Afro-Cuban Orisha Dance focuses on dances of the Orisha, entities that represent forces of nature and aspects of the human character. Orisha, and the dances, songs, music and traditions associated with them, were carried by the Yoruba people of West Africa to Cuba during the slave trade. In Cuba, the traditions evolved in response to the ethnic, cultural and linguistic mix of peoples there. This class explores the Orisha, such as Elegua, Oshun and Yemaya, through movement, _expression, song and live drumming led by David Font.

Afro-Caribbean Movement is an exploration into dances of the African Diaspora including West African, Afro-Cuban, and Haitian. Each class emphasizes isolation and technique and ends with choreography that builds on each dancer’s strengths and accommodates varying levels of dance experience. Afro-Caribbean Movement is upbeat and athletic, challenging the dancer physically and mentally.

Class Attire: Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for dance and be prepared to dance barefoot. Women are encouraged to bring large flowing Caribbean type skirts, which are used in the interpretation of the dance.

Instructor bio: Charisse has over ten years experience studying, performing and teaching African Diaspora dance forms including West African, Caribbean and Capoeira Angola. She most recently performed Afro-Cuban dance with Ashe Moyubba Folkloric Ensemble. Charisse is the founder of the Diaspora Dance Theater Project.
