The saddest part of course is the poverty... i negotiated a sale of a African Mask using "Cidi's(sp?)" is what they call it here the currency with a brother as he ran along side my cab. I gave him my watch as a thank you note... he was so happy, i was so heartbroken.
Then... you also have very wealthy people... money destroys you... that is so clear to me now. Also the only other time i have seen anything disrespectful is when they try to make American Soap Operas... they are the worst as you could imagine (so are their music vids... whew...) but still.. Ok so, I used to date this guy from Ghana, he wouldn't tell me much about his country, i'm not sure why...I picked up on the fact that he spoke Twi... And about his disdain for lack of fresh vegetables here in the US, but I always wondered if there is an Islamic majority there? And are there there a lot of Animists or is there a good mix of most religions? What are the schools like? Isn't Accra the capital? Is there a large poor population or does it depend on the region? I know some of these are perhaps stupid questions and perhaps I should read up, but since knowing this person from Ghana (and no longer communicating with him) I've always wondered some things, and I guess this is the prefect forum. I mean I know a guy from Niger who told me his village is mostly Muslim but his ideas are mostly Animist, it's weird, maybe it's just him...I'm gonna go home and read my Encyclopedia of Africa. but I've seen plenty of Mosques as well. Christians and Muslims appear to live side by side pretty peacefully. From what I've read/heard, traditional beliefs are mixed in with newer customs quite seamlessly, but that's usually the case anywhere.

The Christian people in Ghana are very outspoken about their faith by the way, which is mostly displayed by the names they give their stores and businesses. "Blood of Jesus Hair Salon", "Why Can't I Thank My Jesus Spare Parts", that kind of stuff. Pretty hilarious sometimes, but their passion really is beautiful.

it's mostly christian from what i can see... which is kinda sad to me really... but i have met some muslims, some athieists... i would imagine it's all about your circle and where you run just like anywhere else... but also, in tragedy (not necessarily Ghana, but i'm thinking of the Liberian Refugees, the Togo Refugees, and the Chadian refugees here) one reason why christianity is so pronounced is cause a lot of the food aid given in tragic situations were from christian programs... same with the free education, clothing and refugee camps... i suspect they saw the opportunity... meaning the christians.

Any muslims in Accra will have their roots in the Northern, Upper-East, or Upper-West regions that used to be in the colony of French West Africa (although traditional religion is still very common, especially away from the main roads in the North). In the southern 2 thirds of Ghana outside of the capital you won't see many mosques at all. Catholicism is more widespread on the coast (Porteguese and French missionaries 18thC - 1880s 'chess-board'colonisation period respectively). Protestantism, Evangelical and presbyterian churches are the most common in general. The Mormons are the fastest growing in the region however. Despite the fact that black people were only granted entry to this church in the early 80s, one of their missionaries in Accra told me that out of their 200 representatives in West Africa, 197 were Nigerian or Ghanaian (!?!).

Africans can't just leave Africa... that's right folks... they cannot just buy a plane ticket and leave... they have to get an invite from someone in the country of destination... along with a sponsorship... along with proof that this person will provide them a place to stay, and a job... aint that some shit? So in other words... if I meet a brother from Africa... we become cool... I would have to send him an official letter (certified and notarized) as an invite... he has to then apply for his visa through the Embassey (who normally rejects all but eight applicants on any given day... that's right... and you still have to pay whether your accepted or not...) and the other applications either sit in the corner (saw with my own two eyes) or are never responded to. This way the applicant has to apply again... and pay again... but will nine times out of ten get denied. Ironically, white folks, the one sure fire way is if a church sponsors a brother or a sister then they can come. Aint that some shit. Europeans can just hop on a plane and come... Africans have to fight, literally fight, just to be able to come whether they can afford the plane ticket or not. Aint that some bullshit???
The US uses them because basically they know the economy here is mad weak... and the people work for nothing... a high paying job... $150 US dollars a month... that's right you have hit the big time... foul.

It's a fairly big city... it's not quite like say even Detroit or Chicago... no... but in terms of size it's a nice city. No skyscrapers... and while there is obviously a lot of businesses here... there is also something here that is equally striking... self employement of the little man... from cats walking the streets selling wood carvings to fruit... to small Calling card stands... to calling card booths, to stores...

Mixed... you can see a compound with a security guard, gate, guest home, pool.. right next to a Junkyard. Now on the outskirts of Accra, I did end up going to area where everyone seemed a little more well to do. That seemed a little more systematic in approach... but in Accra... yeah you can see what appears to be shanty towns (not quite as bad...the roads are clean as is the city in general) a Club! or a restaurant! But isn't that the case in Brooklyn also? Baltimore too?

Not really sure. In terms of immigration there are a lot of refugees from the current crisis in Togo and Chad. I have noticed that.

Of course.

How fast-paced is life there?

I would imagine it's as fast as you make it... just like anywhere else really... there is a overall laid back approach to life in Africa... it's just the way it is... however, it depends on the person.

Do you see North Americans teaching English in schools or any such thing? Are the volunteers mostly white Americans or Blacks? Without making generalizations regarding their motivation, what do you think of white volunteers in African nations? Can they do any good? Assuming they're not motivated by guilt, imperialist desire, or capitalist greed, are they a good example to white folk?

I have seen quite a few whites here... as far as their motivation I cannot generalize...
however I would imagine you have all of the above...
the comfortable background white upperclass cat with the guilties who really wants to help...
and the person who comes simply cause they don't have to pay taxes and can live free and stack up their dough in the same position? Non-profit or church based pay no taxes if american citizens...
or they could suffer from the Tarzan complex...

have often involved Africa, a raising questions of their abilities to help. I hear the question being asked a lot, by people I trust want to help others and help themselves. People who've never seen the third world but crave exposure because of their sheltered North American communities. I hear a lot of desire to be on the front of aid, but at the same time a frustration: They know that Africa needs change, but they don't know if that means direct help. The last thing Africa needs are westerners coming to build their civil societies, "teaching" them. But at the same time, they want to go as more than tourists, turning African states into western tourist havens like Bankok, full of debauchery and destitution. You mention that there are some straight up good folks, but what are they doing? I suspect that good folk don't need to do much, simply go with a positive, cooperative attitude that doesn't judge the residents or their ways, but is there any greater framework that this can be done through?

What are the opportunities like over there for someone in the entertainment field. I'd like to open up recording business over there (Ghana). But i'm hesistant about being viewed as an outsider (paying more for goods because the locals assume I don't know the difference between there $ and US $)

I just have this thing about traveling solo, especially in foreign lands. I'd prefer to go with someone familiar with or native to said country.
