it's fiction.

she's a great writer.

have you ever read anything else of hers? the poisonwood bible was her best work. the bean trees is very typical of her pre-poisonwood style.

she grew up in the south and has an amazing understanding of the nature around her. the poisonwood bible takes place in the congo. this book takes place around an isolated farming valley, and it traces the lives of threee women.

one woman is the forest ranger who lives on the mountain overlooking the town. kinda like a jane goodall type. one woman is an organic farmer below who has a big rivalry with an old man who lives next door. and another is a palestinian woman who moved onto a farm with her husband and was recently widowed and trying to figure herself out.

it weaves their lives through a great understanding of nature & interworks their sexuality through the nature around them as well.

was on Oprah's Book Club. I always wondered what that book was about. Oprah had some really good books in that club. It's a shame that she stopped it.

how do you know Taharqa? What items are you bringing this weekend? The workshop attendance is expected to be between 50-60 people...
4757, RE: So Castro
Posted by Castro, Wed May-07-03 08:24 AM
Tiharqa has been a close friend for the last couple of years- our sons play together...

What am I bringing? I participated in a ritual that Tiharqa performed earlier this year, so I have some items from that ritual that I will bring again, but the rest of the items I will gather Friday night. The only other thing I know I will bring is my Berimbau.
4758, i'm not sure y'all
Posted by guerilla_love, Thu May-08-03 02:29 AM
i'm honestly really agonizing over this

i've got a really full weekend ahead of me, and i don't know how i'll keep up as it is

i may not make it

*especially* if the rehearsal dinner for the wedding goes late tomorrow night

4759, RE: i'm not sure y'all
Posted by Castro, Thu May-08-03 02:45 AM
Just come out to the lecture. 10am.

4760, that was my plan
Posted by guerilla_love, Thu May-08-03 02:58 AM
that's the only part that i can make

but i'm right near the end of my first trimester and truly pooped. the idea of another quick morning sick start with no nap possible during the day and a marathon wedding on both sides is really shaking me up.

it would be different if my husband wasn't working all day and i could expect some kind of a break.

it really depends on how things shake out tomorrow night and saturday morning. definitely if we are up and about by 8:30 on saturday we'll come up for it.

4761, where is
Posted by guerilla_love, Thu May-08-03 03:00 AM
pulaski street, anyway?

always good to know just in case
4762, Directions to Lecture (from the South)
Posted by Castro, Fri May-09-03 07:20 AM
Take 95 north- get off at MLK/395 Exit downtown. Take MLK to you get to route 40. Make a left onto Rt 40. Take until you see Pulaski street, which should be the last exit before Rt. 40 becomes a street again. Make a left onto Pulaski street (you will be heading south.) You will pass Bon Secours Hospital. Keep going and you will see space on your left (it is an old factory converted to lofts and workspaces).
4763, ok

i just printed mapquest and chatted with a very pleasent voiced man

the dinner is scheduled to last till 8:30 in va & my husband is eager to help me be able to go

so all signs are pointing toward probably

if for some reason our act is really together, we may swing by the 33rd st mkt beforehand, but i'm not making any promises

so, i'll probably see ya tomorrow!
4764, Cool.

4765, There IS a lot goin' on this week-end...
Posted by ya Setshego, Fri May-09-03 01:01 PM
I'm sitting here debating if I want to go see Soul Live tonight @ 930. If it let out around 1a.m. or so, I would only get 5-6 hours before the lecture tomorrow, which would not be good.

what did he discuss? was it a large turnout?
4773, Were you the one

w. the raspberry Afrikan outfit on, and gold embroidery? I was wondering if you were there or not, but I wasn't sure. I think I saw GL whiz in and out, IF she has short hair, and glasses.

The lecture was like a college class. I can tell that he was a professor. Some of the words he used are not even listed in my dictionary. What does crepuscular mean?
4774, I was the one
Posted by Castro, Sun May-11-03 11:57 PM
with a beard in the back and gold tee shirt on. I did see G/L chasing her kid....
4775, i don't know

what planet y'all's kids come from where they can sit and be quiet like that!
4776, she is a cutie...
Posted by Castro, Mon May-12-03 02:09 AM
you should have just let her play with the other kids- that's what we usually do. My son was at home this go round.
4777, she wasn't as quiet as they were
Posted by guerilla_love, Mon May-12-03 03:07 AM
and there were some people complaining

it was too bad

cuz i didn't catch enough of some
4778, in the ethiopian orthodox church
Posted by guerilla_love, Mon May-12-03 03:30 AM
the children run & play

by the time the service hits 3,4, 5 hours the kids are into all kinds of trouble

gettin into relics

touching priests

yelling, screaming

but this didn't seem like that kind of place to me.

the other kids were sitting quietly in laps! what planet did they come from?!
4779, I can't tell you
Posted by Castro, Mon May-12-03 03:37 AM
because most of the time those same kids (and mine) are tearing up everything in site.
4780, i wish i knew!
Posted by guerilla_love, Mon May-12-03 03:45 AM
cuz i was poooooooooooooped when i got home!
4781, y'know, it's funny
Posted by guerilla_love, Tue May-13-03 01:31 AM
what he was saying about birth year and personality

i've really noticed the water orientedness of my daughter and i since that day

and then the one in the belly is a nature oriented baby- and i can see that because of my strange obsession with trees and crickets lately

my husband's a two. anyone catch what that was? i think he was the earth- grounded & making people comfortable

anyway, that was the part that i really caught the most of in his lecture, and i was dissappointed at the time cuz i don't really tend to go for that kinda thing- seems like there's a sign for everything- but it's been dogging me since he said it
4782, 2 is fire
Posted by ya Setshego, Tue May-13-03 09:55 AM
Those people are keepers of Gateway to the Ancestors.
4783, i caught that a little
Posted by guerilla_love, Wed May-14-03 01:57 AM
can you tell me more?
4784, another thing about the lecture
Posted by guerilla_love, Tue May-13-03 01:32 AM
ananse and i were talking on the healing wisdom post about some's orientation toward westerners

i think he's used to addressing more university type crowds- ya shetsago, you mentioned his vocab-

i think that's why he had such a strong reaction to this crowd
4785, using some's wisdom
Posted by guerilla_love, Tue May-13-03 01:35 AM
there was a really great conversation about applying the wisdom he dropped about the time that i left

anyone wanna fill me in?

it stunk to miss that, but my girl hit the point where all she could do was lie on the ground and yell about being tired and hungry (i had a pile of fruit next to the diaper bag that i forgot- relegated to feeding her veggie chips! what a tragedy!)
4786, That was me.
Posted by ya Setshego, Tue May-13-03 09:47 AM
I was sitting in the front, to his left. He kept asking me what he said in Of Water and Spirit, and Healing Wisdom of Africa, because I had copies of them sitting on the chair next to me, and the questions I posed to him were directly out of those books.
4787, ok!
Posted by guerilla_love, Wed May-14-03 01:55 AM
i remember you completely then-

when he couldn't remember what he'd written-

he has a great sense of humor/humility, eh?

did i write that? oh, that's good!
4788, the lecture in general
Posted by guerilla_love, Tue May-13-03 01:39 AM
one thing i noticed about some is that there are a few different levels he communicates on

the first chapter of the healing wisdom of africa really blew me away, and on some level i felt like i needed him to return to that level and complete what he started in my head

the lecture seemed to me to be on the level of the rest of the book

when i left, the elder at the door asked me "did you get what you came for?" i've been really turning over that question in my head

at the time i thought i hadn't because i was busy chasing the little one around

but things that he said have been really coming to me over the week and changing my mind about what i saw and heard

4789, the fire ritual
Posted by guerilla_love, Tue May-13-03 01:43 AM
someone asked a question about the fire ritual

he had said that the ritual should not be appropriated by westerners

on saturday, he let up and said it's good for some westerners

do y'all think he should have let up on that front?

i didn't because what i understand about his discussion of ritual is that you need to find things in your own life and context that achieve the goals of the ritual

i don't see how adopting another cultures ritual could ever be helpful, but i think it could be mistakenly used as a tool for unity in the diaspora
4790, I don't remember
Posted by ya Setshego, Tue May-13-03 09:53 AM
him recanting his views on fire ritual at all. In fact, that was the point at which he asked me what he wrote in healing wisdom. I told him, and then he said to the lady who asked the question, "Well, there you have it then. You see, I can't even remember what I wrote in my own book!" The audience started laughing, but the lady shot me a dirty look as if to say, "I was asking HIM, not YOU!"

Can you tell that I'm a mineral person?....
4791, what was mineral again?
Posted by guerilla_love, Wed May-14-03 01:56 AM
think of it like i was on a cellphone that lost and regained its connection periodically....

(a great big 30 lb cellphone)
4792, RE: what was mineral again?
Posted by ya Setshego, Wed May-14-03 02:31 AM
4 & 9. Mineral people are 4 & 9. There was a guy in my group who was born in 1949, so he is like, mineral two times over. Mineral people keep and preserve the history. They are the griots, and the historians. They help people remember their history, and divine purpose in Life.
