102578, I just made a $100 bet that Star Trek will make more than Wolverine.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri May-01-09 01:58 AM
I should've raised the price.

And I like comic heroes more than Star Trek in general, btw. I just think Trek will be better reviewed, have better legs, and easily be the bigger hit.
102579, Shiiiiiiit.
Posted by CaptNish, Fri May-01-09 02:09 AM
I dunno. I mean, in theory I agree.... but I still feel like the words STAR and TREK will keep enough people away to give Wolvie the edge.

What I'm tryin' to say is... I can see it making more money, but not enough to drop a Bengie on. lol
102580, Thats an EASY hundo. Good job.
Posted by Ryan M, Fri May-01-09 02:12 AM
102581, I'm considering calling him to raise it to $500.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri May-01-09 02:20 AM
I actually think he'd take it. He is SO sure Wolverine will be a big hit.

I think it'll make bank... but more than Star Trek? Fuck outta here!!
102582, DO IT, Easy $
Posted by spades, Fri May-01-09 09:13 AM
102583, good bet
Posted by thoughtprocess, Fri May-01-09 08:41 AM
I think the mediocrity of X3 and just the over-expanding of the franchise will kill the demand for Wolverine more than anything. that's weird to say when comparing to star trek but trek is starting over again and is already getting much better reviews.
102584, Never underestimate the power of the Trekkie
Posted by Gemini_Two_One, Fri May-01-09 09:09 AM
As popular as Wolverine is he does not have the following of Star Trek. Not to mention I think Star Trek looks like the better movie.

Its overwhelmingly positive reviews work in my favor.

It is possible Wolverine has the bigger opening weekend. But Trek will have the legs.
102586, You're over estimating the power of a Trekkie.
Posted by CaptNish, Fri May-01-09 11:32 AM
Those flicks don't gross that much. THis one will be totally different I'm sure, but...

• "Star Trek: First Contact"-- $146 million.
• "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"--$139 million.
• "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"--$133 million.
• "Star Trek Generations"--$120 million.
• "Star Trek: Insurrection"--$118 million.
• "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"--$97 million.
• "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country"--$96.9 million.
• "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock"--$87 million.
• "Star Trek Nemesis"--$67 million.
• "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"--$63 million.

The first X MEN flick out grossed the two highest grossing Trek flicks combined with $296.3 million. X2? $407.7 mil. Even shitty ass 3? $459.3 mil.

I think the new Trek will still beat Wolvie... but as I said, I ain't puttin' a hundo down on it.
102587, how in the hell did insurrection do 118 million?
Posted by rob, Fri May-01-09 04:46 PM
that was a horrrible movie.
102588, it came out after First Contact.
Posted by The European Miracle, Sun May-03-09 06:53 PM
You see how the quality of Insurrection affected Nemesis, and how Nemesis affected ST movies in general.
102589, You should really do adjusted gross on those numbers
Posted by mrhood75, Fri May-01-09 11:58 PM
Especially the ones done in the '80s, where ticket price were considerably lower. I think maybe one or two Star Trek movies have come out since the first X-Men flick.
102590, I was gonna say...are those adjusted numbers?
Posted by will_5198, Sun May-03-09 08:00 PM
102591, Let me adjust those numbers for inflation and close the gap
Posted by Gemini_Two_One, Sun May-03-09 10:23 PM
http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/records/inflation.php

X-Men: $209,538,399
X2: $255,942,330
X-Men: The Last Stand: $256,904,198

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: $113,446,793
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: $192,037,012
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock: $152,305,290
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home: $204,731,202
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country: $110,678,128
Star Trek: First Contact: $148,984,986
Star Trek: Generations: $132,423,181
Star Trek: Insurrection: $106,080,472

Yes, X-Men still wins, but the first X-Men movie did not sell more tickets than the top two selling Star Trek movies.

as said above, never underestimate the power of Star Trek. The previews have looked great and it is getting much better reviews than Wolverine.

Throw in the fact it is somewhat of a reboot so you don't have to be a hardcore Star Trek fan to know what is going on should bring some people in. I think the positive word of mouth is going to drive this movie much higher than people are anticipating.
102596, how come I never run into people willing to make me $100?

...I get the feeling Star Trek will be much more of a hit than Wolverine. You KNOW how dedicated those Trekkies are plus it looks like it will be the better flick out of the two. Is it me or do those Wolverine previews seem too lighthearted? They should've kept that movie grimy like it was intended to be.

Also, am I the only one who has ever felt that Hugh Jackman should've never been picked to play Wolverine? I've always felt casting should've picked someone who had a grimier feel to play that role.

I almost don't feel like I'm *allowed* to get hype for it though, on account of having virtually nothing to do with the franchise up until now.

But the buzz is strong from both trekkies and non trekkies, so I'm thinking this could be the big hit of the summer

last couple of Star Trek movies didn't fair that well, especially since Shatner isn't in this one. Most Trekkies are very faithful to that original cast and this is some prequel shit that may not go over well with them. Others will see it out of curiosity, me I'll wait till it hits blockbuster.

Shit happens
102630, what? nah, the whole point is the series NEEDS a reboot
Posted by celery77, Sat May-02-09 02:45 PM
it's a great franchise with a loyal legion of fans, but for the past decade or so, Paramount has been woefully underserving them.

Somebody has taken up the franchise mantle and prettied it up.

I haven't even really watched any Star Trek since Deep Space 9, but I, and a bunch of my friends, are going to be at the front of the line on Friday to see this one. I *want* to love outer space adventure stories, but this franchise hasn't given me a reason to be excited about them until I heard about this film. Shit, even Star Wars managed to completely piss off their fanbase. People are DYING to see a good space adventure, it's been a while. Shatner's involvement would hinder more than help this film.

Oh, and, meanwhile comic book fans have been getting the best comic films of their lives recently (X-Men films, Iron Man, Nolan Batman films (although, yes, I personally hated them), even Watchmen, and Sin City, and 300). The bar has been raised, and Wolvy seems to be indicating that the comic film market is a little saturated.
102631, shatner's ego is one of the reasons a reboot is needed
Posted by rob, Sun May-03-09 01:56 AM
his star trek books and generations sucked. the best thing to happen to kirk could be losing the shatner baggage. i think fans of tos might respect that.
102632, that's a great bet. easy money.

Majority of American males over the age of 26 have a "working knowledge" of Star Trek.

We know who Spock is...Kirk, Scotty, Bones, "Baby Sowff Thighs" Uhura...we know.

We seen "Wrath of Khan" growing up...we KNOW. Trek is pretty much an institution.

Prequels already hold a certain lore...a degree of curiosity.

Match that with Trek, and I think we have, as Longo says, a movie with some legs.

Uhura legs.

Will I be there drooling on opening night? No, but I'll be there...just so I can be a "fly on the wall" when Kirk and Spock meet.
102656, Star Trek is going to be huge.

If they're looking for that, they're gonna want Wolverine. But if women are actually enjoying this, plus the good word of mouth from non-Trekkies, it's easily gonna beat Wolverine. I've heard one 'it was pretty good' about Wolverine so far, and everything else has been, 'it's disappointing' to 'it's pretty bad.'

you should have doubled up on him last monday after Wolverine had a big weekend.

102682, I tried. He was shook.

102683, Wolverine did make more money its opening weekend but

Star Trek was the better film by leaps and bounds.

102686, @ 1st I thought jus opening weekend but I now see its lifetime

102687, Easy money... but will it beat Terminator????
Posted by Fijjy, Mon May-11-09 09:47 PM
102688, Yup, I'd take a double or nothing on that.
Posted by spades, Tue May-12-09 12:57 PM
Terminator might open bigger, MIGHT but I think it too will have a steeper drop-off, and less legs than ST
102689, ok wouldve you taken this bet if it was only opening weekend?
Posted by gusto, Mon May-11-09 10:06 PM
102690, No. In fact...
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon May-11-09 11:52 PM
... I was telling him Trek would have the lower opening weekend and STILL gross more. He offered to double or nothing me on that, but I declined. I wasn't sure how much Trek REALLY would pull in.
102691, according to box office mojo Wolv >> ST

But look at the weekend openings: Wolverine earned more than $85 million, while Star Trek only netted $75 million.

102692, Star Trek's 8 day total overtook Wolverine's 8 day total

That bodes well
102693, you're probably too nice a guy to tell your friend he's a fucking moron

i'd just show him this weeks box office estimates and let him try and figure that out for himself.

oh, and if you'd like you can tell him how it did it on less screens.
102694, you may as well collect your money now:

http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/boxoffice/

wolverine is on more screens and only took in 14 million this

star trek is on less screens and took in 43 million this week

the wolverine movie is only ahead 4 million right now, but next week it will DEFINITELY be behind.....
102695, "star trek" is actually the top-grossing film of the year so far.
Posted by come on people, Sat May-30-09 08:35 AM
and about $30M ahead of "wolverine."

i figure it won't last: "harry potter", "transformers", and "ice age 3" will probably out-gross it. but as a trekker, damn, it's AMAZING to see "star trek" do these kind of numbers!
102696, I think by year's end it'll be a Top 3 grosser.

I'm making no promises otherwise, lol. I've already made my hunnid.
