Although it's pretty small part, but I was thinking that there was another rivalry in the movie. Tesla v. Edison. While watching the movie, I couldn't help but think of Edison as the Bill Gates of the time sending his ElectriThugs to steal Tesla's ideas.

According to Wikipedai, cause you know it's NEVER wrong, they had a pretty fierce rivalry that parallels the rivalry between Borden and Angiers.
