51469, star wars - for people who aren't into sci-fic is sci fic Posted by k_orr, Sun May-01-05 07:15 PM
For people into sci-fic, Star Wars is a western in outer space. The story isn't really about how fictional people deal with science. It's a standard opera about good and evil.
Blade Runner, on the other hand, is a science fiction movie.
Blade Runner is about people dealing with a question that can only come about through the advance of science, specifically with what does it mean to be human when there are Replicants who are as close to human as possible, yet yearn to be human.
In some cases, it's very hard to draw the line between fiction and science fiction, but a movie like Star Wars makes it easy.
As for Contact, it's a sci fic flick, but in terms of how much it deals with something that came through science - I'd say Blade Runner was a better flick.
