The show's supposed to be about the conflict inherent in putting together a television show, period. Sorkin chose a sketch show because the conflict keeps shifting; by which I mean that the characters on the show can be drawn into arguments about where the show is going without being able to hide behind "well, my character would NEVER do that." "What's funny" is more open than "what's my character"; If it was a drama about making a cop show or sitcom, the fights amongst the characters would get old REALLY fast.
