginning.

This doesn't really seem like run to the theater shit. This is shit to watch on the couch late at night when I'm staying in but can't sleep.
114592, I went with someone that has no idea who RZA is

believe it or not, such people do exist
(she's a FOB)
she says to me after the movie
"he always had a look on his face like he was about to drool, looked real goofy" and "not a good actor, just "there", like there was no reason for him to be the lead"
I was like "you saw american gangster right? he played a cop, remember?"
she goes "yea, not believable there either"
It took all I had not to be like "Bob Digi, yea you know who is he!"
114593, If RZA didn't direct this, you guys would be calling this "mindless fun"

Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Dec-09-12 06:31 PM
I knew it was dumb as hell as I was watching it.

But that's what RZA was trying to do.

He aimed to make a wild ass silly "Big Trouble In Little China" flick. And he achieved that.

I loved "BTILC" and dug this shit too.

Shit was live action comic book.

Everybody wants to pretend to be a movie critic now. Just watch the flick and have some fun for 90 mins.

I had 2 problems with it.

1.) No titties. Shit didn't feel like it was Rated R
2.) Them Chinese cats accents had me blown. They sounded like Brad & Chad from So Cal. Didn't even try to sound Asian.

Other than that, I'm gonna put that shit on a lot. Background. Re-watch. Whenever I wanna see somebody kick another cat in the face. Or a nigga turn into copper. Lucy Liu being Lucy Liu. RZA's hairline look crazy. Fat Russell Crowe with a super knife.

Shit tanked something horribly, but I wouldn't be mad if he made a sequel.

114601, It was very entertaining
Posted by topaz, Fri Dec-21-12 05:23 AM
Silver Lion reminded me of Chappelle's Rick James or Prince lol, especially when he said 'kiss the ring' in front of the mirror.

The Gemini fight was great, love the music during that scene, my favourite track of the score.

A lot of good looking women in the film. I'm not big on Lucy Liu but Jamie Chung and Zen Yi's wife were gorgeous.

The backstory for the Blacksmith dragged for way too long, it's pretty much my only complaint. Well, that and no boobs...

I'll buy this on blu-ray when it's on sale, and hopefully there'll be some cool features and deleted scenes. They cut it down from 4 hours to 90 minutes apparently.
114602, Lol @ 4 hours. WTF could've been included in that?

had a shitload of blood n gory bits.
everything was done fine, direction was pretty on point in some scenes (the camera revolving around Jack after he guts that other dude during his intro scene at the brothel, the rage just fucking FLOWED offa him n the choice of cam movement really enhanced the shit out of that one lil scene). whole thing was some kinda dumb but not really fun, but ykno, emphasis on FUN. and i think everyone involved knew that.

while the cinematography is certainly on point, the execution is seriously lacking in this film.

and honestly, i felt like rza didn't really deliver. he's had solid turns in supporting roles, but this came across as life-less. almost robotic.

too much hollywood muscle associated with this film for them to falter.

the fight choreography was nothin' stellar. in the time since the crouching tiger/matrix, the art of fighting on film has become a bit stagnant.

not terrible, but certainly not great.

114621, Bomb confession: I let motherfuckas scare me out of going to the theater
Posted by Bombastic, Thu Oct-10-13 12:22 AM
between folks I talked to out here, this post, some of the Grantland digs & other stuff I allowed myself to be talked out of giving RZA, a man who with his contributions to the world exists on the highest tier of my personal cultural icons (with Bobby Dylan, pre-Bullwinkle Deniro, Ali, AI & possibly 3-4 others) my cash while this was still playing at the cinema down the street for what seemed like only a week.

I'd been planning on going opening night for like a year up until a week or so before it actually came out.

Ended up Red-Boxing this last month, bracing myself for the bad & realizing 'this shit is fucking FUN, WTF was I tripping over or listening to?!?'.

I'm fucking proud of RZA for this one, I hope he gets to make more but it doesn't seem like he will be able to get another one made anytime soon due to reception/box-office and that's a shame.

This should be a fixture in the college dorms, 18-year-old Bomb would have watched this tripping my balls off in a Northeastern dorm room, never knowing or caring that others were claimed it was a trainwreck before seeing it myself.

The cast was fantastic & clearly having fun, the action was campy but still cool, I guess the weakest part of it was RZA as narrator/actor (that part probably could have gone elsewhere while he concentrated on just making the movie because I think it was played a bit too straight pitted against the hamminess of Crowe & Co) but that's a minor issue.

I'm with you dude, this shit was a cool little 2010's kung-fu homage that deserves cult status.

For Shame. For Why?

THOROUGHLY enjoyed it (1.5 real sit throughs, the other

Its the right type of tribute, captures everything we love
about that genre, has some NOT overone cool historical shit in
here, a solid little message + some very good special effects

The little women empowerment shit in there was dope

I just don't get how ANYONE can actually HATE this movie.

There were definitely problems with it. Acting/Dialogue specifically. Visually I thought it was quite well done and the STORY in and of itself while a tad cliche was well done IMO>

I have to agree w/you on principle - if another director had made it, it would have been a cult classic, rightly, or wrongly. - hands down.

I hope they do a sequel tho. I'd like to see more. I think RZA can take this farther and do better w/it.

Right, because the best Kung Fu flicks of all time had
stellar acting dialogue

The dialogue and acting were perfectly fine

Visually I thought it was quite well done and
>the STORY in and of itself while a tad cliche was well done

"Cliche?"

You're joking, right?

Its a tribute, throwback film with some awesome wrinkles
added to the classic format of Kung Fu film

There's a black angle, a women's empowerment angle...its
like, the perfect type of throwback

They won't, because white hipsters tore it down because a
"rapper" directed it

Oh I LOVED all that. Again, I said the story was a TAD cliche, but overall well done. I LIKED the plot. But I gotta call a spade a spade.

Again, on principle, I agree. I don't feel it applies to me tho. I'm judging him fairly and I'm a HUGE Kung Fu movie buff. But to pretend that Chinese Connection is a better film than Fist of Legend is just nostalgia and wrong. Kung Fu movies have moved on from the 'homage' he was trying to do and for a reason, IMO.

It needed a few tweaks here and there in order to make it above average-great.

The fight scenes needed to be more along the lines of the old school kung fu movies. less slow motion 30 second cut aways. None of the actors are true martial artist so that of course is the reason why.

I was expecting Shaw Brothers and that didnt happen. Might be my fault really.
