108781, So, my comic book is hitting the streets in October.
Posted by buckshot defunct, Mon Aug-04-08 05:32 PM
(( Okay, I know this is kind of pluggy, but dammit, how often does your first comic book get published? ))

http://talestosuffice.com/

My graphic opus, Tales to Suffice #1, will be available for purchase in October. 32 full color pages (it's more of a mini-opus I suppose), written and drawn by myself, for the ridiculously low price of $3.95. It's being published by Slave Labor Graphics and can be found on pages 191 *and* 192 of the August edition of "Previews" (that would be the giant phone book looking thing next to the register at most comic shops). You can pre-order your copy now simply by bugging your local comic book retailer about it.

If comic shops frighten you "normal" types, the book will also be available for online purchase later in the year. But I'm mentioning it now because the pre-orders are especially helpful to the book, and let's be honest, you really should spend less time on the internet.

I will now open the floor for any questions and comments regarding the book. If you have none, we can just talk about The Wire instead. How about that Omar guy, huh?

Thank you for your time, e-friends.
108782, I'll cop.

108789, I have a couple of questions....(edit)
Posted by rorschach, Mon Aug-04-08 05:45 PM
What's the process for getting published by Slave Labor Graphics? Is their submission process more easy or less?

And, did you create your own site for your book or did SLG do it for you?

The artwork looks dope so I'll definitely bug my local comic shop about getting it when I return to school next week.

EDIT: After reading the preview, I gotta get this. It has good art and it's funny, too. Is this going to be an ongoing book or is it a limited series?

>What's the process for getting published by Slave Labor
>Graphics? Is their submission process more easy or less?

Submitting is easy, it's the comic-making part that I found to be difficult.

My experience was fairly typical I think. I'd already printed up a couple dozen copies, and after handing it out to folks, getting a few local shops to carry it, and selling it out of my trunk in front of various El Pollo Locos for a few months, someone suggested I find a publisher, so I mailed SLG a copy of the book along with a cover letter. They liked it, gave me a lot of helpful suggestions to refine it, plus a good portion of it I re-drew of my own volition because the material was roughly a year old and looked kind of wack to me.

I guess I'd describe it as a easy process in that it was very friendly and casual. Most publishers have submission guidelines (somewhat hidden) on their websites, if you are interested in that sort of thing.

>And, did you create your own site for your book or did SLG do
>it for you?

Nah, I cobbled that together myself.

>The artwork looks dope so I'll definitely bug my local comic

Thanks!

Thanks again. I'm halfway done with issue #2 with plans for more, so here's hoping it sticks around at least a little while.
108791, why should I read it?
Posted by xbenzive, Mon Aug-04-08 05:46 PM

I might buy nonetheless, but what would make me go buy it? What's interesting about it?

108795, these days, it might take 6 issues to tell a single story in comics
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Aug-05-08 10:19 AM
Whereas my comic contains 5 stories in but one issue. That's one hell of a value. In today's economy, you really can't afford not to read my book.

Also, swear words. Everybody loves swear words. Yet some comics don't seem to have any. Mine has three.

How about career-oriented zombies? Alternative lifestyle spacemen? Agoraphobic super-heroes? Check, check, and check.

.....I hope you do well. I've started to work on a comic that uses that style of crazy, off the wall humor that your book contains. Seeing your stuff is inspiring for real. I think I'm gonna go ahead and break out the pencil and pad and get to work. Thanks for the motivation. Peace.

The usual comic guy wasn't in the shop last week so I just added it, but I might pick up the previews and flip through it and mention it to him. You know like "Oh, how'd I end up on *THIS* page.. looks cool." lol

Seriously though, congrats. I remember the stuff you posted last year being hilarious, but I haven't been able to read much of what's on the page.

I have to admit that you're probably the most talented person I've met on the net, and I hope you succeed with this. I already have high expectations.

As far as the comic is concerned, though, I'll just say that my cut is royalty-based and leave it at that. So I wouldn't get *all* the money unless I suppose you were to buy it from me in person (if things don't work out I may be back in front of El Pollo Loco selling comics out of my trunk fairly soon), but seeing as how someone else was kind enough to pay the promotion and production costs, I'm thinking they deserve a lil' somthin' somthin' too.

That kind of sucks but it's good to know I suppose. So, can comic shops not simply order one single copy of a book? It seems like your requesting a special order would guarantee at least one sale.
