Posted by Olive_tree, Fri May-20-05 03:05 PM
i guess you are in an urban area... do u plan to go to a rural/agriculture area?
what are the people wearing?
do you know the language?
32848, RE: environment: describe it
Posted by AquamansWrath, Fri May-20-05 03:16 PM
It's Anglophone... meaning the people speak English...
there are way too many dialects to learn... depends on what tribe you are from, what village etc...
i have been all over Accra
the people are wearing clothes... hahaha... i mean it depends... some areas are very poor and you still see people wearing DKNY... sound familiar?
some are rastas... some are not... some wear American clothing... actually mostly everyone does. Last night I want to four clubs...

Tantra
Afrodisiac
Makumba
and Joker's... Joker's was crazy wack.
It is a urban setting but obviously the impact of poverty and wealth co-exist... which is odd to see... but not quite unlike Brooklyn where you can have a dope ass neighborhood here... and two blocks away are the projects. It just depends.
People have been asking me some dumb ass questions when they call me
'do you have water... will the UN helicopter come and get you... are the people wearing shoes... have they ever heard hiphop before'
I'm like wow... had no idea my own comrades could be so stupid.
32849, many don't know about african countries
Posted by Olive_tree, Fri May-20-05 03:40 PM
it's ignorance... we aren't taught it and few seek the education on their own ... you are in a teachable moment it's great.

are people open? reserved?
tell me about the gender lines? how are women treated and viewed?
32850, great question.... here's why...
Posted by AquamansWrath, Fri May-20-05 03:56 PM
what i have noticed is a high level of respect for women...
the TV commercials... all family based... with the father there...
the rap songs (I'm here producing Ghana's top artist) is all about resepect, unity, and love for the black woman and family. It's so amazing to see... I feel as if this is how we would have been if we wouldn't have been 'tampered' with by Europeans. On the real.
Excellent story... i'm with a comrade and his colleague... he says to me 'Aqua, (not giving my real name)... I'm so tired... how do you do this (we were recording)' so his colleague says "Go home lookie... to your wife, her great cooking, and your children... they will take care of you there and make sure you get the rest you need".
I damn near cried... on the real... it was so beautiful to hear a black man tell another black man to go home to his wife and kids.
Very, very, very, very moving... of course it was common to them.
The only infection i have seen on the real here is HIPHOP... it's killing us... that is the only time on TV i have seen anything disrespectful to the women and the family... and that's real.

well here's one bigger...
think of what the corporate world/hiphop combined is doing to destroy the rest of the world.. honestly the only time i saw some seriously ignorant rhetoric or just the same ol bullshit is when black artists from America were performing in their videos...
even the videos of artists from say South Africa were uniquely on point... more 'hiphop' than American artists that's for sure.

I was in Ghana last year and during Christmas the year before!

You right Jokers is wack. Thats the one beach front (Labadi) with mad prostitutes I believe.

I understand there is a new spot around Airport Residential called Warehouse thats hot!

Best club in Accra is Temptations in the Osu area but I believe thats only open for Christmas when all the London boys come to town.

In-fact, there's large number of Ghanaians born outside of the country that holiday in Ghana for christmas.

Anyhow, I hope you have a good time. Try and make it down to the Castles in cape coast. Its definitely worth the visit.

Are you going to the MTV event ? Have you seen/heard Skwatta Kamp and other groups performing in it ?

How are the Ewe and Ashanti chicks ? 'Learnt anything fun by the way of native dialects ?

Did you visit any of the slave outposts ? Your feelings ?

Overall impression: Is the trip what you thought it would be ? Better ? Disappointing ?
32872, RE: Radio ? Shows ? Women ? Urban spiel ? Slave castles ?
Posted by AquamansWrath, Fri May-20-05 04:01 PM
the most amazinng trip ever... certainly not my last...
the women (not chicks) are beautiful...
there are far too many tribes and dialects to thumb...
the people are completely open and have shown me massive love...
in fact, we were hopping out of a car that we were driving into the local market to buy some 'artifacts' as they refer to them... you know, masks, beads... etc... and someone stobbed me as i walked into the currency exchange and said 'brother... your door isn't locked... that car is nice... you should lock your door... although no one will take anything.. .it is best'
i was like WOW... I am a long fucking way from Baltimore. Word.
The saddest part of course is the poverty... i negotiated a sale of a African Mask using "Cidi's(sp?)" is what they call it here the currency with a brother as he ran along side my cab. I gave him my watch as a thank you note... he was so happy, i was so heartbroken.
Then... you also have very wealthy people... money destroys you... that is so clear to me now. Also the only other time i have seen anything disrespectful is when they try to make American Soap Operas... they are the worst as you could imagine (so are their music vids... whew...) but still.. Western influence is the worst man... for real... but that's most of what they listen to when you hit the clubs here... that and some local musicians.
32873, i remember that shit like yesterday...poverty was off the chain.

it was ill... the vibrations are ill here in general... it's amazing... everyone here is walking up to me calling me 'brother'...

Ok so, I used to date this guy from Ghana, he wouldn't tell me much about his country, i'm not sure why...I picked up on the fact that he spoke Twi... And about his disdain for lack of fresh vegetables here in the US, but I always wondered if there is an Islamic majority there? And are there there a lot of Animists or is there a good mix of most religions? What are the schools like? Isn't Accra the capital? Is there a large poor population or does it depend on the region? I know some of these are perhaps stupid questions and perhaps I should read up, but since knowing this person from Ghana (and no longer communicating with him) I've always wondered some things, and I guess this is the prefect forum. I mean I know a guy from Niger who told me his village is mostly Muslim but his ideas are mostly Animist, it's weird, maybe it's just him...I'm gonna go home and read my Encyclopedia of Africa. Thanks for the forum, good rhetoric....

32890, Ghana is mostly Christian,
Posted by Warp and Woof, Mon May-23-05 05:44 AM
but I've seen plenty of Mosques as well. Christians and Muslims appear to live side by side pretty peacefully. From what I've read/heard, traditional beliefs are mixed in with newer customs quite seamlessly, but that's usually the case anywhere.

The Christian people in Ghana are very outspoken about their faith by the way, which is mostly displayed by the names they give their stores and businesses. "Blood of Jesus Hair Salon", "Why Can't I Thank My Jesus Spare Parts", that kind of stuff. Pretty hilarious sometimes, but their passion really is beautiful.
32891, RE: Ghana is mostly Christian,
Posted by AquamansWrath, Mon May-23-05 09:58 AM
i don't know if it's beautiful...
but their spirituality certainly is strong... very true...
i even saw Jesus Christ calling cards... but i chalk that up to not knowing what time it really is, cause these same cats got a white jesus in their window... so... it's not beautiful to me.. just another shackle we need to break.

Posted by AquamansWrath, Mon May-23-05 09:57 AM
hahaha... okay... i'll try to answer... and for the record you should really get in touch with your boy, sounds like you miss him...
it's mostly christian from what i can see... which is kinda sad to me really... but i have met some muslims, some athieists... i would imagine it's all about your circle and where you run just like anywhere else... but also, in tragedy (not necessarily Ghana, but i'm thinking of the Liberian Refugees, the Togo Refugees, and the Chadian refugees here) one reason why christianity is so pronounced is cause a lot of the food aid given in tragic situations were from christian programs... same with the free education, clothing and refugee camps... i suspect they saw the opportunity... meaning the christians.
32893, Ghanaian religion.
Posted by Sultan S, Mon May-23-05 10:31 AM
Any muslims in Accra will have their roots in the Northern, Upper-East, or Upper-West regions that used to be in the colony of French West Africa (although traditional religion is still very common, especially away from the main roads in the North). In the southern 2 thirds of Ghana outside of the capital you won't see many mosques at all. Catholicism is more widespread on the coast (Porteguese and French missionaries 18thC - 1880s 'chess-board'colonisation period respectively). Protestantism, Evangelical and presbyterian churches are the most common in general. The Mormons are the fastest growing in the region however. Despite the fact that black people were only granted entry to this church in the early 80s, one of their missionaries in Accra told me that out of their 200 representatives in West Africa, 197 were Nigerian or Ghanaian (!?!).

There is a massive inferiority complex in most West African countries I have been to when it comes to light/white people.
32906, RE: I heard it all my life
Posted by AquamansWrath, Thu May-26-05 08:35 AM
you shouldn't lump light and white people in the same boat...
I agree with you... but
Malcolm X was lightskinned
Master Farhd Mohammed
Bob Marley was lightskinned... and so on to name a few... it's not a accurate assesmement...
however, yes in W. Africa they certainly have a inferiority complex in places like Ghana... I wouldn't say the same for Senegal... more roots and cultural as oppossed to Ghana being more Westernized... well to some degree anyway...
32907, Maybe he should differentiate

He is if he doesn't differentiate...
lightskinned people are not responsible for the economic turmoil, the racial turmoil, or the detachment of the people... not at all... those responsible should be outlined constantly... as far as lightskinned people are concerned I understand it's an issue... but it's not a fair playing field to note that in the same column... it exudes the wrong message and is a different set of complexities instigated by the same original source... I understand what Sun is saying... but still... it embodies too much of black on black hate not to be clarified... I know Sun knows better... but for those who dont know...

32912, is this a good starting point for repatriation?
Posted by urthanheaven, Sun May-22-05 07:08 PM
a good base of operations? more and more i am starting to think so. i believe that black people in america, all america's, should look towards setting up a strong base of operations in africa. marcus garvey's movement was the most successfull in numbers and the most promising for affecting real change in the african condition. solidarity.

yuck. thinking of that, what if we are psychically diseased? what if the poisons we've picked up whilst struggling to survive in this land have left us tainted like a radioactive mutant toad? what if in returning we poison the land with our 'western' me culture?

in saying that, it seems that is happening anyway, the way you have mentioned the clubs and 'hip hop' culture as being detrimental to the mindstate of native africans in the same way it's being used to subjugate us on this side. the difference is you have a buffer of african culture and a solid connection to the land that isn't so easilly eroded by a foul media wind.

the clincher would be numbers. is afro american (yuck) culture worth holding on to? will we be able to become something new? and what will it cost the environment?

liberia.

i think what happened in liberia was compounded by foreign financial interest. disputes which should have been settled by diplomacy and actual understanding were blown out of proportion by the third party of foreign cash and influence. if we could minimise that kind of situation we could come up with a better outcome than the usual petty bourgeois corrupt political dictator despot civil war destabilization free market siphoning of resources from the local ecology and economy situation. i vote we remain mindfull and vigilant to such an incursion. the kind that historically and currently exists throughout the african diaspora.

nigeria.

would you suggest ghanna over nigeria as a base of operations for repatriating africans from america?

egypt/ethiopia/kenya.

whilst there is a lot of history here, it is mainly that the accomplishments and influence of this region on europe that makes it an issue to africans in latin (north and south america/europe) speaking countries, even though the bulk of us come from west africa! i do not denigrate the achievements of the ethiopian army after world war two in the african liberation movement, however i think that gaining a greater knowledge of the history and achievement of west africans and central africans outside of areas of contact with europeans is paramount. we need to thoroughly dispel any and all myths around african cultural inferiority. so when we get there we don't think ourselves more 'civilized' or worthy of making decisions than our brothers and sisters on the continent...

starting to slip into my rhetoric, sorry. please have a good time and post pictures!

how do you think we can address the 'hip hop' invasion and it's culturally subversive doctrine?

do you think that the weight of local hip hop/music, the fact that it still has it's african soul intact will be enough to turn the tide? do you think that we could create/expand an african music industry that remains intact and in african hands, so it can't be subverted by external interests to the tune of the american music industry? how do you think we can achieve that aim?

i am planning a trip back to africa. i can only really afford it as part of a musical tour or some sort of documentary project.

have you heard of daara j? that's what i mean by africans positively influencing the industry and the artists over here. zapp mama etc.

thanks for the club list!

i have so many questions. most can only be answered when i get there myself. in the meanwhile to satisfy my souls desire to go forward to africa, for the unification of black people around the world, for an end to tribal war, and for something solid to come out of our 400 years of suffering, i will keep researching. it inspires me every time i hear of someone going forward home. thanks.

ok!

I personally wouldn't suggest any country over another...
Ghana primarily cause it's Anglophone...
Nigeria can be tricky, so if your running through say Lagos... make sure you got a strong team who knows the ares... corruption runs rampant...
Nairobi is beautiful... so no worries there...
you know? It just depends really... on the person... their perspective... their game (yup... i said it)... their heart... all these things combined... hell there are some blacks who still say Jamaicans aren't black so... foolishness is just foolishness...

get a plot of land (apprx $5000 in a half decent area) and you can have a 3 bed house built for $35000 - $50000.

no forgetting here!

Just as examples click below. Remember this a prebuilt house. If you buy the plot and build the house with your own contractors you can save a lot more or use the extra money to invest in better finishing.

32922, How the US uses them... HERE"S THE ILL SHIT...
Posted by AquamansWrath, Thu May-26-05 11:47 AM
yeah... but something to remember... Africans can't just leave Africa... that's right folks... they cannot just buy a plane ticket and leave... they have to get an invite from someone in the country of destination... along with a sponsorship... along with proof that this person will provide them a place to stay, and a job... aint that some shit? So in other words... if I meet a brother from Africa... we become cool... I would have to send him an official letter (certified and notarized) as an invite... he has to then apply for his visa through the Embassey (who normally rejects all but eight applicants on any given day... that's right... and you still have to pay whether your accepted or not...) and the other applications either sit in the corner (saw with my own two eyes) or are never responded to. This way the applicant has to apply again... and pay again... but will nine times out of ten get denied. Ironically, white folks, the one sure fire way is if a church sponsors a brother or a sister then they can come. Aint that some shit. Europeans can just hop on a plane and come... Africans have to fight, literally fight, just to be able to come whether they can afford the plane ticket or not. Aint that some bullshit???
The US uses them because basically they know the economy here is mad weak... and the people work for nothing... a high paying job... $150 US dollars a month... that's right you have hit the big time... foul.
So this is why they make it difficult for them to leave... cause they need them here to exploit through labor... so foreign companies who would normally have to pay a US citizen $30,000.00 say as average pay, plus benefits only has to pay them here say $100-150 a month with no benefits! This is how the US uses them... and this is speaking from a non-resource location... think Sierra Leone and the Jews who own the diamond mines there... think Nigeria and the oil.
Foul... crazy foul.

PM? Nah...
Nonprofits... yeah please forgive... but you know you might not be interested cause when I asked around they all said they were 'Christian based'... no lie. I was like 'word?' that's it?
The reason? In order for most africans to even get out of their country they have to have a sponsor... often times it's just churches.

How big of a city is it? What's the infastructure like in terms of roads & sewers? Is development planned out or does it happen haphazard?

Are communities mixed in terms of wealth or are there neight based on income?

Is there much growth in terms of population? Immigration from the countryside?

Are there many slums in the city?

How fast-paced is life there?

Great questions...

How big of a city is it? What's the infastructure like in terms of roads & sewers?

It's a fairly big city... it's not quite like say even Detroit or Chicago... no... but in terms of size it's a nice city. No skyscrapers... and while there is obviously a lot of businesses here... there is also something here that is equally striking... self employement of the little man... from cats walking the streets selling wood carvings to fruit... to small Calling card stands... to calling card booths, to stores...

Is development planned out or does it happen haphazard?

I would imagine it's planned out just like anywhere else.

Are communities mixed in terms of wealth or are there neight based on income?

Mixed... you can see a compound with a security guard, gate, guest home, pool.. right next to a Junkyard. Now on the outskirts of Accra, I did end up going to area where everyone seemed a little more well to do. That seemed a little more systematic in approach... but in Accra... yeah you can see what appears to be shanty towns (not quite as bad...the roads are clean as is the city in general) a Club! or a restaurant! But isn't that the case in Brooklyn also? Baltimore too?

Is there much growth in terms of population? Immigration from the countryside?

Not really sure. In terms of immigration there are a lot of refugees from the current crisis in Togo and Chad. I have noticed that.

Are there many slums in the city?

Of course.

How fast-paced is life there?

I would imagine it's as fast as you make it... just like anywhere else really... there is a overall laid back approach to life in Africa... it's just the way it is... however, it depends on the person.
32941, Absolutely.

32947, Volunteers? White Volunteers?
Posted by ZachG, Wed Jun-08-05 11:15 AM
Do you see North Americans teaching English in schools or any such thing? Are the volunteers mostly white Americans or Blacks? Without making generalizations regarding their motivation, what do you think of white volunteers in African nations? Can they do any good? Assuming they're not motivated by guilt, imperialist desire, or capitalist greed, are they a good example to white folk?
32948, Great question...
Posted by AquamansWrath, Fri Jun-10-05 12:21 PM
I have seen quite a few whites here... as far as their motivation I cannot generalize...
however I would imagine you have all of the above...
the comfortable background white upperclass cat with the guilties who really wants to help...
and the person who comes simply cause they don't have to pay taxes and can live free and stack up their dough in the same position? Non-profit or church based pay no taxes if american citizens...
or they could suffer from the Tarzan complex...
or the Christian complex of we must save them...
or they could just be a decent cat who's up on the real...
it depends.
32949, Recent discussions I've had with whites
Posted by ZachG, Sat Jun-11-05 02:38 PM
have often involved Africa, a raising questions of their abilities to help. I hear the question being asked a lot, by people I trust want to help others and help themselves. People who've never seen the third world but crave exposure because of their sheltered North American communities. I hear a lot of desire to be on the front of aid, but at the same time a frustration: They know that Africa needs change, but they don't know if that means direct help. The last thing Africa needs are westerners coming to build their civil societies, "teaching" them. But at the same time, they want to go as more than tourists, turning African states into western tourist havens like Bankok, full of debauchery and destitution. You mention that there are some straight up good folks, but what are they doing? I suspect that good folk don't need to do much, simply go with a positive, cooperative attitude that doesn't judge the residents or their ways, but is there any greater framework that this can be done through?
32950, Recording Industry ?
Posted by GdChil1, Fri Jun-10-05 08:09 AM
What are the opportunities like over there for someone in the entertainment field. I'd like to open up recording business over there (Ghana). But i'm hesistant about being viewed as an outsider (paying more for goods because the locals assume I don't know the difference between there $ and US $)

For example, I have a Ghanian friend who had a house built for $20K, nice sized 3 bedroom house with a pool and all. I inquired about having the same style/size house built and was quoted a price nearly double that...why?
32951, um... not sure but...
Posted by AquamansWrath, Fri Jun-10-05 12:17 PM
I think no matter where you go in this world you have surround yourself with decent people... the same thing can happen here at a car dealership or just wherever... not sure...
when you say recording business... what specifically are you talking about? Also... you should simply come to Ghana to figure it out... get to know the people... familiarize yourself with the way things are... you know? You don't want to consider an investment through another set of eyes... you dig?
