The Akan people are largely found in Ghana comprising about one-half of the population. A diverse number of groups are part of the Akan people including the Bono, Guan, Fate, Denkyira, Twifo, Akwamu, Akuapem, Adanse, Akyem, Nzema, Wassa, Asante, among others. They are the descendants of the ancient empire of Ghana that was located north of the present-day country of Ghana in the area of present day Mali/Mauratania.

The Akan are the originators of the Adinkra symbols that have very significant meanings to the Akan worldview and cosmology. These symbols were traditionally placed on the funerary cloths of the deceased but are now widespread across Ghana to convey traditional proverbs and values.
