112232, The Official Giant Sized Tales to Suffice (by OKP buckshot_defunct) Post
Posted by Invisiblist, Tue Mar-08-11 09:40 AM
http://talestosuffice.com/ <---for buying and perusing

For those that don't know/remember, buckshot_defunct (aka Kenny Keil) had a comic out a couple of years ago that was really funny, but it got dropped after one issue because Diamond (the only real comic distributer) changed their order guidelines. I believe Tales to Suffice #1 was fairly successful, given the type of comic it is.

He couldn't let the idea for the comic go, though, and eventually decided to self-publish. Friends, family, and fans helped foot the printing costs via Kickstarter, in a campaign that was a raging success. He still had to come out of pocket for shipping, etc.

So now we have Giant-Sized Tales to Suffice, a paperback beast that is basically more than three issues worth of funny.

In the interim, Kenny lost his regular job. His wife believes in him, certain OKPs believe in him, and many industry guys like his work. This guy has really busted his ass to shove himself into the comics industry, and now you can nudge him further. This isn't just a "lemme help dude out because he's working hard" situation, though.

The book is fucking good. It's hilarious, gorgeous, and the quality of the paperback printing slaps the shit outta mainstream paperback printings costing much more.

Head over to his site (link at the top) and cop for $14.99, or get two individual issues for $.99 each in digital format. Discuss the book in this post!
112233, Damn, Frank. That was fast as shit. Thanks for the anchor.

Though it's a whole different ball game when you're on the customer side of things.

Still - glad to hear people like the book just as an object itself. I didn't have a huge budget to work with, but my dayjob experience paid off and I'm really happy with how everything came out. The colors came out a hair dark, but that's to be expected.

And lugging 28 cartons of the thing into my upstairs apartment did have me briefly wishing I'd gone with a flimsier paper stock.

Just 2 entries up so far, but plenty more to come: http://kennykeil.blogspot.com/

Really feel blessed to have the project out there and being able to see the reactions. PTP was a HUGE motivator in getting me back into reading and making comics, and were incredibly supportive every step of the way as I was finding my way through this book.

Now then, ladies and gentlemen. Let's get it.

because of the deluge of rewards, and all of the work you've gotten in the last year or so?
112284, Definitely
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Mar-15-11 04:49 PM
Beyond the obvious reason that practice makes you faster/better at anything, on top of that I've improved my tools and methods drastically since that first issue (which was created so inefficiently it's a wonder the thing even exists).

The rewards were intended as a 'thank you' sort of thing, but they really benefited me a lot since they gave me so much practice. I'm still pretty early in my artistic development (I hope), so I look at a lot of them and think 'Damn, I couldn't have pulled that off a couple years ago'. Which is cool.

That said, I'm still not anywhere near as fast as I want to be

Atomic Books in Baltimore should have some soon, and I just dropped a stack off at House of Secrets in Burbank. More to come I hope!

If anyone knows of any cool spots that I should reach out to, PLEASE feel free to suggest!

However- don't let that stop you from suggesting. LA's a big city.

Between work, the baby and the weather I haven't had a chance to go over (or around) the hill yet but I'll definitely be hitting up Meltdown and Golden Apple, maybe a couple other spots as well.

Thanks player.

Hey man-I'd suggest Comic Book Jones in Staten Island, NY.
Great shop. They have a great selection and regularly hold cool
events like tailgating parties or in-store music performances & such.

http://www.comicbookjones.com

The owner loves Tales Designed to Thrizzle. I think he would really be into
your work.

The owner's brother is a good friend of mine & a killin' musician so we've played
an in-store there before. Had a blast and ended up spending a ton on funny books
(he gave me a sick discount)

Give me a shout if you want me to hook up an intro!

Eisner Award-winning shop with three locations, carries alot of indie titles, plus the owner (Cal) is a really good guy. I'm sure that they'd be down with taking some copies on consignment or something.

Eastern Canada could use a little Finkelman so do it up.

I bought it at the local indie bookstore* ( Quimby's in Chicago, if anybody's keeping score).

And I went to the local coffee spot to enjoy it. Unfortunately, I opened it to the first page and started laughing aloud. It made me look like "The Crazy Guy in the Corner", so I had to wait until I got home. I'm about to read it in a few.

*- and now I know how non-Crate Digger/DJ's feel at Record Stores. This guy was looking at me like I was an undercover cop. In that "you've never been in here, who told you about this place?" kinda way. Maybe I should've had on a "Bookstore Geek" approved t-shirt, and not a hoodie from my Alma Mater. first: put it online (with a pay-whatever-you-want formula)
second: get cd's (I'm looking at July) with the artwork for not more than 10$

third: vinyl

completely DIY release (with help from ofcourse Kenny, and the producer and some featurings).
