Capitalist reforms saved Cuba's economy after the fall of the Soviet Union. The USSR had been sending 5 billion dollars worth of aid every year to Cuba, and when that suddenly stopped overnight in '91 the GDP in Cuba dropped 35% in 4 years, poverty blossomed. What stopped that free-fall? Market-based (capitalist) reforms by the government such as a law allowing greatly increased foreign investment. In fact, capitalism worked so well that Cuba started heavily taxing all the newsprung businesses in '96. What keeps their country alive today? Tourism (people with money from other countries), and money sent by Cuban Americans. Both foreign sources, and together responsible for funding their health care and baseball parks.

By the way, please answer how capitalism does what you say it does.
