I think there is a difference (Cross attacks ideas, Larry attacks people). It relates to everything else in the article (and our nation) since whenever you attack an American action or legislation, the politicians react and make it sound like you are attacking Americans themselves.

I think Cross had a great opportunity to take the discussion somewhere but he stepped down into Larry's personal attack mode.
